Every man wants his sn t be smewhat f a clne, nt in features but in ftsteps. As he grws yu als age, and yur ambitins becme mre unachievable. Yu begin t realize that yur by, in yur ftsteps, culd prbably accmplish what yu hped fr. But ftsteps can be muddied and they can g ff in different directins.
My sn Jdy has hated schl since day ne in kindergarten. Science prjects waited until the last mment. Bk reprts weren’t written until the final threat.
I’ve been a newspaperman all my adult life. My daughter is a university graduate wrking tward her master’s degree in English. But Jdy? When he entered the tenth grade he became a “v-tech” student(技校学生). They’re called “mtrheads” by the rest f the student bdy.
When a secretary in my ffice first called him “mtrhead”, I was shcked. “Hey, he’s a gd kid,” I wanted t say. “And smart, really.”
I learned later that mtrheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty wrk clthes. And they dn’t ften make schl hnr rlls(光荣榜).
But being the parent f a mtrhead is itself an experience in educatin. We wh labr in clean shirts in ffices dn’t have the abilities that mtrheads have. I began t learn this when I had my car crashed. The cst t repair it was estimated at $800. “Hey, I can fix it,” said Jdy. I dubted it , but let him g ahead, fr I had nthing t lse.
My sn ,with ther mtrheads, fixed the car. They gt parts(零件)frm ajunkyard, and ability frm v-tech classes. The lst was $25 instead f $80.
Since that first repair jb, a brken air-cnditiner, a nn-functining washer and a nn-tasting taster have been fixed. Neighbrs and c-wrkers trust their car repairs t him.
These kids are happiest when ding repairs. They jke and laugh and are living in their wn relaxed wrld. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clthes.
I have learned a lt frm my mtrhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. Mst imprtant, I have learned that fathers dn’t need clnes in ftsteps r anywhere else.
My sn may never make the schl hnr rll. But he made mine.

Others say that the ppsite is true: internatinal cmpetitins encurage false natinal pride and lead t misunderstanding and hatred (憎恨). There is prbably sme truth in bth arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have dne little t supprt the view that sprt encurages internatinal brtherhd. Nt nly was there the tragic incident including the murder f athletes, but the Games were als ruined by incidents caused mainly by smaller natinal cntests.
One cuntry received its secnd-place medals with visible anger after the hckey final. There had been nisy scenes at the end f the hckey match, the lsers bjecting t the final decisins. They were sure that ne f their gals shuld nt have been disallwed and that their ppnents’ victry was unfair. Their manager was in great anger when he said, “This wasn’t hckey. Hckey and the Internatinal Hckey Federatin are finished.” The president f the Federatin said later that such behavir culd result in the suspensin (停赛) f the team fr at least three years.
Incidents f this kind will cntinue as lng as sprt is played cmpetitively rather than fr the lve f the game. The suggestin that athletes shuld cmpete as individuals, r in nn-natinal teams, might be t much t hpe fr. But in the present rganizatin f the Olympics there is far t much that encurages aggressive patritism (爱国主义).

23.(8分)Electric cars are dirty. In fact, nt nly are they dirty, they might even be mre dirty than their gasline-pwered cusins.
Peple in Califrnia lve t talk abut “zer-emissins(排放) vehicles”, but peple in Califrnia seem t be clueless abut where electricity cmes frm. Pwer plants mstly use fire t make it. Aside frm the new flks wh have their rfs cvered with slar cells, we get ur electricity frm generatrs(发电机). Generatrs are fueled by smething--usually cal, il, but als by heat generated in nuclear pwer plants. There are a few wind farms and gethermal plants as well, but by far we get electricity mainly by burning smething.
In ther wrds, thse "zer-emissins" cars are likely cal-burning cars. It’s just because the cal is burned smewhere else, it lks clean. It is nt. It's as if the Califrnia Greens are cvering their eyes—“If I can't see it, it's nt happening.” Gasline is an incredibly efficient way t pwer a vehicle; a galln f gas has a lt f energy in it. But when yu take that gas (r anther fuel) and first use it t make electricity, yu waste a nice part f that energy, mstly in the frm f wasted heat—at the generatr, thrugh the transmissin lines, etc.
A galln f gas may prpel yur car 25 miles. But the electricity yu get frm that galln f gas wn't get yu nearly as far—s electric cars burn mre fuel than gasline-pwered nes. If ur electricity came mstly frm nukes r gethermal, r hydr r wind r slar, then an electric car truly wuld be clean. But fr plitical, technical, and ecnmic reasns, we dn't use much f thse energy surces.
In additin, electric cars' batteries which are pisnus fr a lng time will eventually end up in a landfill. And finally, when cars are the plluters, the pllutin is spread acrss all the rads. When it's a pwer plant, thugh, all the junk is in ne place. Nature is very gd at cleaning up when things are t cncentrated, but it takes a lt lnger when all the garbage is in ne spt.
1、What des “clueless” mean in paragraph 2?

D.Gasline is an efficient way t pwer a vehicle.
3、The electricity we get frm a galln f gas may make ur car run ________.
A.nt less than 25 miles B.as far as 50 miles
C.as far as 25 miles D.nt mre than 25 miles
      4、Accrding t the text, electric cars ________.
      A.are mre envirnmentally friendly
B.burn mre fuel than gas-pwered nes
C.are very gd at cleaning up when things are nt t cncentrated
D.are pisnus fr a lng time and will eventually end up in a landfill
5、It can be inferred frm the text that ________.
A.being green is gd and shuld be encuraged in cmmunicatin
B.electric cars are nw the dminant vehicle cmpared with gasline-pwered cusins
C.zer-emissins vehicles shuld be chsen t prtect ur envirnment
D.electric cars are nt clean because we get electricity mainly by burning smething
