23.(8分) I thught we all knew why independent schl students d better than thse in the state sectr(公立学校). They have mre mney, mre funding and better resurces and they dn’t have the mre challenging students we get in the state sectr.
That was befre I became a teacher-researcher in a tw-year prject led by my cllege, aiming t find the best way t supprt high-ability students. With funding frm the Lndn Schls Excellence Fund, we teamed up with sme f the cuntry’s tp private schls, like Etn and St Paul’s, as well as a number f state schls, t find ut hw t bring the knwledge-rich learning that characterizes independent schls int the state sectr.
Befre the prject, I hadn’t had much cntact with peple wh had been educated there. But the first thing I fund when I visited was that teachers are the same. In the independent sectr, they have challenges t—just different nes.
After tw years, ur research prject has prduced a huge set f findings.
One f the mst useful findings was the imprtance f independent learning habits utside the classrm. I realized that althugh I was always telling students that they needed t d fur t five hurs f private study a week, they didn’t have a clear idea f what this culd lk like beynd making ntes. S I set them different activities including reading articles, ding activities and cmpleting examinatin questins.
I started t put much mre emphasis n activities utside the classrm, like researching tpics beynd the syllabus(教学大纲) r discussing things in the news. And I praised anyne wh asked questins in class, s we created a culture where students were prud t ask a questin rather than seeing it as a way f flagging up the fact that they hadn’t understd smething.
My research is beginning t have a real influence. My students nw cme t class and tell me what they want t knw abut. But they n lnger expect me t d the research—they want t find ut fr themselves. At the end f the year I gave students a questinnaire n independent learning. One wrte, “Independent learning wuld limit the help I gt frm ther students. It helps yu t think fr yurself.”

C.T partner with ther schls in educatin.
D.T find enugh funds fr state schls.
3、What changes did the authr make in her classes?
A.She fcused n grup learning.B.She wrked ut a different syllabus.
C.She encuraged independent learning.D.She carried ut varius activities in class.
4、Hw is the authr’s research ging?
A.It has made a big difference.B.It has failed t make prgress.
C.It is questined by her students.D.It invlves many mre students.
24.(8分) In December, after her third fall in a few mnths, Dris Carpenter was admitted t Rchdale infirmary(养老院). Carpenter, 84, lives alne, but she is increasingly unsteady n her feet, and if she falls, she hasn’t the strength t get up again. Previusly, a call t 111 wuld call nursing staff wh culd put her back int a chair, but it was increasingly clear she wasn’t cping, and needed mre supprt.
This isn’t like any ld hspital, hwever. Tday Carpenter isn’t in bed but sitting in a chair, dressed in her wn clthes, a fat Dan Brwn bk in frnt f her. “Yu dn’t feel like yu’re in hspital,” she says.
Tw side rms have been furnished with small grups f tables and chairs, with bright tableclths. Thse patients wh are able can help themselves t fd at mealtimes and sit with thers t eat, r g t the library t select anther page-turner. A physitherapist helps Carpenter with her painful back, and is wrking t help imprve her cnfidence n stairs.
Previusly, an elderly persn in Carpenter’s cnditin wuld mst likely have ended up in an acute hspital ward(病房).
There, very frequently, peple f her age wuld get stuck, and many wuld g dwnhill fast.
“They cme int hspital, and ur mdel in the NHS is t put them t bed,” says Steve Taylr, the divisinal directr fr cmmunity services. “Put yur pyjamas n, yu stay in that bed, we will feed yu and tilet yu.”
Shckingly quickly, he says, patients can lse what abilities they previusly had. “And then, when it cmes time t discharge yu, yu can n lnger walk.”
This is prbably the biggest challenge facing the NHS – the prblem f an lder ppulatin, the lng years f illness that many f us will face and a fragile scial care system underpinning it all.

      A.Lnely.B.Desperate.
      C.Relaxed.D.Curius.
3、In which sectin f a newspaper can yu find this text?
      A.Sciety.B.Technlgy.
      C.Family.D.Medicine.
