Writer Andrew Leland started lsing his sight 20 years ag, when he was in high schl, as a result f a prgressive eye disease called retinitis pigmentsa (色素性视网膜炎). His first experience f lss f
sight happened temprarily at night, in which he was cnfused that everyne else seemed t see in the dark s much better than he did. Over the years, his disease has prgressed gradually. He’s nw legally blind, althugh he still has a narrw field f visin, which allws him t see abut 6% f what a fully sighted persn sees.
Leland analgized his visin t the view yu might get by lking thrugh a tilet paper tube r a keyhle. He said, “Imagine having that tilet paper tube tied t yur head and trying t walk dwn the street; there’s a whle bunch f things yu dn’t see but that yu really ught t, like dgs.”
In his new bk, The Cuntry f the Blind, Leland writes abut lsing his visin and preparing fr blindness, hw his cnditin impacts his identity, hw the wrld sees him and his marriage, and smething valuable he has learned.
He said he was nt ging t try t tell peple that having visin was nt an unbelievably useful thing fr a human being fr many reasns. When talking abut the experience f being alive and being cnscius, he referred t James Jyce — Jyce believed that he was nly lsing ne wrld amng many, and that visin was nly a tiny part f experiences when he was ging blind.
He thught if yu lked at the things that blind peple were capable f imagining, like Jhn Miltn writing Paradise Lst as a blind persn, there was this unbelievable richness in humans’ cnsciusness that visin had nthing t d with. Other realms (领域) such as the mental and emtinal realms were all s rich that they culd als help unfld things n earth befre yu.

Mst f us have sme “gut feelings” that we can’t explain. Fr example, when we hunt fr a new huse, we might suddenly like it a lt r dislike it right away. Or when we meet new peple, we make instant judgements n them withut careful thught. Research dne by Leeds University shws that these feelings, r intuitins, are real and we shuld take them seriusly.
Accrding t the research, intuitin is the result f the way ur brains stre, prcess and btain infrmatin n a subcnscius (潜意识的) level, and s is a real psychlgical phenmenn that needs further study t help us unlck its ptential.
There are many cases where intuitin prevented majr disasters, and cases f remarkable recveries when dctrs fllwed their gut feelings. Yet, science has histrically questined the cncept f intuitin, labelling it as “anti-scientific” . Thrugh analysis f a wide range f research papers examining the phenmenn, researchers have cncluded that intuitin is the brain drawing n past experiences and external cues t decide — but ne that happens s fast that the reactin is n a nn-cnscius level. All we’re aware f is a general feeling that smething is right r wrng.
Researchers believe that peple usually experience true intuitin when they are under severe time pressure r in a situatin f infrmatin verlad r acute danger, where cnscius analysis f the situatin may be difficult r impssible. They cite a Frmula One driver, wh nce braked suddenly befre a sharp U-turn withut knwing why. This autmatic reactin saved him frm crashing int a pile f cars ahead, likely preventing a fatal accident. Thugh he culdn’t explain his urge t stp, it verrde his cmpetitive drive t win. After psychlgists shwed the driver a vide replay, he realized at that very mment the crwd wasn’t cheering as usual — they std frzen, staring in the ppsite directin as he apprached the U-turn. That was the cue. He didn’t cnsciusly prcess this, but he knew smething was wrng and stpped in time.
Researchers believe that all intuitive experiences are based n the autmatic evaluatin f such internal and external cues. They say that we clearly need bth cnscius and nn-cnscius thught prcesses, but neither is superir t the ther.
      28. What des the research frm Leeds University indicate?
      A. Gut feelings are nt reliable in daily life.
      B. Peple ught t trust their intuitive feelings.
      C. Intuitin is just a randm psychlgical respnse.
      D. Intuitive respnses ften lead t wrng decisins.
      29. Accrding t Paragraph 3, what can we infer abut intuitin?
      A. Intuitin invlves subcnscius prcessing f external cues.
      B. Intuitin nly wrks in life-threatening situatins.
      C. Intuitin relies n cnscius analysis f visible dangers.
      D. Intuitin is a randm guess with n lgical basis.
      30. Which f the fllwing real-life situatins best illustrates the applicatin f intuitin?
      A. A shpper picks a prduct simply because its package lks attractive.
      B. A student slves math prblems by strictly fllwing frmulas and lgical reasning.
      C. A firefighter suddenly rerutes a rescue missin after sensing sme hidden risks.
      D. A student quickly guesses randm answers withut cnsideratin during a timed quiz.
      31. What is the authr’s main purpse in writing this article?
      A. T describe hw brains prcess external cues.
      B. T explain the scientific basis and value f intuitin.
      C. T cmpare cnscius and subcnscius thinking.
      D. T criticize the veruse f intuitin in daily life.

The United States cntributin t castal plastic pllutin wrld-wide is significantly larger than previusly thught, pssibly by as much as five times, accrding t a study published Friday.
Accrding t the research, published in Science Advances, tw factrs cntributed t the sharp increase: Americans are using mre plastic than ever and the current study included pllutin prduced by United States exprts f plastic waste, while the earlier ne did nt.
The United States, which des nt have sufficient infrastructure (基础建设) t handle its recycling demands at hme, exprts abut half f its recyclable waste. Of the ttal exprted, abut 88 percent ends up in cuntries cnsidered t have inadequate waste management.
“When yu cnsider hw much f ur plastic waste isn’t actually recyclable because it is lw-value, plluted r difficult t prcess, it’s nt surprising that a lt f it ends up plluting the envirnment,” said the study’s lead authr, Kara Lavender Law, research prfessr f ceangraphy at Sea Educatin Assciatin, in a statement.
The study estimates that in 2024, the United States cntributed between 2.1 and 3.6 millin tns f plastic waste t the ceans thrugh a cmbinatin f littering, dumping and mismanaged exprts.
At a minimum, that’s almst duble the ttal estimated waste in the team’s previus study. At the high end, it wuld be a fivefld increase ver the earlier estimate.
The ranges are wide partly because “there’s n real standard fr being able t prvide gd quality data n cllectin and dispsal f waste in general,” said Ted Siegler, a resurce ecnmist at DSM Envirnmental Slutins, a cnsulting firm, and an authr f the study.
Mr. Siegler said the researchers had evaluated waste-dispsal practices in cuntries arund the wrld and used their “best prfessinal judgment” t determine the lwest and highest amunts f plastic waste likely t escape int the envirnment. They settled n a range f 25 percent t 75 percent.
Tny Walker, an assciate prfessr at the Dalhusie University Schl fr Resurce and Envirnmental Studies in Halifax, Nva Sctia, said that analyzing waste data can amunt t a “data minefield (危机四伏的局面)” because there are n data standards acrss municipalities. Mrever, nce plastic waste is shipped verseas, he said, data is ften nt recrded at all.
Nnetheless, Dr. Walker, wh was nt invlved in the study, said it culd ffer a mre accurate accunting f plastic pllutin than the previus study, which likely underestimated the United States’ cntributin. “They’ve put their best estimate, as accurate as they can be with this data,” he said, and used ranges, which underscres that the figures are estimates.
      32. Accrding t the research, what has made the US cntributin t castal plastic pllutin higher than thught?
      A. Mre unrecyclable plastic waste has been prduced.
      B. Peple have n device at hme t dispse f plastic waste.
      C. Americans have begun t exprt plastic waste recently.
      D. Sme nce excluded data is nw included in the study.
      33. Why is there a wide range in the team’s estimate?
      A. Cuntries arund the wrld vary a lt in the amunt f plastic waste.
      B. Mre plastic waste has escaped int the envirnment than befre.
      C. N such data-related standard is widely acknwledged.
      D. The team hpes t give a pssible prspect.
      34. It can be inferred frm the passage that Tny Walker .
      A. desn’t think the team’s estimates are that accurate
      B. underestimates the US cntributin t plastic waste
      C. desn’t think that the team shuld prvide such estimates
      D. feels regretful that he hasn’t been invlved in the study
      35. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
      A. Castal Plastic Pllutin in the US
      B. Plastic Pllutin Underestimated in the US
      C. Difficulties f Recycling Plastic Waste in the US
      D. Data Minefield: Waste Pllutin in the US

In the 1960s and 1970s, the greatest fear was that the human race, and pssibly all advanced life frms n the planet, culd be wiped ut by nuclear missiles. 36 Scientists are thinking f ways t lwer this risk, such as replacing cal and il with frms f renewable energy. But they are als preparing fr the wrst: what can we d if the earth can n lnger sustain us?
37 The mst likely chice is Mars, which is relatively clse t Earth and has an envirnment mre friendly than that f ther planets. Mars has fascinated peple since ancient times, and tday ur interest in Martian explratin is greater than ever befre. Since the 1960s, we have been sending unmanned spacecraft t Mars. 38 Our rbts have explred the Martian surface, testing the sil and searching fr resurces, water and signs f life.
Hwever, sending peple there will require all the skill, curage and intelligence f the human race. While the Mn can be reached within days, it wuld take mnths t reach Mars, travelling thrugh dangerus slar radiatin. And even if the first settlers d reach Mars safely, they may nt be able t return t Earth — ever. 39 As early as the 1980s, scientists were building Bisphere 2 in the Arizna desert, cnsisting f a clsed space in which peple, animals and plants culd live tgether. Althugh the tw-year experiment was a failure, it did prvide us with a better understanding f hw humans might be able t live n anther planet.
Anyway, human settlement f Mars is still decades away. In the meantime, scientific research shws that the planet Earth is getting warmer. This change is being caused by human activity and is having a terrible effect n the glbe. 40
      A. One ptin is t explre ther planets t see if we culd live n them.
      B. We definitely cnsider it as a big step frward.
      C. Until we are finally able t live n anther planet, we need t take far better care f ur wn.
      D. Right nw, it’s the nly ne we have.
      E. Our prbes have rbited the planet, sending back valuable data and stunning images.
      F. Staying alive will be a daily challenge, but isn’t impssible, as prved by scientists.
      G. Tday, hwever, envirnmental prblems have taken ver as the greatest risk t life n Earth.
