When he gt there, Oberman fund a surfer, a man in his late 30s struggling against the strng current, with an elderly man in his 70s hlding n t the back f the surfbard. Apparently, they entered the water against the advisry n the radi. “My c-wrker grasped the surfer. Meanwhile, I was helping the lder man,” Oberman said.
Nrmally, Oberman wuld lay the guy n the surfbard, climb up behind, and paddle frm there. He tried that technique at first and quickly realized it was nt wrking.
Waves hit against the rcky reef abut 27 meters behind them, and the current was pulling them int it. “If I stp paddling, we’re definitely ging t be in that zne,” Oberman recalled. At that mment, he just fcused n frward mvement and kept thinking that as lng as they were nt ging backward, that was gd.
After abut five minutes — “even thugh it felt lnger” — Oberman’s partner had gtten the surfer safely t shre and started cming back t assist him. After a shrt time, the Jet Ski finally came t the channel t help.
It was a gd rescue. When asked what it feels like t save smene’s life, Oberman respnded, “I lve it! That’s why we d it!” But as exciting as it might be t perfrm a big rescue, he explained that the mst imprtant part f his jb was t prevent peple frm getting int truble in the first place. “A dry lifeguard is a gd lifeguard.”

In the summer f 2021, an unusual event tk place. Mre than 100 miles f Flrida’s cast arund Tampa Bay became an xygen-depleted (缺氧的) zne cntaining dead fish alng the nearby shreline.
Much f the cnversatin arund ur climate crisis highlights the emissin f greenhuse gases and their effect n warming and sea-level rise. We hear little abut the effect f climate change n xygen levels, particularly in ceans and lakes. But water withut enugh xygen cannt supprt life. Fr the three billin peple wh depend n castal fisheries fr incme, declining cean xygen levels are damaging.
As scientists fcus n climate, we believe that ceanic xygen levels are the next big victim f glbal warming. T stp the situatin frm wrsening, we need t expand ur attentin t include the dangerus state f ceanic xygen levels — the life-supprt system f ur planet. We need t accelerate (加速) cean-based climate slutins that bst xygen. Examples include nature-based slutins such as thse discussed at the 2021 United Natins Climate Change Cnference (COP26) held in Glasgw.
Enhanced mnitring f xygen and the establishment f an xygen-accunting system are a must. Putting xygen int the climate stry mtivates us t d the wrk t understand the deep systemic changes happening in ur cmplex atmspheric and ceanic systems. We celebrated the return f humpback whales in recent years t an increasingly clean New Yrk Harbr and Hudsn River. Hwever, dead fish blcked the Hudsn in the summer as warmer waters carried less xygen.
Ecsystem changes cnnected t physical and chemical system-level data may pint the way t new appraches t climate slutins. It includes an enhanced understanding f the life-supprt system f ur planet. Rughly 40 percent f the wrld’s peple depend n the cean fr their livelihds. If we d nt save marine life frm xygen starvatin, we starve urselves.
28. What is the result f less cean xygen accrding t the text?
A. Sudden sea-level rises.
B. Shrtage f water resurces.
C. Increased deaths f sea animals.
D. Unusual climate change in castal areas.
29. What d scientists advise t deal with cean xygen lss?
A. Repair life-supprting system.
B. Stp all cean-related activities.
C. Build mre castal fishing areas.
D. Speed up xygen-bsting slutins.
30. What des the authr imply in the last paragraph?
A. Physical data can slve all climate prblems.
B. Marine life is facing serius xygen shrtage.
C. Mst peple make a living in fishing industry.
D. Ocean life is clsely linked t human survival.
31. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. Let Oceans Breathe.B. Prtect Marine Life.
C. Fix the Climate Crisis.D. Clean the Ocean Water.

Chinese researchers have recently develped a nvel wearable artificial intelligence (AI) system t assist blind individuals with navigatin, with the findings published Mnday in the jurnal Nature Machine Intelligence.
The system integrates visual, sund, and tuch signals, using AI algrithms t scan the surrunding envirnment. When the wearer appraches bstacles r bjects, it sends signals t guide them thrugh mvements, bject handling, and ther visual tasks, thereby enhancing their independence in daily life. Fr instance, if smene is abut t bump int a chair, the system will warn them thrugh vice messages r gentle vibratins (振动), allwing them t avid danger and handle tasks mre easily.
This breakthrugh in bimedical engineering was led by Gu Leilei, an assciate prfessr at Shanghai Jia Tng University, in cperatin with researchers frm Fudan University, the Hng Kng University f Science and Technlgy, East China Nrmal University, and ther partners.
The team innvatively cmbined advanced AI algrithms with hardware systems. Equipped with a camera fr visual data cllectin, the device prcesses envirnmental infrmatin thrugh AI, then sends navigatin cmmands via bne-cnductin earphnes (which dn’t blck utside sunds) and a sft electrnic patch n the wrist. When bstacles r targets are identified, the system generates real-time cmmands like “advance,” “turn left,” r “grasp” until tasks are cmpleted.
During virtual simulatins and real-wrld tests, the system demnstrated superir perfrmance in experiments invlving bth humanid rbts and visually impaired participants. Humanid rbts using this technlgy successfully mved thrugh cmplicated hspital hallways, aviding bstacles 98.7% f the time. Meanwhile, blind participants cmpleted difficult bject-finding tasks with an 89% success rate. Ntably, the system’s active learning capability allws cntinuus perfrmance imprvement thrugh user interactin. Clinical evaluatins shwed a 40% reductin in cllisin frequency cmpared t traditinal white cane navigatin.
This innvatin nt nly redefines assistive technlgy fr the visually impaired but als pineers new applicatins fr human-machine cperatin in medical rehabilitatin and smart city infrastructure. The team has initiated partnerships with disability rganizatins t cnduct large-scale field trials, aiming fr regulatry apprval and cmmercializatin within tw years.
32. What is the main purpse f the wearable AI system mentined in the text?
A. T replace traditinal white canes cmpletely.
B. T cmbine sensry signals fr navigatin assistance.
C. T mnitr users’ health cnditins remtely.
D. T prvide entertainment fr blind individuals.
33. Hw des the system help users avid bstacles?
A. By physically mving them away frm danger.
B. By autmatically stpping their mvement.
C. By sending vice messages r vibratins.
D. By changing the envirnment’s layut.
34. Why might researchers have chsen bne-cnductin earphnes instead f regular head phnes?
A. T ensure users can still hear envirnmental sunds.
B. Because they are cheaper t prduce.
C. T make the device lk mre futuristic.
D. Because they prvide luder audi feedback.
35. What is the authr’s attitude twards the breakthrugh f this assistive technlgy?
A. Disapprving.B. Prmising.C. Indifferent.D. Cnservative.
