During the last five years, a large number f clthing cmpanies, businesses and envirnmental rganizatins have started turning plastics int fabric(织物)t deal with plastic pllutin. But there’s a prblem with this methd. Research nw shws that micrfibers culd be the biggest surce f plastic in the sea.
Dr. Mark Brwne in Santa Barbara, Califrnia, has been studying plastic pllutin and micrfibers fr 10 years nw. He explains that every time synthetic(合成的)clthes g int a washing machine, a large number f plastic fibers fall ff. Mst washing machines can’t cllect these micrfibers. S every time the water gets ut f a washing machine, micrfibers are entering the sewers(下水道)and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011, Brwne wrte a paper stating that a single piece f synthetic clthing can prduce mre than 1, 900 fibers per wash. Brwne cllected samples frm seawater and freshwater sites arund the wrld, and used a special way t examine each sample. He discvered that every single water sample cntained micrfibers.
This is bad news fr a number f reasns. Plastic can cause harm t sea life when eaten. Studies have als shwn that plastic can absrb ther pllutants.
Based n this evidence, it may seem surprising that cmpanies and rganizatins have chsen t turn plastic waste int clthing as an envirnmental “slutin.” Even thugh the science has been arund fr a while, Brwne explains that he's had a difficult time getting cmpanies t listen. When he asked well-knwn clthing cmpanies t supprt Benign by Design—his research prject that seeks t get clthes that have a bad effect n humans and the envirnment ut f the market, Brwne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only ne wmen’s clthing cmpany, Eileen Fisher, ffered Brwne funding.

Researchers, led by Sarah Jelbert at the University f Auckland in New Zealand, presented six crws with tubes filled with water. Inside the tubes, a wrm r piece f meat n a piece f wd was flating, just ut f reach f the crw. In frnt f the tubes, the researchers arranged several rubber erasers that wuld sink, and sme plastic bjects that wuld flat. The crws fund ut that they culd drp the erasers int the tubes in rder t raise the water level and get their snack.
Hwever, the birds handled awkwardly in experiments in which they culd chse t drp bjects in either a wide tube r a narrw ne t get a snack, the researchers said. Drpping bjects int narrw tube wuld lift the water level by a greater amunt and put the treat within reach after just tw drps; while it tk arund seven drps t raise the snack t the same level in the wide tube. The crws bviusly didn’t realize this, and mst f them went fr the wide tube first.
Previus studies shwed that chimps and human children can slve similar tasks. In a 2011 study, chimps and kids fund ut that they culd put water int a tube t reach a peanut that was flating in a small amunt f water at the bttm.

It says ships still cntinue t rub against the canal’s walls and wear ut its defenses designed t prtect bth shipping and the waterway.
A dangerus system
The canal links tw ceans-the Atlantic and the Pacific-thrugh a system f lcks (船闸). The lcks are like steps. They raise and lwer ships frm ne part f the waterway t anther n their trip frm cean t cean.
With the ld lcks, which are still in use, large ships wuld be tied t pwerful engines n bth sides. These engines help t keep the ships in the center f the canal. In the new lcks, the ships are tied t tugbats (拖船). One tugbat is tied t the frnt f the ship, with the ther tied t the back. These bats then guide the ships thrugh the canal.
At first, pilts f the carg ships and tugbat peratrs wuld smetimes try t rub the bats against the canal walls as a way t keep the ships straight. But this caused damage t rubber padding (垫料) lining the walls.
Nt enugh training
Even befre the expanded canal pened in June 2016, tugbat peratrs had expressed cncern abut the new system. Many asked fr mre training. The fears and dangers remain, althugh the bats are ging thrugh.
The Panama Canal Authrity reprts that, between June 2016 and January 2017, there were nly 15 incidents that resulted in damage t lcks r ships. That represents abut 2 percent f the 700 times ships that have sailed thrugh the expanded canal.

1、What is the main prblem with the newly expanded Panama Canal?

A.The ld lcks dn’t need rubber padding as defenses.
B.The new lcks need tugbats tied t bth sides f the ships.
C.The new lcks are easier fr the largest ships t pass thrugh the canal.
D.The ld lcks need pwerful engines t drag the ships thrugh the canal.
3、What is the Panama Canal Authrity’s attitude twards the expanded canal?
A.Cautius. B.Critical.
C.Psitive. D.Dubtful.
4、What can we learn abut the current system f defenses?
A.N ships shall rub against the canal walls t prtect it.

C.Mre training will be given t pilts fr it.
D.A new system will replace it.
