Accrding t a 2002 survey by the Internatinal Institute f Trpical Agriculture and the US Agency fr Internatinal Develpment, abut 284,000 children wrk in dangerus cnditins n caca farms in western Africa.

“Mind yur wn business,” we’re tld. “Dn’t talk abut thers behind their backs.” The prblem with this advice is that, nt nly is it unrealistic, it’s als cunterprductive(起反作用的).
Cmmn sense hlds that gssip(流言蜚语) hurts peple’s feelings and damages relatinships. But recent research shws the ppsite — that strng cmmunities and relatinships between peple wuld be impssible withut gssip.
Gssip is a way fr peple t let yu knw the limits f scial behavir. “If yu mve int a cmmunity and yur neighbr tells yu hw the frmer hmewner never dealt with his rubbish prperly, his gssip is letting yu in n smething,” says Dr. Ralph Rsnw f Temple University. “Gssip says: these are the bundaries and yu are crssing them. Yu’re nt abiding by the rules and yu’d better get back in line.” Seen this way, gssip is a way t cmmunicate criticism(批评) withut cnflict(冲突), giving yu a chance t change yur behavir withut lsing face.
On the ther hand, what abut ill-willed gssip, the kind that puts ther peple dwn? Gssip is hearing smething we like abut smene we dn’t and, in nearly every cuntry in the wrld, gssip magazines have huge numbers f readers. Accrding t researchers, hwever, this kind f gssip als has a gd side because it helps us put ur wn prblems in perspective(正确地). “If we read bad news abut well-knwn peple, r get the frightful details f ur neighbrs’ bad situatin ver a cup f cffee, ur wn prblems begin t pale in cmparisn,” says Dr. Jack Levin f Nrtheastern University.
Hwever, that desn’t mean that gssip is necessarily a gd thing, either. Researchers fund that peple wh gssip a lt tend t feel like they’re under a lt f stress. This might be because while they’re busy talking abut ther peple, they’re als busy thinking what ther peple are saying abut them.
      64. What is the purpse f the text?
      A. T encurage us t spread gssip abut thers.

We all knw that the nrmal human daily cycle f activity is f sme 7-8 hurs’ sleep alternating (交替) with sme 16-17 hurs’ wakefulness and that, bradly speaking, the sleep nrmally cincides with (与……相符) the hurs f darkness. Our present cncern is with hw easily and t what this cycle can be mdified.

One answer wuld seem t be a lnger perid n each shift, a mnth, r even three mnths. Recent research by Bnjer f the Netherlands, hwever, has shwn that peple n such systems will revert t their nrmal habits f sleep and wakefulness during the weekend and that this is quite enugh t destry any adaptatin t night wrk built up during the week.
The nly real slutin appears t be t hand ver the night shift t a crp f permanent(永久的) night wrkers whse ncturnal(夜间的) wakefulness may last thrugh all weekends and hlidays. An interesting study f the dmestic life and health f night-shift wrkers was carried ut by Brwn. She fund a high incidence f disturbed sleep, digestive(消化的)disrder and dmestic disruptin (扰乱) amng thse n alternating day and night shifts. But n abnrmal ccurrence f these symptms(症状) amng thse n permanent night wrk.

      B. t make perids n each shift lnger
      C. t emply peple wh will always wrk at night
