“They’d been thrugh a lt, and they’d seen a lt, and their lives were difficult,” Dunn says. “But when they were fishing, all f that disappeared. Out n the bat, they’d be laughing and smiling and making new friends. I knew I was n t smething.”
In the beginning, Dunn— “Big Will” t the kids—spent a large part f his mney frm his jb selling tires t rent (租) bats fr the kids. Then, in 2018, he started the nn-prfit Take a Kid Fishing Inc. He and a small grup f vlunteers have intrduced mre than 2, 500 kids—mst withut fathers arund—t the calming peace fund n the water and the excitement f catching a fish.
Just as imprtant as the fishing are the relatinships Dunn frms with the kids.
One f thse kids was Jayden Pryr, nw 13, wh had a hard time when his father died in a car accident in January 2020. After jining Take a Kid Fishing prgram, he tld his mm that Big Will had given him a sense f purpse (目标感). And, Jayden’s grades have imprved t. He has becme very interested in fishing and thanks Dunn fr helping him mature (成熟). He als mentins that he nce caught a shark with Dunn’s help. “I hpe he knws I mean it when I say thank yu,” he says.
Anther regular angler (钓鱼爱好者), Bella Smith, says that Dunn emphasizes self-respect and mental tughness. “I’m able t frget abut the past when I’m fishing and fcus n smething fun and psitive,” says Smith, 21, wh is in a fster prgram fr yung adults while she takes autmtive classes at a technical cllege. “Fishing is learning fr life.
