Is it pssible t persuade mankind t live withut war? War is an ancient practice which has existed fr at least six thusand years. It was always bad and usually flish, but in the past, the human race managed t live with it. Mdern cleverness has changed this. Either Man will end the existence f war, r war will end the existence f Man. Fr the present, it is nuclear weapns that cause the mst serius danger, but bacterilgical r chemical weapns may, befre lng, ffer an even greater threat. If we succeeded in ending the existence f nuclear weapns, ur wrk wuld nt be dne. It will never be dne until we have succeeded in ending war. T d this, we need t persuade mankind t lk upn internatinal prblems in a new way nt as cntests f frce, in which the victry ges t the side which is mst skilful in killing peple, but by settling in accrdance with agreed rules f law. It is nt easy t change very ld mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.
There are thse wh say that the acceptance f this r that idelgy wuld prevent war. I believe this t be a big mistake. All idelgies are based upn dgmatic statements which are, at best, dubtful, and at wrst, ttally false. Their supprters believe in them s deeply that they are willing t g t war in supprt f them.
The mvement f wrld pinin during the past few years has been very largely such as we can welcme. It has becme a cmmnplace that nuclear war must be avided. Of curse very difficult prblems remain in the wrld, but the spirit in which they are cming nearer t is a better ne than it was sme years ag. It has begun t be thught, even by the pwerful men wh decide whether we shall live r die, that negtiatins shuld reach agreements even if bth sides d nt find these agreements whlly satisfactry. It has begun t be understd that the imprtant struggle nwadays is nt between different cuntries but between Man and the atm bmb.
60. This passage implies that war is nw _______.
A. wrse than in the pastB. as bad as in the past
C. nt s dangerus as in the pastD. as necessary as in the past
61. Frm Paragraph 2 we learn that the writer f the passage ________.
is a supprter f sme mdern idelgies
des nt think that the acceptance f any idelgies culd prevent war
believes that the acceptatin f sme idelgies culd prevent war
des nt dubt the truth f any idelgies
62. Accrding t the writer, _______.
war is the nly way t slve internatinal arguments
war will be less dangerus because f the imprvement f weapns
it is impssible fr peple t live withut war
war must be ended if Man wants t survive
63. The last paragraph suggests that _______.
internatinal agreements can be reached mre easily nw
Man begins t realize the danger f nuclear war
nuclear war will surely nt take place
wrld pinin welcmes nuclear war

In 2004, Liu wn the silver in the wrld indr champinships in Budapest in March. Tw mnths later, he prved the winner in a race against American great Allen Jhnsn in the IAAF Grand Prix in Osaka, Japan, where he clcked a new Asian recrd and wrld’s seasn best time f 13.06 secnds.
He went n t win tw Jhnsn-absent races in Lille, France, n June 26 and Zagreb, Cratia, three days later. He put up an exciting shw at the Glden Gala meet in Rme n July 3, when he and Jhnsn clcked an identical time f 13.11. Race fficials had t examine a pht finish t declare Jhnsn the winner. Liu did a better jb f clearing the hurdles than Jhnsn, but Jhnsn’s strnger start ended up making the difference. The race bsted Liu’s ptimism fr the Olympics, althugh Jhnsn bettered his seasn best time by 0.01 secnd in Lausanne, Switzerland, n July 6.
The wrld has put the Olympics a Jhnsn-Liu duel but surprisingly Jhnsn crashed ut f the Games after falling at the ninth hurdle at rund 2. Jhnsn’s early exit paved the way fr Liu’s win. He finally tk the gld medal and put a Chinese man’s name n the recrd bk.
