21.(6分) That cmpetitin keeps prices dwn is well knwn. But it is hard t measure by just hw much, because prices vary fr all srts f reasns, frm differences in labur csts and rents t taxes. Rising t the challenge is a new paper in The Ecnmic Jurnal by Giacm Calzlari, Andrea Ichin, Francesc Manaresi and Viki Nellas, ecnmists at the Eurpean University Institute, Blgna University and the Italian central bank. They lked at pharmacies(药房) and specifically at custmers wh may be particularly easy t rip ff: new parents.
Using data fr 2007 t 2010 cvering abut a fifth f pharmacies in Italy, the researchers measured the way in which prices f hygiene prducts fr babies changed as the number f babies varied. They tk advantage f a peculiar law frm the 1960s, accrding t which regins with at mst 7,500 peple are allwed just ne pharmacy (suppsedly t keep the quality f services high). They cmpared prices in places with ppulatins just belw this threshld, and just abve.
The prducts studied included sme 3,000 varieties f shamps, bath fams, baby wipes, creams and s n. Many are als used by adults n themselves. Sme peple, fr example, prefer sun-cream labeled “fr children” because f its high level f prtectin. When raising prices fr these prducts, even a pharmacist with a mnply(垄断) must cnsider the risk that adult users will switch t prducts that are nt aimed at children. But a rise in the number f babies, and hence buyers wh are parents, culd tip the scales twards price increases. By cntrast, the pharmacist shuld already be charging as much as parents are willing t pay fr prducts withut adult users, such as nappies.
The schlars fund that pharmacists raised prices when there were mre new parents----but nly in regins with a single pharmacy, and nt fr nappies. In mnply areas a dubling f the number f babies frm ne mnth t the next (nt unusual in a small ppulatin) cincided with a 5% increase in the price f the basket f baby-hygiene prducts.
The study is timely. Italy’s gvernment has started t lsen sme f the many restrictins that stp cmpetitin in the pharmacy sectr (thugh nt yet the ne that the researchers relied n). But such regulatins are plentiful in many ther lines f business, and nt just in Italy. The cnsumers wh pay the price are ften thse wh find it hardest t travel t shp arund----fr example, peple with crying babies n their hands.
1、What’s the purpse f the study?
A.T review the functin f the special law fr pharmacies.
B.T make clear the relatin between cmpetitin and prices.
C.T cllect the infrmatin n pharmacy business in Italy.
D.T gather the data n hygiene prducts fr babies in Italy.
2、“tip the scales” in Paragraph 3 means “_____”.
      A.Push the mveB.Keep the level
      C.Cntrl the riseD.Break the balance
3、The gvernment’s new measures will greatly benefit _____.
      A.pharmacy wnersB.lcal merchants
      C.new parentsD.adult users
22.(8分)Cigarette butts (烟蒂) are everywhere - clgging up ur streets, littering ur beaches - and fr decades they’ve been thught f as “unrecyclable”. But a New Jersey-based cmpany, called TerraCycle, has taken n the challenge, and has cme up with a way t recycle millins f cigarette butts and turn them int industrial plastic prducts. Its aim is t take items that peple nrmally cnsider impssible t recycle, and then use science t figure ut a way t d just that.
Despite the increase in anti-smking ads and messaging ver the past 20 years, glbal sales f cigarettes increased by 4 percent, and a whle lt f thse cigarette butts are ending up as trash, which can surely pllute the surrunding envirnment.
S hw d yu g abut turning all thse pisnus ends int smething useful? TerraCycle des this by first breaking them dwn int separate parts. They mix the remaining materials, such as the tbacc and the paper, with ther kinds f rubbish, and use it n nn-agricultural land, such as glf curses. The filters (过滤嘴) are a little harder. T recycle these, TerraCycle first makes them clean and cuts them int small pieces, and then cmbines them with ther recycled materials, making them int liquid fr industrial plastic prducts.
They nw have mre than 3,000 cigarette recycling bins in nine cuntries arund the wrld. They’re als expanding their recycling fferings t the rest f the 40 percent f husehld waste that currently can’t be recycled, such as chclate packaging, pens, and mbile phnes. The gal is t use the latest research t find a way t stp s much waste ending up in. landfill (垃圾填埋), and then get cmpanies t fund the prcess. And s far, it’s wrking.
“We haven’t fund anything that we can’t recycle,” cmmunicatins directr f Terra Cycle, Albe Zakes, said. “But with the amunt and variety f packaging and litter in the wrld, we are always lking fr new waste streams t address.”

D.the public shuld be aware f the envirnmental pllutin.
23.(8分) Bth hneybees and ants are scial insects that live in grups called clnies. They survive by means f their cllective intelligence. Their decisin-making pwer is distributed thrughut the grup; that is, n ne ant r bee makes decisins fr the grup. Instead, they wrk tgether. As Debrah M. Grdn, a bilgist f Stanfrd University, says, “Ants aren’t smart. Ant clnies are.” The same is true fr bee clnies. Althugh bees and ants are quite different physically, they have a lt in cmmn in terms f their behavir. Specifically, hneybees and ants have similar rles within the clny, bth have cmmunicatin systems, and bth have the capacity f learning.
Ants cmmunicate by using chemicals called phermnes, which can alert thers t danger r t a fd surce. Fr example, when wrker ants find a prmising surce, they let the rest f clny knw hw t find it by leaving a trail f phermnes n the way back t the clny. The ther ants pick up the message using their sense f smell. Bees, n the ther hand, use mvement t cmmunicate with each ther. Wrker bees send message t each ther by means f a “dance”. Different speeds and mvements send different messages. Fr example, when wrker bees called scuts g ut t find a new he fr the clny, they return and d a dance fr the ther wrker bees that indicates the lcatin f the new hme and hw suitable it is. The faster the scuts dance the better the new lcatin is.
Hneybees and ants are bth capable f learning. One Chinese study fund that bees can be trained t learn and remember a rute t a fd surce. The researchers als fund that bees can be taught t recgnize hidden bjects and use the cncepts f “sameness” and “difference” t accmplish certain tasks. Ants take this ne step further. Recent America research has shwn that ants nt nly have the ability t learn, but als can teach their fraging skills t ther yunger ants. They bserved that lder ants accmpany yung ants in search f fd and teach them the rute and hw t avid bstacles.
As we can see, the scial behavir f hneybees and ants is quite similar. Bth crdinate cmplex actins and accmplish crucial survival tasks by cperating in grups cnsisting f many individuals. Unintelligent as they may be as individuals, as grups they ften shw amazing brilliance as they g abut their everyday activities.

      B.The quality f a new clny lcatin.
      C.The discvery f a new fd surce.
      D.The directin t a ptential fd surce.
3、In paragraph 3, hw dcs the authr demnstrate the idea that Hneybees and ants are bth capable f learning?

This psychlgical and bilgical cnnectin creates an interesting cnnectin between what is unsafe and what humans enjy.
Getting in a car each day is a risk. Getting ut f bed is a risk, t. We need t take risks s that we can cmplete many things. Astrnauts take risks when they get inside a rcket; hwever, the things they achieve are great. Businessmen take a risk when they buy parts f a cmpany, hwever, withut ding that, they culd nt make mre mney.
We need t take risks s that we can gain smething. It is impssible t mve frward in life, earn mney, enjy a relatinship, play a sprt, r ding anything else withut taking a risk. It is all part f the game. It's ne f the mst imprtant parts f life.

25.(10分)One evening, authr Neil’s sn was angry. Neil had said ne f thse things that parents say, like “isn’t it time yu were in bed.” His sn lked up at him, angry and said, “I wish I didn’t have a dad! I wish I had … a gldfish!” That cnversatin gave birth t Neil’s bk, “The Day I Swapped My Dad fr Tw Gldfish”. The bk is a funny adventure f a sn searching fr the dad he swapped.
Whether they realize it r nt, fathers play an imprtant rle in their children’s develpment. Rland Warren, Directr f the Natinal Fatherhd Initiative, says that, “The shape f their dads has a rle in the kids’ sul.” I agree. We live in the best f times and the wrst f times fr fatherhd. We live in the best f times because fathers wh are engaged in their child’s life spend mre time than fathers f any previus generatin. We live in the wrst f times because there are still millins f children wh cntinue t miss the regular presence f Dad.
What difference des a dad make? Are they really that imprtant? Fr the mst part, studies have prved clearly that fathers, whether they live with their children r nt, matter in the lives f their children. When fathers are present, they prvide ecnmic supprt fr their children and caregiving respnsibilities. Well-fathered children are shwn t be mre emtinally intelligent and scially successful as adults. When fathers are absent, their absence may negatively influence children’s academic achievement, general behaviural adjustment and anger management, especially in males.
Yet just being physically present isn’t enugh t be a great father. It is imprtant that a dad be warm and emtinally available t his child. Authr and researcher, Jhn Gttman, describes this kind f father as an “emtin caching father”. Emtin caches are parents wh listen t their children’s feelings, see the sharing f feelings as an pprtunity fr intimacy(亲密). It is nt just the mere presence f fathers that matters, but hw they are present. Mst children lng fr and need a lving, devted and respnsible father.
1、The authr intrduces his tpic by ______.

      B.Lts f children’s fathers have t wrk every day.
C.Lts f children’s fathers are absent frm their lives.

      C.tries t change his child’s emtins D.is always available t his child
