Even peple wh think they are sleeping enugh wuld prbably be better ff with mre rest.
The beginning f ur sleep-deficit (睡眠不足)crisis can be traced t the inventin f the light bulb a century ag. Frm diary entries and ther persnal accunts frm the 18th and 19th centuries, sleep scientists have reached the cnclusin that the average persn used t sleep abut 9. 5 hurs a night. "The best sleep habits nce were frced n us, when we had nthing t d in the evening dwn n the farm, and it was dark." By the 1950s and 1960s, that sleep schedule had been reduced dramatically, t between 7.5 and 8 hurs, and mst peple had t wake t an alarm clck. "Peple cheat n their sleep, and they dn't even realize they're ding it," says Dr David. "They think they're kay because they can get by n 6.5 hurs, when they really need 7.5, 8 r even mre t feel ideally energetic."
Perhaps the mst merciless rbber f sleep, researchers say, is the cmplexity f the day. When ever pressures frm wrk, family, friends and cmmunity munt, many peple cnsider sleep the least expensive item n his prgramme. "In ur sciety, yu're cnsidered dynamic if yu say yu nly need 5.5 hurs' sleep. If yu've gt t get 8.5 hurs, peple think yu lack drive and ambitin."
T determine the cnsequences f sleep deficit, researchers have put subjects thrugh a set f psychlgical and perfrmance tests requiring them, fr instance, t add clumns f numbers r recall a passage read t them nly minutes earlier. Sme middle-aged children are s annyed by the demands f their parents that they make such cmments as “Why dn’t the ld fls die?”
