22.(8分)Happy Birthday t Me (and My Mm)
Frty-three years ag my mther went int labur fr the secnd time. It was either very late New Year’s Day r very early n the secnd day f 1969 depending n hw yu lked at it but either way, it was a full week past her due date when my mm wke up knwing it was time t wake my dad up, get dressed, pack up the car and head t the hspital. Her regular dctr was n vacatin and when they reached the hspital they planned t deliver in were tld that the dctr was n his way t anther hspital s they shuld head there, in a neighburing city. Mst surprising t me nw is that she felt well enugh t attend a New Year’s party the previus night and stayed lng enugh t tast in the new year!
My mm and her family had immigrated t the United States just twenty years earlier frm El Salvadr. And that was a lucky thing fr me. Nt nly did my mm gain access t a better educatin and career ptins here in the US fr herself, each f her three daughters wuld als enjy her access t quality maternity (孕产妇的) care. While the US is hardly the wrld leader in maternal health r birth utcmes, these days a wman faces a 1 in 2,100 risk f dying during her life and in El Salvadr, it’s 1 in 350-6 times wrse. In 1969, that difference was even greater.
Hwever, I was pregnant with my secnd child in El Salvadr six years ag when I realized hw very different my life might have turned ut if I’d lived there when I delivered my first child. I travelled dwn there with CARE, the humanitarian relief rganizatin, whse effrts my mm had lng supprted, t see sme f their principal prgrammes in actin. Amng them was ne in particular that remains with me tday. It was a water prject where pregnant wmen, many f whm had walked miles t access this clean water, receive sme basic care befre r after childbirth. Here these wmen were, facing the exact same physical challenges as me but still carrying the full wrk lad f the family and with little t n resurces fr infrmatin, care, transprtatin r cmfrt during r after their pregnancies.
By this time, I was all t aware f what a challenge childbirth culd be. After delivering my daughter in 2003, I survived a hemrrhage (大出血), the leading childbirth-related cmplicatin that takes the lives f thusands f ther mthers all ver the wrld. One girl r wman dies every 90 secnds in pregnancy r childbirth frm what is in mst cases a preventable death. I was as shcked as yu are when I discvered this fact but I was als grateful. Grateful because I had been in the care f a team f health wrkers when I needed them mst.
I thught f my mther’s life. While she had been brn in a gd hspital in San Salvadr in the 1930’s, at that time pregnancy-related deaths were cmmn even in the US. My great grandmther als hemrrhaged, nly after delivering her fifth child and she died. Her husband, my mm’s grandfather was a physician at the time. He wuld give up practising medicine frever when he culdn’t save her.
But it wasn’t nly my mm and her family that I thught f as I cnsidered my wn fate and gd frtune, it was all thse wmen I’d spent the day with in the rural cmmunity I’d visited with CARE. We’d made a cnnectin that day, we mthers, as wmen. These wmen did nt have access t the simple interventins (介入) that culd insure their survival and that’s what cncerned me. It did mre than cncern me, it wke me up and begged this questin, why shuld any ne life be f different value than any ther?
And s, I made the cmmitment right there and then t d all I culd t imprve maternal health and reduce the number f maternal deaths arund the glbe.

23.(8分) The palm - frward (掌心向外) "V" sign, frmed by raising and spreading the wrist tw fingers, has three different meanings in American culture.
The mst ppular meaning f the "V" sign was invented in 1941 by a Belgian, Victr De Lavalaye. Wanting a symbl fr resistance t the Nazi ccupatin, he came up with the single letter "V", which std nt nly fr his wn first name, but als fr English victry, Flemish virijheid, and French victire. The symblism f the sign spread very quickly, and Winstn Churchill used it cnstantly in public appearance. Thus thrughut the 1940s and 1950s, the gesture meant simply" victry " .
The secnd meaning came in the 1960s. Because f its military implicatin, American antiwar prtestrs used the sign sarcastically (讽刺地) against the arms, s that it became knwn as the "peace sign". In the 1970s, the "W' sign, which had lst its military implicatin, was a cmmn greeting amng freedm lvers , acid heads, plitical radicals, and ultimately, yung peple in general. S by abut the middle f the 1970s, it n lnger gave clue t the user's philsphy.
The third meaning is the ldest and least cmmn. American children jkingly put " V" , which resembles "hrns", behind friends-heads in grup snapsht. They are unknwingly reprducing smething that suthern Eurpeans wuld find highly ffensive. This mischief, called "hrns f the Devil", is a variant f the Eurpean "hrns" gesture, which is bscene (猥亵的). Here the "w' sign means "Yur wife has been cheating n yu r, when placed behind anther's head, his wife has been cheating n him. "
In the United States, the gesture is typically given with the palm facing the viewer. The British use bth this versin and an lder, palm - backward versin ; the latter is bscene in American culture, and crrespnds t the American "finger". Churchill gt sme surprised stares in 1941 when, evidently unaware f the mean usage, he gave the palm - backward "V" t British trps. In England tday yu culd have t be a scial hermit nt t understand the distinctin. Astnishingly, hwever, Margaret Thatcher repeated Churchill's errr after her victry in the 1979 electin.

25.(10分)Owls are equipped with highly develped stealth technlgy (隐形技术) that helps them charge twards prey—an animal hunted and eaten by anther—undetected, a study has shwn.
Owls have flight feathers that absrb aerdynamic sund and cntrl the vibratins (振动) that ccur when a bird beats its wings. The result is perfect silence as it appraches a muse r ther prey.
Scientists used lasers and high-speed cameras t analyze and cmpare lng-eared wl, eagle and pigen feathers during flight. While differing in size, all three birds have a similar wing-beat style.
Prfessr Jinkui Chu led the research. He said, “Many wls have a unique and fascinating ability t fly s silently that they are ut f their prey's hearing range, due t their feather structure.”
This behaviur has lng been f interest t engineers, as we seek t apply the wls' nise-reductin mechanisms (机制) t ther purpses and situatins that benefit sciety.
Nw, hwever, we knw the wls' silent flight ability is even better than we thught. Of all birds the wl is the king f acustic stealth. It nt nly manages t prevent aerdynamic nise when gliding, but als mechanical nise caused by vibratin during flying.
This is remarkable, cnsidering the sudden jumping, bending and twisting the wings are subjected t when flapping and the nise that is created by ther birds.
In the scientific wrld, the prcess used t remve this mechanical nise is called ‘damping’, which means the remval f mechanical energy frm a vibrating system usually by changing it int heat and allwing it t remain steady.
“Our research shwed the lng-eared wl has superir damping skill, meaning it can remain amazingly stable and remve mechanical nise caused by the mvement f its feathers — quite an impressive achievement f engineering.99
He added, “This study will hpefully prvide further insight int the wls' silent flight mechanism and help engineers develp ideas fr special materials r structures, such as n-shre wind turbines, where similar nise remval can be applied.”
1、What can be true abut wls accrding t the text?
A.They are active during the day. B.They attract much attentin frm engineers.
