T adapt t climate change, sme flwers are darkening their clr t prtect themselves frm the sun’s radiatin, new research shws.
The study suggests that ver the past 75 years, the ultravilet (UV) pigments (紫外线色素) in flwers have increased in respnse t rising temperatures and the thinning zne layer (臭氧层). The flwers wn’t lk any different t humans, but insects cnsider the higher levels f UV pigments as a darker clr, which culd be cnfusing when they try t find ut clrful flwers t land n.
The UV-absrbing pigments in flwers wrk like sunscreen and prtect sensitive cells frm harmful radiatin, Matthew Kski, a plant eclgist at Clemsn University, says. He and his team hped t determine if changes in pigments were a result f envirnmental change and if s, what are the plants respnding t? The team cllected dried, pressed plants acrss Nrth America, Australia and Eurpe. In ttal, they studied 1, 238 samples frm 42 different species dating back t 1941. Then, using a UV-sensitive camera, they phtgraphed flwer petals frm each species. Next, they paired the phtgraphs with the histric lcal temperature and zne level data frm the time the plant was picked t see hw the pigment level changed ver time.
The researchers fund that the changes in pigments differ between species, a result f the flwers’ structure. Flwers with pen, expsed pllen had mre UV-absrbing pigments when zne levels were lw and radiatin was high. But flwers with pllen surrunded by the petal respnded t temperatures, nt zne levels.
As climate change cntinues t intensify, these changes in flwers’ clr can affect plant-insect interactins. When the whle flwers get darker, insects might miss the flwers entirely. “This has a negative influence n plant reprductin,” Kski says.
28.What is the cause f flwers’ clr changing accrding t the research?
      A. The impact f the climate crisis.B. The lss f natural habitats.
      C. The harm f nuclear radiatin.D. The thickening f the zne layer.
29.Hw did Kski’s team get their findings?
      A. By cllecting phtgraphs f flwers frm different species.
      B. By analyzing hw levels f UV pigments change ver time.
      C. By cllecting abundant samples frm varius species.
      D. By analyzing histric lcal temperature and zne level data.
30.What can we learn abut the change in pigments?
      A. It exists in flwers with expsed pllen nly.
      B. It respnds t temperatures and sea levels.
      C. It remains the same regardless f species.
      D. It varies depending n the flwers’ structure.
31.What is Kski’s attitude tward the change in flwers’ clr?
      A.Cncerned. B.Indifferent. C.Unclear. D.Optimistic.

In the past few years, cnsumers have becme mre aware f the imprtance f sustainability in fashin. They want t knw hw prducts are made t ensure that their purchases aren’t negatively impacting the envirnment. This shift in cnsumer behavir has made traceable (可追踪的) cttn very ppular with fashin brands, as it ensures the cttn cmes frm farms that advcate fr sustainable practices — and, in turn, allws the brands t market their prducts as such. T meet this demand, farmers are increasingly perfrming sustainable practice — things like prmting bidiversity and minimizing harmful pesticides.
Mving a farm t sustainable agriculture can be challenging, hwever. “Traceability cvers all activities during the grwing seasn thrugh t harvest, which largely relies n date cllectin,” says Raymnd Daniels, manager fr BASF’s agricultural slutins. Withut using technlgy, this data prcess can becme trublesme. Farmers are nt experts, says Daniels, and ften dn’t have the time needed t capture everything. T ensure the traceability f their cttn, mre farmers are turning t BASF’s e3 cttn prgram.
Aside frm data tracking, farmers have the added benefit. “Once the cttn is harvested, we take the Permanent Bale ID (issued by the USDA) and attach that t the data captured in ur platfrm,” says Daniels. “we can trace everything back t the field in which it was grwn with the ID.” When brands knw the cttn they are buying is frm a sustainable farm, they are ften willing t pay mre fr it.
Mark and Cali Nland have seen the benefits firsthand. The traceability prvided by the e3 prgram has pened up new pprtunities fr them—including direct partnerships with clthing manufacturers. “In the past, we’ve been ttally at the mercy f what the market is ding,” Cali says. Nw, by emplying technlgy, they’re able t negtiate a price that reflects the actual value f their sustainably-prduced cttn. “With ur cttn, we’ve been able t make individual relatinships with sme fashin brands wh want t knw what practices yu are ding n the farm fr the quality f their prduct,” says Cali.
      32. Why d farmers tend t adpt sustainable agriculture?
      A. Because cnsumers favr the cttn prducts.
      B. Because sustainable practices guarantee the quality.
      C. Because farmers want t satisfy the market requirements.
      D. Because the fashin brands grw envirnment-cnscius.
      33. What is BASF’s e3 cttn prgram aimed at?
      A. Explring new market fr cttn farmers.
      B. Sparing farmers the labrius wrk n land.
      C. Adjusting the prcess f agricultural prductin.
      D. Prviding traceable infrmatin f signed cttn.
      34. What benefits d the farmers gain thrugh e3 prgram?
      A. Easy netwrk access.
      B. Cperatin with manufacturers.
      C. Independent pricing.
      D. Output expansin.
      35. What is the suitable title fr the text?
      A. The Rise f Traceable Cttn: Technlgy Enables Sustainable Farming
      B. The Sustainable Agriculture: Unavidable Changes Are n the Way
      C. BAST’s e3 Prgram: Cperatin Bsts Cnfidence
      D. The Greener Fashin: Quality Always Cmes First
