Lking fr a way t cut back n hw ften I had t water my cntainer garden, I tried self-watering
cntainers and fund that I needed t water much less ften. Self-watering cntainers with big tmat r squash
      第 4页/共 12页
plants needed water every three r fur days, but yunger, smaller plants gt by with water nce a week. N plants
needed daily watering. These cntainers make it pssible fr the cntainer gardener t have a life beynd the
      garden.
I als gt a nice surprise: I fund that virtually all the vegetable plants I grw in my regular gardens grw at
least as well in self-watering cntainers. Sme grw better. Artichkes r eggplant can’t be cnventinally grwn
in my area due t the shrt grwing seasn where plants ften struggle t keep up with water need, but in a
self-watering cntainer, they grw quickly enugh.
It appears that water is the key. As lng as there is water in the reservir, the sil thrughut the cntainer is
always mist. In a traditinal cntainer, after watering, the sil — and the plants — have prgressively less water
available. Plants becme stressed whenever they have insufficient water, and self-watering cntainers eliminate (排
      除) that pssibility.
Mst self-watering cntainers are rectangular plastic nes, but there are als rund and hanging nes. They all
wrk, thugh sme inexpensive nes have reservirs t small t ffer any advantage ver traditinal cntainers.
The critical differences have t d with size: Hw much sil can it hld? Hw deep is the sil? Big plants need
big pts. Sil 8 inches deep satisfies mst plants, but carrts need 12 inches. Reservirs need t be big enugh t
allw at least three r fur days between waterings.
      4. What affects hw ften self-watering cntainers need t be watered?
      A. The size f the plants. B. The depth f the sil.
      C. The material f the cntainer. D. The clr f the cntainer.
      5. What’s the key advantage f self-watering cntainers?
      A. Shrtening the grwing cycle. B. Adapting the plant t dry cnditins.
      C. Remving the risk f dry sil. D. Changing traditinal planting ways.
      6. What can be learned abut chsing a self-watering cntainer?
      A. Sil type changes water strage. B. A lw-cst reservir wrks just fine.
      C. Rt vegetables need wider cntainers. D. The shape makes little difference in use.
      7. Where is the text mst likely taken frm?
      A. A prduct review website. B. A gardening tips clumn.
      C. A hme imprvement blg. D. A plant science textbk.
      C
Getting the mst ut f ging t galleries invlves mre than just shwing up. While a casual apprach — “I
      第 5页/共 12页
dn’t knw much abut art, but I knw what I like” — might satisfy sme, truly appreciating a painting requires a
      determinatin t g deeper.
Trust yur eyes. Art is made t be lked at. And when yur eyes decide whether they like smething r nt,
they are drawing n the experience f a lifetime. S trust yur eyes when they whisper their first impressins. Why
d s many peple lve Van Ggh’s Sunflwers? The mment yu see them, they feel uplifting, jyus, and
      instantly pleasurable.
Yur eyes may be the mst imprtant rgan fr lking at art, but the heart runs them a clse secnd. When
we lk at a painting, we get smebdy’s message sent t us. Take Daughters Chasing a Butterfly by Thmas
Gainsbrugh fr example. The first thing t feel is the artist’s lve fr his little girls. T my eyes, it’s entirely
unmissable. The tw girls, their faces recrded with s much insider skills, are chasing a butterfly, which has
landed n a prickly (有刺的) plant. When they try t grab it, they might get hurt. S a lving daddy hasn’t just
painted his lve fr his daughters. He has als painted his fears fr them.
If yu judge art by yur wn level f cmpetence r understanding, yu’re lking at art thrugh a blindfld.
Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire serves as an example: a seemingly simple sunset hides rich symblic meanings.
Its intense visual brilliance hlds deeper messages visible nly t thse wh rise abve a narrw persnal view.
Instead f limiting yur appreciatin t what yu like, expand it t include what many thers have liked befre yu.
Like all life’s prfund pleasures, lking at art is a cmplex business. Mre accurately, it’s a pleasure with
many layers and stages. But fr the experienced art lver, the real jy is in the build-up, the delicius jurney, the
      awesme pay-ff.
      8. What are viewers advised t d first in lking at art?
      A. G ver the histry f art. B. Draw n artists’ experience.
      C. Cmpare with ther artwrk. D. Rely n initial visual impressins.
      9. Why is Gainsbrugh’s painting mentined in paragraph 3?
      A. T shw that lve is ppular in family-themed paintings.
      B. T indicate that viewing art invlves heart-t-heart cnnectin.
      C. T illustrate that viewers are easily struck by the skills f artists.
      D. T prve that art serves as a visual recrd f an artist’s persnal life.
      10. What des the underlined wrd “blindfld” prbably mean?
      A. A way t limit ne’s view. B. A tl t prtect ne’s eyes.
      C. A methd t judge art bjectively. D. A means t imprve ne’s taste.
      第 6页/共 12页
      11. What is the text mainly abut?
      A. Hw t better engage with art. B. Hw t read artists’ emtin.
      C. Hw t better evaluate visual arts. D. Hw t analyze famus paintings.
      D
A watched pt never bils, but time has wings when yu’re having fun. The familiar saying has a basis in
slid science — ur sense f time des expand and cntract depending n the way we experience the wrld. Even
delicate visual features can affect hw we perceive (感知) time. New research shws mre memrable images
      seem t last lnger.
Martin Wiener, head f the research, says the finding reveals hw the brain’s time-bending strategy allws it
t prcess and remember mre infrmatin. While what is actually happening in the brain when time seems t
expand remains unclear, scientists suspect it may have smething t d with helping the brain prcess mre
      infrmatin in limited time.
This is especially relevant t the brain’s visual system which, expsed t infrmatin verlad, has t rank in
rder f imprtance, allwing fr limited resurces. Recent research has shwn sme images are mre naturally
      memrable than thers.
T understand hw this memrability f an image might relate t ur subjective sense f time, Wiener and his
clleagues cnducted related experiments. The researchers fund larger scene sizes seemed t extend time while
mre disrderly scenes seemed t reduce the perceived duratin. Besides, the subjects perceived that mre
memrable images remained n the screen lnger, even if they were all presented fr the same amunt f time. T
find the underlying factr, the team fed the same memrability-ranked images t a neural (神 经 的 ) netwrk
mdeled after the brain’s visual system and fund mre memrable images were prcessed faster.
Why des faster brain prcessing make time feel slwer? The answer is simple: When ur brain prcesses
things faster, it takes in mre infrmatin at the same time. Our brain can nly handle s much infrmatin at nce,
like a narrw pipe. When it needs t absrb mre infrmatin, it “widens” this pipe. As a result, time feels like it’s
stretching ut and mving mre slwly.
      12. What des the familiar saying “A watched pt never bils” illustrate?
      A. Actively waiting makes time feel slwer. B. Visual features are the key t judging time.
      C. Our activities d nt change time perceptin. D. Time perceptin relies mainly n emtinal state.
      13. Hw des the brain’s visual system handle infrmatin?
      A. By cmparing similar scenes. B. By srting randmly.
      第 7页/共 12页
      C. By screening ut cmplex images. D. By setting pririties.
      14. Accrding t the text, which f the images wuld seem t last lnger?
      A. B. C. D.
      15. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Hw Visual Features Affect Our Sense f Time
      B. New Ways t Imprve the Memrability f Images
      C. Why Time Slws Dwn fr Mre Memrable Visuals
      D. The Brain’s Secrets t Prcessing Cmplex Infrmatin

Fr mst f my life, I always treated taste as fixed. When I mved t Lndn, I threw myself int wrk while

wildly different life stries made me realize hw rarely I speak with ther generatins. We talked abut their past
careers, lcal news and new chess mves. Interestingly, I felt mre cnnected there than with peple f my age.
