Eleven students tk the summer curse taught by Brad Davis, a prfessr in the Cllege f Envirnment and Design at the University f Gergia, n the practices f drawing utdrs. As a prfessin, landscape architects ften bring t life their ideas f an utdr space thrugh cmputer pictures. The curse gives these future landscape architects the tls t bserve the details f a landscape and draw that scene by hand. “Students can end up prducing better cmputer images with sme hand instructin first because they knw the rules, and they knw hw t recgnize the key features f what they' re seeing,” Davis says.
The students gathered arund Davis t watch him paint with waterclrs. Step by step, Davis shwed them hw t apply thin cats f paint. Then he asked the students t paint by themselves. “Yu’re getting the smells and sunds, and the way the light changes. Clr, depth, size, and shape all cme int play as yu translate the landscape nt paper,” the third-year graduate student Matthew Gauldin said f the landscape. “It helps yu get mre f the detail yu'd miss if yu were drawing frm a picture. Out here, it's alive.”
Nearly tw weeks earlier, mst f these students had never tuched waterclr. Many had limited experience in drawing. Nw they're facing sunrise and better dealing with the challenge f its rapidly changing light.
“Befre this curse, I never imagined I culd paint with waterclrs, even at a basic level,” said JH Leigh, a fifth-year student. “In tw weeks, I’ve gne frm having n idea hw t apprach this t having a cmplete idea f hw t d it. I'm prud t have mastered waterclrs s quickly and created smething beautiful.”
The experience cntinued well beynd their drawing bards each day. They enjyed grup dinners featuring hmemade cakes and lcal beer, tk bird- watching trips, went fishing at the beach, and tk late-night drives t see muntain stars. Back n Driftwd Beach, as students packed up their drawing bards and gathered their paintings, they carried away mre than drawing skills.

In July 2023, Katey Lesneski went int the cean ff Key Larg t see the Hrseshe Reef, ne f the biggest and healthiest cral reefs (珊瑚礁) still in the area. Nrmally, she wears a wetsuit t prtect against the cld,but that day she didn't need ne —— the cean was unusually warm. Lking thrugh her mask at the ancient reef, she saw the crals had turned white and were falling apart. “The heatwaves increased water temperatures by mre than 2.5°C abve nrmal fr weeks, causing sme die-ffs. I was crying underwater int my mask,” said Lesneski, a scientist wh leads Flrida’s Missin Icnic Reefs prgram.
Flrida is lw-lying and near sea level, s hurricane flds can reach far inland, causing damage and death. The strng, rugh shape f cral reefs can reduce wave energy by as much as 97 percent. “Cral reefs create a strng buffer against incming waves. They cause waves t break ffshre instead f crashing nt shre near peple's hmes,” Wahl said. “If there weren't healthy crals cntinuusly grwing n the tp f these reefs, we wuld see greater damage during strms.”
Over the years, scientists have been trying t reduce reef lss by grwing baby crals and planting them nt reefs. But facing mre heatwaves and dead crals, scientists are making effrts t create new types f cral that can better deal with heat and disease. Cral researchers, wrking internatinally, are taking crals frm warmer waters near Hnduras and breeding(繁殖) them with Flrida crals. They hpe this will lead t strnger crals that can live thrugh mre stressful cnditins.
“If we dn't address climate change nw, we will nt have crals anymre,” Silverstein said. “These recvery effrts will give us a few mre decades f stability(稳定), but eventually we’re ging t reach a pint where the ceans are nt supprting this ecsystem anymre —— and we’re very near that pint.” Silverstein is nt ready t give up, saying, “It's been difficult, but t cntinue t d this wrk, we need t have cnfidence and cnsider hw t d this wrk better, mre purpsefully, with pssible slutins that we have in frnt f us.”
      28. What fact abut the cral reefs brught Lesneski t tears?
      A. Their health is damaged by pllutin.B. Their survival is at risk due t warming.
      C. Their turism value has drpped greatly.D. Their lcatin is changing during heatwaves.
      29. What des the underlined wrd “buffer” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
      A. Mdel.B. Cmpetitin.C. Standard.D. Prtectin.
      30. Hw d the scientists deal with the challenge facing crals?
      A. By adding sme man-made crals.B. By cntrlling water temperatures.
      C. By mixing species fr adaptable crals.D. By prviding crals with health treatments.
      31. What is Silverstein's attitude twards cral recvery wrk?
      A. Wrried and dubtful.B. Realistic and determined.

Cmedy writer Je Tplyn spent thirty years writing jkes fr famus TV hsts befre asking a simple questin: “Can I teach a cmputer t be funny?” He built an AI tl named Witscript, where fr six dllars a mnth, users culd give the system a headline r a picture and receive a jke in secnds.
In a small “laugh-ff” experiment, a cmedian read jkes written by bth Tplyn and Witscript t live audiences. Scientists measured the laughter and fund that the human and cmputer jkes brught almst the same level f amusement t the audiences. Experts have even said that fr a cmputer, writing certain kinds f jkes may be easier than driving a car.
One thery fr why we laugh is that a jke creates tw pictures in ur minds at nce. Here is an example: “Tw fish are in a tank. One says, ‘Yu drive. I’ll sht.’” The wrd “tank” can mean a fishbwl r a war machine, and the surprise f cnnecting the tw makes us laugh. Tplyn turned this idea int steps fr his AI tl. When given the news“Christie’s is selling a pink diamnd (钻石) nce wned by Marie Antinette —— aFrench queen whse head was cut ff due t her terrible deeds,” Witscript replied, “It has the perfect cut —— just like her head,” mixing jewelry and histry in a clever, dark way.
Hwever, cmputer humr still has clear limits. Sme jkes repeat unfair fixed ideas, such as always targeting larger r lder peple as the punchline (笑点). Withut human editrs, many f the machine-prduced jkes are simply disrespectful t certain cmmunities, bringing mre cnfusin than laughter.
Mre imprtantly, a jke is nt nly abut the wrds. Fr nw, machines can cpy the shapes f jkes, but they dn't laugh, redden, r wrry abut a friend's reactin. A cmputer cannt feel this scial dance. As AIhelpers becme part f ur daily lives, a bit f prgrammed humr may make them friendlier. Still, the deepest laughter will remain a human cnversatin f shared human needs and feelings—— ne heart speaking t anther.
      32. What des the “laugh- ff” experiment shw?
      A. AI writes jkes faster than humans.B. AI fails t judge the quality f jkes.
      C. AI-written jkes match human humr.D. AI finds writing jkes easier than driving.
      33. What are the examples in paragraph 3 intended t explain?
      A. Histry is a rich surce f jkes.B. AI-made jkes are mstly bring.
      C. Dark humr requires high intelligence.D. AI can create humr with smart cnnectins.
      34. What wrries the authr abut AI-made humr?
      A. It slws dwn human creativity.B. It can be cstly fr rdinary users.
      C. It may have negative scial effects.D. It hardly tuches n peple's lifestyles.
      35. Which f the fllwing reflects the main idea f the text?
      A. Real humr lies in emtinal cnnectins.B. Humr depends n culture and surprise.
      C. Cmedians will pssibly lse jbs t AI.D. AI is prgressing fast in creative tasks.

Hwever, with extra scial events and duties, I managed the easy nes early and put ff making my fur-year-ld Avery’s favrite——gingerbread(姜饼) ckies——until mid-December. Fr mnths, she had dreamed f biting int a “blue-iced by”, and I prmised t save her the first ne.
One freezing December night, while my husband Matt and I were washing dishes, Avery rushed int the kitchen with a messy muth. “The dirt utside fell in my muth,” she said nervusly. Matt and I exchanged a dubtful lk —— she hadn’t gne ut. It was belw freezing utside, and she wre n cat r shes. Her stry made n sense, and a wrried feeling grew heavy in my chest.
“Sweetie, tell me the truth,” I asked, getting dwn t her level. She led me all arund the huse, making up excuses, until I fund small pieces f smething dark in the bathrm sink(洗脸盆) upstairs. I gt really scared, and my vice grew serius. “Avery, this is imprtant. Tell me what yu ate——it culd make yu sick.”
Her eyes filled with tears. “The ckie,” she answered sftly. But there were n ckies ut ——until it hit me: the pretty gingerbread decratin hanging n the Christmas tree in the living rm. Hand in hand, we walked ver and fund the piece n a lwer branch, ne arm already missing. Matt and I laughed, feeling a bit relieved.
We sat her dwn and explained gently that it wasn't a real ckie, adding that while hnesty mattered mst, we weren't angry——we were just thankful she hadn't gtten hurt by anything harmful. Avery burst int tears, aplgizing repeatedly and prmising never t d it again. Her sincere regret warmed ur hearts. We hugged her clse, understanding that her silly cver-up came frm a simple, hungry wish.
Later that night, Matt and I reflected n the issue in the living rm. ____________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
