At age 15, Zha Yicheng has taken the speed climbing cmmunity by strm fllwing his tw stunning climbs f 4.68 and 4.65 secnds — unfficially faster than US athlete Sam Watsn’s 4.74-secnd wrld recrd set at last year’s Paris Olympics.
Zha’s recrd-breaking mment happened during a trial event fr China’s natinal team n March 26. Since the event was nt apprved by the Internatinal Federatin f Sprt Climbing (IFSC), his achievement was nt fficially recgnized. Nevertheless, evidently Zha has emerged as ne f China’s mst prmising speed climbers.
Brn in 2009 in Suzhu, Zha’s jurney with speed climbing began at age 5, when a friend dragged him t a climbing gym. What started as a weekly hbby sn ccupied his weekends. By 9, he had already wn medals at multiple yuth events. After winning the 2023 IFSC Yuth Wrld Champinships in Seul, Suth Krea, Zha had t chse between schl and sprts. At that time, he was a tp middle schl student, but he chse t dedicate fur t eight years t speed climbing t see hw far he culd g.
In September 2023, Zha jined the Shanghai speed climbing team. During the 2023-24 winter camp, his times imprved frm 5.4 secnds t 4.99, reaching the “sub-five” milestne. He kept that strng mmentum in the 2024 seasn, clcking 4.93 secnds t win the natinal speed climbing champinships in September.
Zha credits his quick prgress t scientific training and active thinking. After his first winter training camp with the natinal team, he emerged transfrmed. “The team’s envirnment pushed me t train smarter. The natin’s best climbers are here, and every sessin demands yur abslute best,” said Zha. Between training sessins, Zha reads histry bks, sci-fi stries, and a bigraphy f basketball legend Kbe Bryant. When he can’t sleep, he watches climbing vides t study thers’ mvements. “Climbing isn’t just physical. It’s a mental game. Withut active thinking, yu can’t reach the tp level in any sprt,” Zha said.
Fr nw, age rules stp Zha frm cmpeting in internatinal events, but he sees the delay as an pprtunity t imprve his perfrmance. “Next year, I’ll cmpete internatinally in peak frm t strive fr hnr fr my cuntry,” he tld Xinhua.
24. Why were Zha Yicheng’s recrd-breaking climbs nt fficially recgnized?
A. Because the event was nt admitted by the IFSC.
B. Because he was t yung t qualify fr wrld recrds.
C. Because his times were slwer than Sam Watsn’s recrd.
D. Because he cmpeted in a natinal champinship instead.
25. What can be inferred abut Zha’s decisin t fcus n speed climbing ver schl?

As the planet warms up and ceans rise, extreme weather events are becming the nrm. Getting ntified in time t prepare fr a disastrus hurricane r heat wave culd be the disparity between life and death. Nw AI can help. Tw studies published in the jurnal Nature described the benefit f tw AI mdels that culd imprve weather frecasting.
The first AI-based system, develped by the Huawei Clud team, is knwn as Pangu-Weather. It was capable f predicting glbal weather a week in advance. Befre it came ut, mst cuntries relied n mathematical weather predictin mdels, which use math frmulas t create cmputer mdels f the atmsphere and ceans fr predicting future weather. What makes Pangu-Weather different is that the Pangu-Weather mdel is deeply trained with the help f 39-year glbal weather data, preparing it t frecast temperature, pressure, and wind speed. When cmpared t the mathematical weather predictin methd, Pangu-Weather was 10,000 times faster and n less accurate. Pangu-Weather als cntains a 3D mdel, unlike past AI frecasting systems, that allws it t recrd atmspheric states at different pressure levels t further increase its accuracy.
Pangu-Weather can predict weather patterns 5 — 7 days in advance. Hwever, it can’t frecast precipitatin (降水). As precipitatin predictin is vital fr extreme weather frecasting, a secnd Nature mdel, NwcastNet, fills this gap. It can accurately predict rainfall 6 hurs ahead, helping meterlgists (气象学家) study weather patterns in real-time mre effectively.
NwcastNet fcuses n detailed, realistic descriptins f extreme rainfall patterns. It uses radar bservatins frm the US and China, as well as deep learning methds, t predict precipitatin rates ver a 1.6-millin-square-mile regin f the eastern and central US up t 3 hurs in advance. 62 meterlgists frm China tested NwcastNet and ranked it first, ut f fur ther leading weather frecasting methds, in reliably predicting heavy rain, which it did 71 percent f the time.
While generative AI mdels have gd prspects in weather frecasting, experts pint ut that replacing existing systems has many challenges. Hwever, in 5 — 10 years, these mdels may surprise us.
28. What des the underlined wrd “disparity” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Difference.B. Relatinship.C. Balance.D. Cmparisn.
29. Which f the fllwing best describes Pangu-Weather?
A. Data-driven.B. Multi-functinal.C. Thery-based.D. Human-perated.
30. What is an advantage f NwcastNet?
A. It reduces radar errrs n a large scale.
B. It utperfrms any ther weather mdel.
C. It predicts dwnpurs with high accuracy.
D. It cvers diverse regins arund the glbe.
31. What is the text mainly abut?
A. The impacts f climate change n extreme weather events.
B. The intrductin t high-tech weather-frecasting mdels.
C. The challenges in using generative AI in weather frecasting.
D. The explanatin f new measures t prtect the envirnment.

Sme girls tend t feel frustrated if they have a pear-shaped bdy, with hips that are wider than the bust (胸部) and shulders. While pear-shaped peple’s waists are typically smaller, they may have mre fat n their hips and legs. As a result, many pear-shaped girls try t hide their hips and legs under large dresses and pants.
Hwever, a recent study suggested that pear-shaped peple are the nes wh wn the genetic lttery!
A study published in September by the US Natinal Library f Medicine fund that the waist-t-hip rati (WHR) shws the strngest and mst cnsistent assciatin with mrtality. Traditinally, the bdy mass index (BMI) has been cnsidered the best indicatr f health. Hwever, this study challenges this belief. It surveyed nearly 40,000 peple and fund that, regardless f BMI, WHR is psitively crrelated with all-cause mrtality (all f the deaths that ccur in a ppulatin n matter the cause). The larger the WHR, the higher the all-cause mrtality rate will be. Instead f fcusing n hw much fat a persn has, scientists invlved in this study suggest peple shuld fcus mre n hw fat is distributed in a persn’s bdy.
WHR, as its name suggests, cmpares yur waist measurement t yur hip measurement. A larger waistline means mre central fat, which culd indicate mre visceral fat (内脏脂肪), als knwn as txic fat. Harvard Medical Schl states that mre visceral fat increases the risk f illnesses including diabetes, heart diseases and asthma. That’s why peple with a pear-shaped bdy tend t be healthier than thers. Accrding t the Wrld Health Organizatin (WHO), a healthy WHR is less than 0.85 fr wmen and less than 0.9 fr men.
It is impssible t specifically target waist fat when peple try t lse weight. But lsing verall fat will make the waist smaller. Researchers frm Jhns Hpkins University suggested we eat less carbhydrates and mre fd higher in fiber and prtein. Mrever, ding strength training helps build mre muscle, which makes yu burn mre calries even when yu’re resting.
32. Why d pear-shaped girls prefer baggy trusers?
A. T shw ff their lng legs.
B. T hide their brad shulders.
C. T shwcase their slim waists.
D. T cver their wide hips and thick legs.
33. What des the recent study find that ges against the cnventinal belief?
A. Pear-shaped peple are much healthier.
B. WHR cnsistently crrelates with death rate.
C. Pear-shaped peple are lucky t win ltteries.
D. A smaller BMI indicates healthier physical cnditin.
34. What des the authr intend t d in Paragraph 4?
A. T annunce the standard WHR set by Wrld Health Organizatin.
B. T explain why pear-shaped bdy are likely t be healthier than thers.
C. T intrduce what WHR refers t and hw t measure ur waistlines.
D. T reveal the huge risks f varius illnesses visceral fat can bring abut.
35. What’s the text mainly abut?
A. A practical tip fr lsing waist fat.
B. A healthy WHR recmmended by WHO.
C. A surprise bnus wn by pear-shaped bdies.
D. A typical bdy shape bringing gd t health.
