In an incredible(难以置信的)display of compassion and kindness, a man from Turkey was spotted trying to warm a pigeon in the most creative way.
Sabahattin Yilmaz was at home one chilly day. After a rain shower had passed, he noticed something landed on the sill (窗台) outside his window—a cold and wet pigeon. The animal was trembling and soaked; it clearly didn’t have the chance to seek shelter before the rain began. Feeling for the poor pigeon, Yilmaz thought of a way to dry him off.
Rather than pick him up and take him inside to warm up, Yilmaz plugged in a hairdryer and used it to dry off the bird. Little did he know that his neighbor captured the whole moment on video. In the video, Yilmaz can be seen leaning out of his window. He was stretching his arm as far as he can so the hot air can reach the pigeon. The bird willingly let the man warm him up, crouching (蹲伏) to let his outer feathers dry.
Yilmaz told the media that he spent about fifteen minutes drying off the bird. He said he had just opened his window when he saw the pigeon around the corner of the sill. He described it as wet and “about to freeze” from the cold and rainy weather.
After fifteen minutes, Yilmaz gave the pigeon birdseed, which he ate happily. However, the bird remained wet still. “I saw that it was still there so I warmed it up again, after the pigeon recovered again, and after eating a good amount of seed, it flew away,” Yilmaz recalled.
He also didn’t know that he was being recorded at the time and that the video was shared online. He simply did it out of the kindness of his heart. “The pigeon is a living creature and deserved to continue living, that is why I did it,” he said.
24.What is the text mainly about?
A.A man lives in harmony with a pigeon.
B.A man invented a creative way to help birds.
C.A man warmed up a wet and cold pigeon.
D.An online video about a pigeon became a hit.
25.What was the bird’s reaction to Sabahattin Yilmaz’s behavior?
A.It was scared and flew away.
B.It was annoyed and refused his help.
C.It was ready to accept his assistance.
D.It was happy to settle in his home.
26.What can we see from the video?
A.A man was filming Yilmaz’s kindness.
B.Yilmaz was warming a pigeon in an unusual way.
C.Yilmaz was stretching his arms to catch a pigeon.
D.A pigeon was jumping back and forth when dried off.
27.Which of the following words can best describe Sabahattin Yilmaz?
A.Indifferent but creative. B.Patient and ambitious.
C.Talented but careless. D.Sympathetic and warm-hearted.
C
To develop one’s taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books extensively. Yet one may be at a loss to choose the appropriate books, especially as a beginner. As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was somewhat disastrous. I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. It’s not the vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too remote to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway’s novel A Farewell to Arms. No long and complicated sentences. And I particularly liked his brief and straightforward(简洁的) style. So my first suggestion is, as a beginner, you’d better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones.
However, if you restrict yourself to novels you will miss a lot of treasures. English essays can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell’s work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the peculiar sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy (哲学) within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my second suggestion—essays are indispensable.
Never follow others’ recommendations and opinions blindly, however famous or influential(有很大影响的) the person might be.We should be open to various ideas, but always think and determine for ourselves. As a saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. With that in mind, we are bound to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
28.What made the first English novel that the author read hard to understand?
A. Complicated conversations.
B. The old-fashioned vocabulary.
C. Not knowing the social background.
D. Sentence construction and thinking pattern.
29.Which can best replace the underlined word “indispensable”?
A. Relevant. B. Challenging.
C. Inspirational. D. Necessary.
30.What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?
A. Compare books before buying.
B. Read books that are instructive.
C. Don’t be affected by others’ choices.
D. Choose books that challenge us most.
31.What is the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. Give comments on literature works.
B. Tell beginners how to choose English books.
C. Recommend first class books to English learners.
D. Encourage people to read more English books.
D
However exciting space travel sounds, astronauts must still suffer with bad food. Now, food in space has to be dehydrated (使脱水) or precooked and stored. This means astronauts aren’t really eating fresh food.
New technology may change this. Scientific American reports that a specially-designed oven will be sent into space this autumn with NASA’s NG-12 cargo mission. Far from the common vacuum-packed meals, astronauts may get to enjoy freshly baked cookies before the end of 2020.
Why aren’t they baking cookies in space already? For one thing, there’s the risk of a fire. Engineers also have to overcome the challenge of micro-gravity(微重力), which prevents heat from circling inside ovens the same way it does on Earth.
Astronauts will still have to wait a while before they can have their cookies, though. After baking, the results will be sent back to Earth for safety testing. If successful, this will be the first oven to bake food in space.
“ I believe... that will be game-changing for both science and astronauts,” food technology researcher Maeena Naman Shafiee told Scientific American.
One of the main driving forces behind this project has been NASA’s 2018 research into the effects of “confinement (封闭) and isolation (隔离)”. Unlike on the International Space Station (ISS), astronauts traveling out of Earth’s orbit (轨道) may not be able to speak to their loved ones on future missions, which could lead to negative feelings.
It’s hoped that the chance to bake and sense familiar smells can bring joy to astronauts.
“Is the ISS going to smell like fresh-baked cookies? We don’t know,” said NanoRacks’ communications manager Abby Dickes. “But that’s feeling we all know and love... that will make someone feel at home.”
Baking cookies in space would mark an important step, offering a small comfort in the difficult and unfamiliar environment of space travel. Astronauts have already grown plants aboard the ISS.
With commercial space travel now being planned, who knows what other developments may surprise us in the future?
32. What can astronauts do with the new oven in space in the future?
A. They can cook a meal B. They can eat cookies.
C. They can bring more fresh food D. They can prepare food quickly
33. According to the passage, why can’t astronauts bake cookies in space now?
A. Cooking in space needs some special cooking skills.
B. Micro-gravity makes it dangerous to cook in space.
C. It’s expensive and inconvenient to bring fresh food to the space.
D. It’s difficult to heat food the same way as on Earth because of different gravity.
34. Which one is NOT the purpose of designing the special oven?
A. To provide a new game for astronauts to play in space.
B. To make improvements in space travel.
C. To prepare some fresh food for astronauts.
D. To bring the feeling of home to the astronauts.
35. The author is most likely to think that the future of astronautical development will be ________.
A. unknown B. surprising C. imaginable D. confusing

When it comes to having fun in the sun, it’s easy to lose track of time. If you’re not careful, this can be quite dangerous. 36 But it can easily be prevented — all you need is a little sunscreen(防晒霜).
37 People have been using chemical pastes to protect themselves from the sun for centuries. But the first modern sunscreen sold on the market was offered by French company: L’oreal in 1935.
Several other companies were quick to release their own sunscreens. Perhaps the biggest advancement in the world of sunscreen came in the 1970s, when scientists started looking at the sun protection factor, or SPF. 38
The advantages of using sunscreen are obvious. It limits the painful effects of sunburn.
39 Millions of people have died from skin cancer caused by ultraviolet rays (紫外线). Remember to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside.
Unfortunately, there are many mistaken ideas about sunscreen. 40 Some also think you only need to put it on once for a whole day’s protection or that you don’t need it on cloudy days. None of these things are true. Experts say you should apply sunscreen every two hours when outside— in the daytime, no matter how dark your skin is or what the weather is like.
A. And it can even save your life.
B. Sunscreen is not exactly a recent invention.
C. Choosing a sunscreen isn’t as simple as it used to be.
D. It’s believed that you don’t need much sunscreen if you have dark skin.
E. In direct sunlight, sunburn can occur in less than 15 minutes.
F. This rating is a number that shows how effective a sunscreen is.
G. Some think a good method is to cover as much as possible with protective clothing.

Growing up, we didn’t have much money. Actually, we had very little. We lived in a small house with holes in the floor. We wore old clothes and had little food. With three little mouths to feed, my daddy worked as a gatekeeper in a middle school and then farmed our own small field until dark. Daddy provided the best he could for us and mama made our clothes on her old sewing machine. We could have easily applied for welfare, but my parents wouldn't think of it. Our family was full of love and proud of hard work
Then I was in the third grade, in Mrs. Harper’s class. One day, Mrs. Harper brought a huge box of toys to school to give to “poor” children. Everyone was invited to bring some of his or her own toys from home to put in the box. Needless to say. I had hardly any toys of my own to offer.
My eyes got big the next day when I looked into that box. It was like a dream world to me — so many colorful toys! Clearly, Mrs. Harper saw the curious look on my face, and although I never asked with a smile, she let me pick out two toys for myself from the box. I was so thankful and thought that I was the luckiest girl in the whole world!
When I got home. I couldn't wait to show mama what I brought from the school. She admired the toys and asked where I got them. I told her about the box for the poor children and that Mrs. Harper had let me pick two toys from the box!Mama thought for a few seconds and said in a very sweet way, “No…no, You can’t keep these two toys.”
Paragraph 1:
Mama explained to me that those toys were for “poor” children.

Paragraph 1:
Mama explained to me that those toys were for "poor" children. She took me by the hand and showed me around our house and said that we had a house to live in and that we had enough to eat. Above all, we had a family and we loved each other. We were not poor at all. But there were many children who didn't. They were the people who really needed the toys. Eventually she asked me to take the two toys back to school and put them in Mrs. Harper's box.
Paragraph 2:
Mrs. Harper said she understood chat mama meant. And after school, she took me and some of my classmates to the street to hand out those toys. When I saw the smiles on the faces of those homeless children, I began to understand what mama had told me. Mama was long gone. But her words have stayed with me all the time.
