After viewing several lcatins, Mejia discvered a suitable place. In late 2024, the new Plant Chica pened. The redesigned greenhuse, with gravel paths and a weather-resistant dme (圆屋顶), became an instant favrite. The new space is special fr anther reasn: The pen space allws Mejia t mre easily facilitate the cmmunity events and cperatin she is knwn fr.
When Amrette Brms, a fellw small business wner, faced the clsure f her business, Mejia ffered her free space at Plant Chica. This actin turned int a sustainable mdel: currently, fur lcal marketers perate their businesses rent-free within the greenhuse. “This mdel gives small businesses a chance t grw,” Brms said. Fr Mejia, Plant Chica is mre than a plant stre. It's prf that when peple cme tgether, beautiful things grw.

Self-cnfidence means trusting ur abilities and is generally regarded as psitive. But is it pssible that we might benefit frm a little less cnfidence in ur beliefs?
Fr many years, Dr. Mark Leary, a neurscientist at Duke University, has studied the rle f peple’s beliefs in their behavir. He fund vercnfidence is very cmmn, especially in persnal beliefs, and can lead us t disastrus decisins. In 1986, NASA put space flight lss risk at rughly 1 in 100,000. It was an vercnfident belief and might have led t the explsin f the Challenger. The gd news is that there’s a “vaccine (疫苗)” fr vercnfidence, and that’s what scientists call “intellectual humility (谦逊)” — recgnizing that yur beliefs culd be wrng.
A survey f 144 cllege students t measure their intellectual humility fund that students wh saw their thinking culd be wrng tended t be mre curius and mre likely t seek ut new knwledge. They ended up knwing mre at the end f the day. But des it actually help yu beynd that?
T find ut mre, Dr. Tenelle Prter at Ball State University cnducted a series f studies with high schl students. She fund that students with intellectual humility were much mre likely t test themselves t see whether they really understd the material and seek ut ptential knwledge gaps. When they gt test scres, they’d change their study strategies t imprve their perfrmance and master the material fr the next test.
Students wh didn’t see their knwledge culd be wrng might instead just sail thrugh their studying and wuldn’t stp t ask themselves if they truly understd the material. Such students thught they gt a subject dwn pat, they fund they didn’t actually understand as much as they had thught.
Althugh it might be gd fr yu, researchers recgnize that questining yur beliefs can be truly hard. Still, it’s imprtant t remember that questining beliefs isn’t always abut replacing ld nes with new nes. If yu find it hard t questin a belief, try taking “baby steps.”
      8. Why des the authr mentin the explsin f the Challenger?
      A. T express his srrw fr the lss.B. T stress the high risk f space flights.
      C. T give an example f vercnfidence.D. T shw the result f wrng peratin.
      9. What d we knw abut intellectual humility accrding t Prter’s research?
      A. It encuraged students t take exams.
      B. It urged students t gain recgnitin.
      C. It mtivated students t memrize knwledge.
      D. It helped students t adjust learning methds.
      10. It can be inferred frm Paragraph 5 that the students mentined ________.
      A. try t avid difficult learning tasks
      B. hld an unrealistic pinin f their learning
      C. refuse t spend much time n their learning
      D. have wrng methds f learning new lessns
      11. What will prbably be discussed in the fllwing paragraphs?
      A. Why questining ur belief is hard.B. Why intellectual humility is helpful.
      C. Hw t becme a cnfident persn.D. Hw t practice intellectual humility.
      D
A new study published in the Jurnal f Applied Eclgy revealed when, where and hw mst sngbirds migrate ffshre ver Nrth American casts. This data can help wind energy managers cut dwn n birds dying frm hitting wind turbines (涡轮机) while generating sustainable energy.
The researchers studied 10 years f weather radar data frm 16 sites and fund that birds flying ver the Atlantic Cast and the Gulf f Mexic gather mre clsely and mve fr a shrter time than thse flying ver land. Mre birds als migrate in fall than in spring. Shannn Curley, the study’s lead researcher, explained, “Birds migrate ver the sea n fewer nights than ver land. There’s n place t rest and refuel n the water, s birds may wait fr ideal atmspheric cnditins, such as favrable winds, befre making an ffshre crssing.”
This shrt yet critical time windw gives wind energy managers a chance t reduce cllisins (相撞). Curley said they culd pause turbine wrk n nights when migratin is mst intense-a practice that is currently mre cmmn in Eurpe than Nrth America. “These peak nights f migratin tend t have fairly nice weather and calmer winds, and are therefre nt the nights when wind peratrs have a huge energy harvest,” Curley nted. “S there might be a sweet spt where we can target these big migratin nights and give these birds safe passage.”
The study als fund that sngbirds migrating ffshre fly at lwer altitudes than thse migrating ver land, ptentially putting them at greater risk f wind turbine cllisins. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says 140,000 t 327,000 birds die frm land turbines each year. But n ne knws hw many die frm ffshre turbines, since dead birds’ bdies wash away easily. S using radar technlgy t identify high-risk areas is key.
With ne-third f all American bird species rapidly declining, data-driven decisins abut turbine siting and peratins can pint the way t sustainable energy while als saving birds. “Our hpe is that this wrk will help identify high-risk, high-use areas fr birds and cntribute t psitive green energy slutins,” Curley said.
      12. What can we learn abut the sngbirds in paragraph 2?
      A. They favr flying ver pen seas.B. They becme mre active n spring nights.
      C. They are particular abut where t rest.D. They time crssings by weather cnditins.
      13. What des the underlined phrase “a sweet spt” refer t?
      A. An ideal balance.B. A mral dilemma
      C. An pprtunity fr prfit.D. A place withut turbines
      14. Why is it difficult t identify high-risk areas ffshre?
      A. Birds change their travelling rutes.B. Wind strength at sea is unpredictable.
      C. Dead birds’ bdies are hard t trace.D. Radar technlgy is underdevelped.
      15. What is the main idea f the passage?
      A. Radar changes sngbird migratin study.
      B. Study balances energy and bird prtectin.
      C. Nrth America tests bird-smart wind practices.
      D. Offshre turbines kill mre birds than land nes.

Withut gravity, rts dn’t “knw” t grw dwn, leaves dn’t “knw” t grw up, and water desn’t easily travel up the rts t the leaves. ____19____ Besides, sil is t heavy t send t space, and special liquid gels (胶) are used t help plant grwth.
Scientists are als wrking n the plants themselves. They are trying t make plants grw mre rapidly and grw with less water and light in space, and they are lking fr ways t make plants mre resistant t disease. ____20____ Imagine that deserts may ne day prvide lts f fresh fd fr lcal peple, saving transprtatin csts. Similarly, plants that are resistant t disease culd prvide an imprtant fd supply. With the wrld’s ppulatin nw at seven billin (十亿) peple, ur astrnaut gardeners may help discver ways t feed thse billins.

      C. Such methds may result in imprvements back here n Earth.
