21.(6分) Smetimes just when we need the pwer f miracles t change ur beliefs, they materialize in the places we’d least expect. They can cme t us as a great change in ur physical reality r as a simple cincidence in ur lives. Smetimes they’re big and can’t be missed. Other times they’re s subtle that if we aren’t aware, we may miss them altgether. They can cme frm the lips f a stranger we suddenly and mysteriusly meet at just the right instant. If we listen carefully, we’ll always hear the right wrds, at the right time, t dazzle (目眩) us int a realizatin f smething that we may have failed t ntice nly mments befre.
On a cld January afternn in 1989, I was hiking up the trail that leads t the tp f Egypt’s Mt. Hreb. I’d spent the day at St. Catherine’s Mnastery and wanted t get t the peak by sunset t see the valley belw. As I was winding up the narrw path, I’d ccasinally see ther hikers wh were cming dwn frm a day n the muntain. While they wuld generally pass with simply a nd r a greeting in anther language, there was ne man that day wh did neither.
I saw him cming frm the last switchback n the trail that led t the backside f the muntain. As he gt clser, I culd see that he was dressed differently frm the ther hikers I’d seen. Rather than the high-tech fabrics and styles that had been the nrm, this man was wearing traditinal Egyptian clthing. He wre a tattered, rust-clred galabia and bviusly ld and thick-sled sandals that were cvered in dust. What made his appearance s dd, thugh, was that the man didn’t even appear t be Egyptian! He was a small-framed Asian man, had very little hair, and was wearing rund, wire-rimmed glasses.
As we neared ne anther, I was the first t speak, “Hell,” I said, stpping n the trail fr a mment t catch my breath. Nt a sund came frm the man as he walked clser. I thught that maybe he hadn’t heard me r the wind had carried my vice away frm him in anther directin. Suddenly he stpped directly in frnt f me n the high side f the trail, lked up frm the grund, and spke a single sentence t me in English, “Smetimes yu dn’t knw what yu have lst until yu’ve lst it.” As I tk in what I had just heard, he simply stepped arund me and cntinued his ging dwn the trail.
That mment in my life was a small miracle. The reasn is less abut what the man said and mre abut the timing and the cntext. The year was 1989, and the Cld War was drawing t a clse. what the man n the trail culdn’t have knwn is that it was during my Egyptian pilgrimage (朝圣), and specifically during my hike t the tp f Mses’s muntain, that I’d set the time aside t make decisins that wuld affect my career in the defense industry, my friends, my family, and, ultimately, my life.
I had t ask myself what the chances were f an Asian man dressed in an Egyptian galabia cming dwn frm the tp f this histric muntain just when I was walking up, stpping befre me, and ffering his wisdm, seemingly frm ut f nwhere. My answer t my wn questin was easy: the dds were slim t nne! In a meet that lasted less than tw minutes n a muntain halfway arund the wrld frm my hme, a ttal stranger had brught clarity and the hint f a warning, regarding the huge changes that I wuld make within a matter f days. In my way f thinking, that’s a miracle.
I suspect that we all experience small miracles in ur lives every day. Smetimes we have the wisdm and the curage t recgnize them fr what they are In the mments when we dn’t, that’s kay as well. It seems that ur miracles have a way f cming back t us again and again. And each time they d, they becme a little less subtle, until we can’t pssibly miss the message that they bring t ur lives!
The key is that they’re everywhere and ccur every day fr different reasns, in respnse t the different needs that we may have in the mment. Our jb may be less abut questining the extrardinary things that happen in ur daily lives and mre abut accepting the gifts they bring.

23.(8分)As PhD research ges, Brian Wisenden might be envied: watching baby fish swimming swiftly thrugh the clear waters in the Csta Rican trpical dry frest. By recrding their grwth and numbers, he hped t lk at their risks f being eaten. Instead, he witnessed smething strange. Many grups were increasing in numbers. In these grups, sme were smaller than thers, suggesting they weren’t siblings (兄弟姐妹). Wisenden had accidentally discvered that the fish, called cnvict cichlids, adpt each ther’s babies. Why wuld they d that, he wndered?
In the human wrld, we think f adptin as a selfless act. But in nature, its presence is puzzling. Taking n the burden f bringing up babies with n genetic link wuld seem t reduce an animal’s chance f survival r at least prvide n gain. Yet, adptin is surprisingly cmmn in the natural wrld.
Take the eastern grey kangar. Between 2008 and 2013, Wisenden fllwed the fates f 326 baby kangars in the Wilsns Prmntry Natinal Park in Victria and recrded 11 cases f puch (育儿袋) swapping. The circumstances behind sme f these adptins aren’t knwn, but fur were straight swaps and anther fur ccurred after a mther had lst her wn baby. Hw cme? Befre independence, baby kangars g thrugh a perid inside and utside their mthers puch. Fllwing ut-f-puch attempts, mthers nrmally sniff their yung befre allwing them back in, but Wisendens team suspect that during an emergency they may mit the sniff test, allwing a weak baby t quickly climb in befre fleeing frm danger.
Sme f nature’s adptins are, actually, driven by yung. In burrwer bugs (土蝽), fr example, females lay a nest f eggs clse t thse f unrelated bugs. Mther bugs tend their develping eggs befre they hatch, and then feed 出fir babies nuts frm weedy mint plants. Finding nuts is a cmpetitive business,s nt every mther bug gets her fair share. And if the delivery rate isn’t up t standard, clever yung may abandn their mthers t jin a better-fed grup.
The cnsequences f adptin fllwing mistaken identity can be hrrible. The true babies f adpting mthers were abandned. Bui it can have remarkable benefits, nt just fr adptees but als fr adptive parents.

      A.Cnfirm. B.Repeat.
      C.Adpt. D.Skip.
3、Why wuld sme burrwer hugs abandn their mthers?
A.T live in warmer nests. B.T reprduce.
C.T seek fr better parenting. D.T adapt t cmpetitin earlier.
4、What may the authr mst prbably talk abut next?
A.The causes f accidental adptin. B.The prcesses f accidental adptin.
C.The drawbacks f accidental adptin. D.The advantages f accidental adptin.
24.(8分)LONDON (Reuters)——Organic fruit, delivered right t the drstep. That is what Gabriel Gld prefers, and he is willing t pay fr it. If this is nt pssible, the 26-year-ld cmputer technician will spend the extra mney at the supermarket t buy rganic fd.

25.(10分) Musicians are said t have better language skills and scientific studies have backed that up. But it’s nt clear why that might be the case.
Nw, a study f 74 Chinese kindergarteners suggests six mnths f pian lessns can heighten the brain’s respnse t changes in pitch (声调). And kids wh gt pian lessns were als better at telling apart tw similar-sunding Mandarin (普通话) wrds, which cntained different cnsnants (辅音), than were students wh gt extra reading training r wh went thrugh regular kindergarten.
Mandarin is a tnal language — the famus example is the wrd ma which can mean mther r hrse depending n its pitch. S might musical training translate better t Mandarin than it wuld t English?
Yeah, it’s pssible that this influenced the results, said Rbert Desimne, a neurscientist (神经科学家) at the McGvern Institute at MIT. But he says ther studies d back up the fact that music lessns benefit language learners, even in cuntries withut tnal languages. “And what ur study added n tp f that was sme idea f the neural basis fr thse benefits.”
And if yu dn’t wn a pian, dn’t despair. The reading grup actually did just as well n many measures as the pian grup. “Reading’s pretty gd actually. We dn’t mean t disvalue reading instructin.”
Mre imprtant, he says, was t shw pian wasn’t actually wrse than reading fr these kills... thus perhaps encuraging cash-strapped schls t bring their music prgrams alive.
