Like many f my generatin, I have a weakness fr her wrship(崇拜). At sme pint, hwever, we all begin t questin ur heres and ur need fr them. This leads us t ask: What is a her?
Despite great differences in cultures, heres arund the wrld generally share a number f characteristics that instruct and inspire peple.
A her des smething wrth talking abut. A her has a stry f adventure t tell and a grup f peple wh will listen. But a her ges beynd mere fame(名声).
Heres serve pwers r principles larger than themselves. A sure test fr wuld-be heres is: what r whm d they serve? What are they willing t live and die fr? If the answer r evidence suggests they serve nly their wn fame, they may be famus persns but nt heres. Madnna and Michael Jacksn are famus, but wh wuld say that their fans find life mre abundant?
Heres are catalysts(催化剂) fr change, they have a visin frm the muntain tp. They have the skill and the charm t mve the masses. They create new pssibilities. Prnuncing a language is a skill. Every nrmal persn is expert in the skill f prnuncing his wn language; but few peple are even reasnably prficient at prnuncing freign languages. Nw there are many reasns fr this. But I suggest that the fundamental reasn why peple in general d nt speak freign languages very much better than they d is that they fail t grasp the true nature f the prblem f learning t prnunce, and cnsequently never set abut undertaking it in the right way. Far t many peple fail t realize that prnuncing a freign language is a skill—ne that needs careful training f a special kind, and ne that cannt be acquired by just leaving it t take care f itself. I think even teachers f language, while recgnizing the imprtance f a gd accent, tend t ignre the branch f study cncerned with speaking the language in their practical teaching. S English prnunciatin must be taught; the teacher shuld be prepared t devte sme f the lessn time t this, and get the student t feel that here is a matter wrthy f receiving his clse attentin.
It is imprtant that the teacher shuld be in pssessin f the necessary infrmatin. This can generally be btained frm bks. It is pssible t get frm bks sme idea f the mechanics f speech, and f what we call general phnetic thery. But it des nt fllw that yu can teach prnunciatin successfully as sn as yu have read the necessary bks. It depends after that what use yu make f yur knwledge; and this is a matter f technique.
      59. Many peple d nt speak freign languages well because they ________.

When we talk abut breaking recrds in the Olympic Games, we came acrss the issue f perfrmance-imprving drugs. These drugs are riginally develped t help peple with illnesses, but in the wrng hands, they create supreme athletes making them faster and strnger than is nrmal fr human beings. Taking these drugs is knwn as “dping” and althugh they imprve perfrmance, they als cause serius health prblems in later life fr thse wh abuse them.
The sprts wrld des nt tlerate dping as it is a fundamental frm f cheating. Ben Jhnsn wuld still be the 100 metres wrld recrd hlder if he had nt been caught taking drugs in the 1988 Olympics. Other recrds remain dubtful, like Flrence Griffith’s 100 metres recrd back in 1988. Did she take drugs?
Dping is nt nly a prblem in athletes, it is part f every sprt when athletes seek t achieve beynd their natural limits and are prepared t cheat t d s. In 2006 cycling fans wrldwide were shcked when the winner f the annual cycling race, the Tur de France, was caught dping. Flyd Lands made several lame excuses blaming medicine he had been taking fr injury but these were all in vain. He failed tw drug tests.
Unfrtunately, it is nt easy t catch athletes using illegal drugs. It is cmpulsry fr winners t be tested but ther participants are nly tested at randm. New drugs are develped all the time and drug tests fr sprting events are ften ne step behind.
Hwever, dping is nt the nly thing we need t wrry abut. Unless we are careful, “gene-therapy(基因治疗)” will be the next big threat. Fr medical purpses, scientists have already fund ways t build muscle and increase strength by changing peple’s genes. Gene-therapy is very cntrversial and many peple ppse further research int it. If gene-therapy were used nw, it wuld be almst impssible t find ut. In the future, athletes wh have their genes changed might be able t d the 100 metres dash in just 8 secnds r the marathn in less than tw hurs.
In tday’s wrld, winners are celebrated and treated as heres, but if dping and gene-therapy cntinue t affect the utcmes f majr sprting events, the wrd “her” will have lst all meaning.
      67. What is “dping”?
      A. It’s a frm f cheating in sprts.B. It’s a physical test given t athletes.
      C. It’s a new way t imprve athletes’ perfrmances.D. It’s a health prblem athletes have nw.
      68. Dping can d the fllwing BUT _______.
      A. help peple with illnessesB. help athletes build muscles
      C. cause serius health prblemsD. make athletes perfrm better
      69. Which f the fllwing statements is true abut “gene-therapy”?
      A. Gene-therapy has caused serius prblems in the sprting wrld.
      B. Gene-therapy will bring abut mre “sprts heres” in the future.
      C. Gene-therapy is ppsed by all peple because f its bad effects.
      D. Gene-therapy is riginally develped fr medical purpses.
      70. What’s the general idea f the whle passage?
      A. It’s hard t catch athletes dping because drug tests are very slw.
      B. Dping is a huge prblem in the sprting wrld that can never be slved.

But this is perhaps nt true in sme ther cuntries. There it may be cnsidered flish t make an appintment t far in advance because plans which are made fr a date mre than a week away tend t be frgtten.
The meanings f time differ in different parts f the wrld. Thus, misunderstandings arise between peple frm cultures that treat time differently. Prmptness is valued highly in American life. Fr example, n ne wuld think f keeping a business assciate waiting fr an hur. It wuld be t implite. When equals(同辈) meet, a persn wh is five minutes late is expected t make a shrt aplgy. If he is less than five minutes late, he will say a few wrds f explanatin, thugh perhaps he will nt cmplete the sentence.
In the western wrld, particularly in the United States, peple tend t think f time as smething fixed in nature, smething frm which ne cannt escape. As a rule, Americans think f time as a rad stretching int the future, alng which ne prgresses. The rad has many sectins which are t be kept separate—“ne thing at a time”. Peple wh cannt plan events are nt highly regarded. The American idea f the future is limited, hwever. It is the freseeable future, nt the future f the Suth Asian, which may invlve centuries. Smene has said f the Suth Asian idea f time. “Time is like a museum with endless halls and rms. Yu, the viewer, are walking thrugh the museum in the dark, hlding a light t each scene as yu pass it. Gd is in charge f the museum, and nly he knws all that is in it. One lifetime represents ne rm.”
Since time has such different meanings in different cultures, cmmunicatin is ften difficult. We will understand each ther a little better if we can keep this fact in mind.

The tpic f my speech tday is “Being a gd partner”.
In this busy, mdern wrld, if we want t cmplete ur wrk mre efficiently, we must all learn t cperate with thers. Cperatin can save us a lt f time and energy. Additinally, we can learn much frm each ther.
We’ll be lucky enugh t find smene we like t cperate with. We will feel very happy because we can share ur jy and sadness with him. Hwever, it can be difficult t cperate with smene we dislike. In this case, we’ll have t learn t put up with sme f his shrtcmings and try t discver his advantages. Perhaps after wrking tgether fr sme time we’ll find that he is nt s difficult t get alng with.
Hw can we becme a gd partner? In my pinin, firstly, we shuld try t listen t thers’ pinins. If he makes mistakes, try t pint them ut in a plite way. Last but nt least, never frce ur ideas n thers.
      Thank yu fr yur listening!
