Eating a traditinal Mediterranean-type diet-rich in fds such as seafd, fruit, and nuts- -may help reduce the risk f dementia (痴呆) by almst a quarter, a new study has revealed.
Experts at Newcastle University fund that individuals wh ate a Mediterranean-like diet had up t 23% lwer risk fr dementia than thse wh did nt. This research, published tday in the jurnal BMC Medicine, is ne f the biggest studies f its kind.
Scientists analyzed data frm 60,298 individuals frm the UK Bibank, including individuals frm acrss the UK, wh had cmpleted a dietary assessment. The authrs scred individuals based n hw clsely their diet matched the key features f a Mediterranean ne. The participants were allwed fr almst a decade, during which time there were 882 cases f dementia.
The authrs cnsidered each individual’s genetic risk fr dementia by estimating what is knwn as their plygenic (多基因的) risk-a measure f all the different genes that are related t the risk f dementia. They fund that there were similar assciatins between sticking t Mediterranean diet and dementia risk in individuals with higher and lwer genetic risk fr this cnditin, which may indicate that even fr thse with a higher genetic risk, having a better diet culd reduce the likelihd f develping the cnditin.
Dr Janice Ransn, jint lead authr n the paper, said: “Dementia impacts the lives f millins f individuals thrughut the wrld, and there are currently limited ptins fr treating this cnditin. Our study shws a Mediterranean diet that has a high intake f healthy plant-based fds may be imprtant fr future strategies t reduce dementia risk. Fr example, the dementia preventin effrts culd g beynd general healthy diet advice and fcus n chsing specific fds and nutrients.”
The authrs cautin that their analysis is limited t individuals wh self-reprted their ethnic backgrund as white, British r Irish, as genetic data was nly available based n Eurpean cuntries, and that further research is needed in a range f ppulatins t determine the ptential benefit.
24. What did scientists d during the study?
A.They scred the Mediterranean diet.
B.They tracked the participants’ health.
C.They cllected data frm 60298 families.
D.They selected 882 ptential dementia cases.
25. What can we infer abut the Mediterranean diet frm paragraph 4?
A.Its effect is clsely related t the plygenic risk.
B.It increases ne’s chance f develping dementia.
C.It can reduce dementia risk regardless f ne’s genetic risk.
D.It can prvide prtectin against varius genetic diseases.
26. What are Dr Janice Ransn’s wrds mainly abut?
A.Values f the study.
B.Features f the study.
C.Elements f a healthy diet.
D.Ways t deal with dementia.
27. What will further research mst prbably fcus n?

The Suth Ple has been warming at mre than three times the glbal average ver the past 30 years, accrding t research led by Ohi University prfessr Ryan Fgt, and Kyle Clem, wh is a current pstdctral research fellw in climate science. Accrding t the study, this warming perid was mainly driven by natural trpical (热带的) climate variability and was likely strengthened by increases in greenhuse gases.
Clem and his team analyzed weather statin data at the Suth Ple, as well as climate mdels t examine the warming in the Antarctic interir (内陆). They fund that between 1989 and 2018, the Suth Ple had warmed by abut 1. 8℃ ver the past 30 years at a rate f +0. 6℃ per decade—three times the glbal average.
The study als fund that the strng warming ver the Antarctic interir in the last 30 years was mainly driven by the trpics, especially warm cean temperatures in the western trpical Pacific Ocean that changed the winds in the Suth Atlantic near Antarctica and increased the delivery f warm air t the Suth Ple. They suggest these atmspheric changes alng Antarctica's cast are an imprtant mechanism driving climate anmalies (异常事物) in its interir.
Clem and Fgt argue that these warming trends were unlikely the result f natural climate change alne, stressing the effects f added warming related t human activities n tp f the large trpical climate signal n Antarctic climate have wrked tgether t make this ne f the strngest warming trends wrldwide.
“Frm the very beginning, Kyle and I wrked very well tgether and were able t accmplish mre as a team than we were individually,” Fgt said. “We have published every year tgether since 2013, with ne f ur cntinuing cllabratins being the annual State f the Climate reprts. Our wrk n this prject tgether each year ultimately led t this publicatin dcumenting the warming at the Suth Ple. Hwever, mst imprtantly fr my family and me, apart frm being a fantastic scientist and cllabratr, Kyle is als cnsidered as ne f ur clsest friends.”
28. What is the majr cause f the Suth Ple's warming accrding t the research?
A.The weather statin.
B.Lack f winds.
C.Increases f greenhuse gases.
D.Natural trpical climate change.

A third f the Arctic’s tundra (北极冻土), frests and wetlands have becme a surce f carbn emissins (排放), a new study has fund, as glbal heating ends thusands f years f carbn strage.
Fr thusands f years, Arctic land ecsystems have acted as a deep-freeze, hlding ptential emissins in the tundra. But ecsystems in the regin are releasing mre CO2 int the atmsphere with rising temperatures, a study published in Nature Climate Change cncluded.
Mre than 30% f the regin was a surce f CO2, accrding t the analysis, rising t 40% when emissins frm wildfires were included. By using data frm 200 study sites between 1990 and 2020, the research demnstrates hw the Arctic’s tundra, frests and wetlands are being transfrmed by rapid warming.
The shift is ccurring despite the Arctic becming greener. “One place where I wrk in Alaska, when the tundra unfreezes, the plants that absrb CO2 grw mre, s yu can smetimes get an uptick in carbn strage”, Sue Natalia, the lead researcher said. “But the tundra cntinues t unfreeze and the micrbes (微生物) take ver. Yu can visually see the changes in the landscape.”
There is a grwing cncern abut the natural prcesses that regulate the Earth’s climate, which are being affected by rising temperatures. Tgether, the planet’s ceans, frests, sils and ther natural carbn sinks absrb abut half f all human emissins, but there are signs that these sinks are under stress.
The Arctic ecsystem has been gathering carbn fr thusands f years, helping cl the atmsphere. In a warming wrld, the researchers say, its carbn cycle is beginning t change and needs better mnitring. Dr Anna Virkkala, the authr f the study, said, “The carbn in the Arctic sil is clse t half f the Earth’s sil carbn pl, much mre than in the atmsphere. This huge pl shuld ideally stay in the grund. But nw, rising temperatures are speeding the breakdwn f plant and animal remains, which releases stred carbn back int the air as greenhuse gases like CO2, creating a cycle that fuels even mre warming.”
32. What’s the main reasn fr the release f carbn frm Arctic sils?
A.Tundra defrsting.
B.Wildfire erupting.
C.Tree ver-cutting.
D.Wetland disappearing.
33. What des the underlined wrd “uptick” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Bst.
B.Lss.
C.Limit.
D.Release.
34. What can we infer abut the Arctic’s sil carbn pl accrding t Dr Anna Virkkala?
A.It has less carbn than the air.
B.It ught t be stred in the tundra.
C.It can break dwn rganic matter.
D.It is less affected by glbal warming.
35. What is the main idea f the text?
A.Arctic greening cuts carbn emissins.
B.Mre carbn is being released in Arctic.
C.Arctic carbn strage is grwing rapidly.
D.Extreme climate makes Arctic inhabitable.
