Scientists frm the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT) have made a new “bubble wrap” that can cllect clean drinking water frm the air—even in Death Valley, the driest desert in Nrth America.
This inventin culd help many peple arund the wrld get safe drinking water, especially in places where water is hard t find. The team shared their results in a study n June 11, 2025.
The device uses a water-absrbing material called hydrgel (水凝胶), placed between tw layers f glass, much like a windw. At night, it takes water vapr frm the air. During the day, the water vapr turns int liquid n the cl glass and then flws int small tubes.
The hydrgel has many small dmes, like bubble wrap. These dmes grw bigger when they take in water frm the air. They increase the surface area, helping the material cllect mre water.
Scientists tested the device fr ne week in Death Valley. Each panel made abut 57 t 161 milliliters f water daily—abut a quarter t tw-thirds f a cup. In wetter areas, it culd make even mre. The device als wrks withut electricity.
Older designs had a prblem: lithium (锂) salt, used t help take in water, smetimes leaked (泄漏) int the water and made it dangerus t drink. But this new design uses glycerl (甘油) which keeps the salt frm leaking. This way, the lithium salt level stays far belw safety limits.
Eight panels (each abut 1 metre by 2 metres) culd prvide enugh water fr a family. The system is nt t expensive and can last at least a year.
“We imagine these panels culd be used in many places,” said MIT researcher Xuanhe Zha. “They dn’t take up much space, and peple can build mre f them t make a real difference.”
