My name is Erica. Last year, anxiety trubled me and weakened my ability t d anything. I felt like a strm clud hung ver me. Fr almst a year I struggled, staring at a wall that faced me. My perfectinism was the main rt f this: I wanted t be perfect at everything, which bviusly in life is nt pssible, but it cnsumed me.
One day, I attended a talk by wildlife cnservatinist Grant Brwn at my high schl. His talk awed and inspired me, and helped me want t make a difference. I jined a pst-talk dinner with him. That smaller setting allwed me t slwly build curage t speak with him alne—smething that had seemed impssible. This first cntact was where my stry began.
A mnth later, Brwn invited me t the Wrld Yuth Wildlife Cnference. Lking back, I see that my ld self wuld have let this chance pass, but the new, mre cnfident Erica enthusiastically seized it. Sn after, applicatins t jin tw yuth nature grups were sent arund my schl. I decided t cmplete them, and sn I was part f a grwing glbal team f yung peple wrking t prtect nature. Each f these new steps cntinued t grw my cnfidence.
I am writing this just six mnths since my jurney began and I’ve realized that my biggest bstacle this whle time was myself. It was that vice in the back f my head telling me that ne phrase that has stpped s many peple frm reaching their ptential: I can’t. They say gd things cme t thse wh wait; I say: grab every pprtunity with everything yu have and be impatient. After all, nature des nt require ur patience, but ur actin.

A team f Chinese scientists has develped Jiuzhang 4.0, the wrld’s fastest quantum (量子) cmputer prttype, accrding t a study published n Wednesday in the jurnal Nature.Their cntributin has pushed the quantum advantage in cmputing t an unprecedented level, demnstrating China's leading psitin in the field.
Led by the University f Science and Technlgy f China (USTC), the team used the prttype t slve the Gaussian bsn sampling prblem at a speed mre than 10 t the 54th times that f the wrld’s mst pwerful supercmputer. This new versin is vastly faster than its predecessr, Jiuzhang 3.0, which was intrduced in 2023.This means that the mst cmplex data sample generated by ‘Jiuzhang 4.0’ takes nly 25 micrsecnds t prduce---shrter than the blink f an eye.
Unlike traditinal cmputers that use bits (0 r 1), quantum cmputers use qubits(量子比特). Thanks t a prperty called superpsitin, a qubit can be 0, 1, r bth at the same time. This allws quantum cmputers t explre many pssible slutins at nce. Jiuzhang 4.0 uses light particles, r phtns, as its qubits. This design avids the extreme cling that many ther quantum cmputers require, making it mre energy-efficient.
Prfessr Pan Jianwei, the leading researcher, stated that the new machine culd be used fr drug design, weather frecasting, and breaking encryptin(加密). Hwever, Pan stressed that Jiuzhang 4.0 is still a “special-purpse” quantum cmputer. It cannt run general sftware like a nrmal PC. “We are nw wrking n a prgrammable, universal quantum cmputer, which may take anther 10 years,” he said in an interview.
Despite this challenge, China’s rapid prgress has pushed the glbal quantum race int high speed. As research cntinues, the dream f a universal quantum cmputer mves clser t reality, prmising t change science and technlgy in the decades ahead.
      28. What des the underlined wrd “predecessr” in paragraph 2 mst likely mean?
      A. A much faster cmputer.B. A different type f cmputer.
      C. A mre advanced cmputer.D. An lder versin f cmputer.
      29. Hw des the authr develp paragraph 3?
      A. By making cmparisns.B. By giving examples.
      C. By listing figures.D. By describing research prcess.
      30. What can we learn abut Jiuzhang4.0 frm the passage?
      A. It is the first quantum cmputer ever built in China.
      B. It is faster than supercmputers n certain tasks.
      C. It requires extreme cling t wrk prperly.
      D. It can run general sftware like a nrmal PC.
      31. What is Prfessr Pan Jianwei’s attitude tward Jiuzhang 4.0?
      A. Dubtful. B. Uncncerned. C. Objective. D. Satisfied.
      D
A burned lunch at Audubn Z in New Orleans did mre than simply disappint a hungry wrker. As sn as smke spread t their area, Australian sleepy lizards (蜥蜴) all f a sudden stpped whatever they were ding — heads up and bdies tense — and started pacing the edges f their fenced area and digging the grund, eager t leave. Hwever, ther species in the same rm didn’t respnd. The incident hit scientists that maybe the lizards had evlved t recgnize a smke’s chemical signals.
T test this, Chris Jlly, a cnservatin bilgist at Macquarie University, and his c-wrkers expsed 10 adult female sleepy lizards t smke, steam and recrdings f wildfire sunds separately. The lizards were in a panic when there was smke but were unaffected by steam r wildfire sunds. The findings suggest these lizards rely n smell rather than hearing t detect fire at lng range, unlike sme ther lizards, frgs and bats.
This agrees with Australian sleepy lizards’ knwn use f smell t recgnize partners, with whm they frm pair-bnds, and t find fd and detect predatrs (捕食者). “Smke als tends t travel ahead f the flames and cuts thrugh backgrund nise,” Jlly says, “making smell a mre reliable early warning than sund in pen, windy, nisy envirnments.”
Many f the lizards tested had likely never experienced wildfire; their site hadn’t burned in mre than 50 years, yet they still reacted strngly when they sensed smke. That culd represent natural adaptatin t fire which the lizards are brn with. Juli Pausas, a scientist at the Spanish Natinal Research Cuncil, says the findings cntribute t the emerging recgnitin that certain animal behavirs may symblize fire adaptatins, a tpic that has been under explred until recently. As wildfires increase with lcal weather change, these abilities might imply the difference between survival and lss f life.
      32. What happened when smke spread at Audubn Z?
      A. Lizards became very nervus.B. Wrkers put it ut at nce.
      C. The animals there stayed calm.D. All species tried t escape.
      33. What is the main purpse f paragraph 2?
      A. T cmpare different animals.B. T test the wildfire influence.
      C. T intrduce an experiment.D. T explain Lizard’s living habits.
      34. What des the new finding abut Lizards mainly cntribute t?
      A. A clear picture f hw lcal weather changes.
      B. A new breakthrugh in wildfire cntrl research.
      C. A better understanding f animals’ fire adaptatin.
      D. A creative methd t prtect endangered lizards.
      35. Which is the best title fr the passage?
      A. A Burned Lunch Saved LizardsB. Wildfires and Lizards’ Safety
      C. The Wildfires Threatened LizardsD. Lizards’ built-in Smke Alarm
