Tw weeks ag, I had vlunteered t raise three newbrn American barn wls. When the directr f a lcal wildlife rehabilitatin (康复) center first apprached me and asked if I wuld be interested in raising “the babies” I was verjyed! Twelve years earlier, the center had received a pair f barn wls, and since then mre than 100 f them have been bred and released. Thughts pured thrugh my head f hurs happily spent raising these babies and wrking with them until they were fully grwn. Tssing them up int the sky where they wuld begin their lives anew in the wild wuld be s incredibly rewarding.
Hwever, I had assumed incrrectly that we were ging t release all f them. In fact, tw f the wls were t be released, but the third wl was t be used as an educatinal animal. Fr the center t keep ne wl when his tw siblings were ging t be freed seemed cruel, and this angered me. Sensing my anger, ur directr suggested that befre I denunced the plan fr this wl, I shuld at least g ut and help with the educatinal assignment, t see what is accmplished. While still ready t regard this plan as a hrrible use f an wl, I reluctantly agreed t g.
Then, things tk a 180-degree turn. I fund that I had been naive in my assumptin that mst peple knew as much abut wildlife as I did, and that they shared my respect fr animals. The children at the schl where I spke had never seen the wls r the pssum that I shwed them, thugh bth were cmmn inhabitants f ur area. Many f them had never even heard f an celt. They were full f questins and eager t knw mre. At that mment, it ccurred t me that in frnt f me were rms full f 6-and 7-year-lds wh, with the “help” f the wls, were learning t view nature in a whle new light.
That afternn, I returned frm the educatinal assignment with a new-fund sense f purpse and happily cmmenced that task at hand — feeding little pieces f mice t Athena, ur newest educatinal ambassadr.

根据第一段“When the directr f a lcal wildlife rehabilitatin (康复) center first apprached me and asked if I wuld be interested in raising “the babies” I was verjyed!(当当地一家野生动物康复中心的负责人第一次联系我,问我是否有兴趣抚养‘婴儿(指幼鸟)’时,我欣喜若狂!)” 故选A。
根据划线词上文“Fr the center t keep ne wl when his tw siblings were ging t be freed seemed cruel, and this angered me.(其中一只仓鸮被中心扣留,另外两只它的兄弟姐妹却要被放生,这似乎很残忍,让我感到很气愤)”可知,作者觉得康复中心计划放飞两只仓鸮而滞留一只的做法是残忍的。由此可推知,作者对这样的计划是不赞同的;“Sensing my anger, ur directr suggested that befre I denunced the plan fr this wl, I shuld at least g ut and help with the educatinal assignment, t see what is accmplished.(我们的主任察觉到我的愤怒,建议我在denunced这只猫头鹰的计划之前,至少应该出去帮忙完成教育任务,看看完成了什么。)”
根据第三段“The children at the schl where I spke had never seen the wls r the pssum that I shwed them, thugh bth were cmmn inhabitants f ur area. Many f them had never even heard f an celt.(我演讲的学校里的孩子们从未见过我给他们看的仓鸮或负鼠,尽管他们都是我们地区的普通居民。
结合第二段第二句“Fr the center t keep ne wl when his tw siblings were ging t be freed seemed cruel, and this angered me.(其中一只仓鸮被中心扣留,另外两只它的兄弟姐妹却要被放生,这似乎很残忍,让我感到很气愤)”和第三段最后一句“At that mment, it ccurred t me that in frnt f me were rms full f 6- and 7-year-lds wh, with the “help” f the wls, were learning t view nature in a whle new light.(在那一刻,我突然意识到,在我面前的教室里挤满了6、7岁的孩子,他们在仓鸮的‘帮助’下,正在学习以全新的视角看待自然)”可知,作者认识到留下一只仓鸮是十分有必要的,这样有利于孩子们了解自然,才能更好的保护野生动物。 故选A。

A mment ccurs in the exchange between prfessr and student when each f us adpts a lk. My lk says, “What, yu dn’t understand?” Theirs says, “We dn’t. And we think yu’re making it up.” We are having a prblem. Basically, we’ve all read the same stry, but we haven’t used the same analytical appraches. It may seem at times as if the prfessr is inventing interpretatins ut f thin air.
Actually, the truth is that as the slightly mre experienced reader, the prfessr has acquired ver the years the use f a certain “language reading”. Besides, he has grasped three prfessinal tls-memry, symbl and pattern. These items separate the prfessinal readers frm the rdinary nes.
English prfessrs are cursed with memry. When reading a new bk, I cnstantly seek ut cnnectins and inferences, recalling faces and themes frm past readings. I can’t nt d it, althugh there are plenty f times when that ability is nt smething I want t exercise. This des nt necessarily imprve the experience f ppular entertainment.
Prfessrs als read and think symblically. Everything is a symbl f smething, it seems, until prven therwise. We ask: What des the thing ver there represent? The kind f mind that wrks its way thrugh undergraduate and then graduate classes in literature and criticism tends t see things as existing in themselves while als representing smething else. This tendency t understand the wrld in symblic terms is enhanced by years f training and rewards the symblic imaginatin.
A related phenmenn in prfessrial reading is pattern recgnitin. Mst prfessinal students f literature learn t take in the specific detail while seeing the patterns that the detail reveals. Experience has prved t them that life and bks fall int similar patterns. Literature is full f patterns, and yur reading experience will be much mre rewarding when yu can step back frm the wrk, even while yu are reading it, and lk fr thse patterns.
      8. Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic?
      A. By describing a real-life scene.B. By using ppular qutes.
      C. By presenting cnflicting ideas.D. By raising an interesting questin.
      9. Why d the students think the prfessr is making up interpretatins?
      A. They have limited life experience.
      B. They lack chances fr sufficient reading.
      C. They are unable t analyze the text thrughly.
      D. They d nt trust the prfessr’s teaching abilities.
      10. What des paragraph 3 say abut English prfessrs?
      A. They have a strng desire t nt have their gd memry.
      B. Their reading habit desn’t always guarantee desirable effects.
      C. Their memry adds t their reading pleasure f ppular wrks.
      D. They keep making cnnectins with their wn life while reading.
      11. Which is the authr’s suggestin n reading literature?
      A. Identify the hidden text mdes. B. Perceive many things at the same time.
      C. Lk fr details and language patterns.D. Memrize patterns f symblic meanings.
A 9. C 10. B 11. A

根据文章第一段“A mment ccurs in the exchange between prfessr and student when each f us adpts a lk. My lk says, “What, yu dn’t understand?” Theirs says, “We dn’t. And we think yu’re making it up.” ( 在教授和学生的交流中,我们每个人都有一个眼神。我的表情在说:“什么,你不明白吗?”他们的回答是:“我们没有。我们认为这是你瞎编的”)”并结合下文指出是分析方法的不同导致交流和理解上的挑战推知,作者通过描述教授和学生之间交流的实际场景引入了话题,故选A。
      【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Actually, the truth is that as the slightly mre experienced reader, the prfessr has acquired ver the years the use f a certain “language reading”. Besides, he has grasped three prfessinal tls-memry, symbl and pattern. These items separate the prfessinal readers frm the rdinary nes. (事实上,事实是,作为稍微有经验的读者,教授多年来已经学会了使用某种“语言阅读”。此外,他还掌握了三种专业工具——记忆、符号和图案。这些项目将专业读者与普通读者区分开来)”推知,学生们可能认为教授在编造解释,是因为相较于教授他们是普通的读者,没有掌握一些阅读技巧,导致无法完全理解文章内容。故选C。
      【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“English prfessrs are cursed with memry. When reading a new bk, I cnstantly seek ut cnnectins and inferences, recalling faces and themes frm past readings. I can’t nt d it, althugh there are plenty f times when that ability is nt smething I want t exercise. This des nt necessarily imprve the experience f ppular entertainment(英语教授的记忆力很差。在阅读一本新书时,我不断地寻找联系和推理,从过去的阅读中回忆面孔和主题。我不能不做,尽管很多时候我不想锻炼这种能力。这并不一定会改善大众娱乐的体验)”可知,英语教授的阅读习惯并不一定能保证理想的效果。故选B。

Researchers have develped a machine learning algrithm (算法) t accurately detect heart murmurs (杂音) in dgs, ne f the main indicatrs f heart disease. The research team, led by the University f Cambridge, adapted an algrithm. riginally designed fr humans and fund it culd autmatically detect and grade heart murmurs in dgs, based n audi recrdings frm digital stethscpes (听诊器).
“Heart disease in humans is a huge health issue, but in dgs it’s an even bigger prblem,” said Dr Andrew McDnald frm Cambridge’s Department f Engineering. “Rughly ne in every thirty dgs seen by a vet has a heart murmur, althugh the incidence is higher in small breed dgs and lder dgs. Mst smaller dg breeds will have heart disease when they get lder, but bviusly dgs can’t cmmunicate in the same way that humans can, s it’s up t primary care vets t detect heart disease early enugh s it can be treated.”
The researchers started with a database f heart sunds frm abut 1,000 human patients and develped the machine learning algrithm. They then adapted it s it culd be used with heart sunds frm dgs. The researchers gathered data frm almst 800 dgs that were underging rutine heart examinatin. All dgs received a full physical examinatin and heart scan t grade any heart murmurs and identify heart disease. Their heart sunds were recrded using an electrnic stethscpe. The researchers adjusted the algrithm s it culd bth detect and grade heart murmurs based n the audi recrdings, and tell the difference between murmurs assciated with mild disease and thse reflecting advanced heart disease that required further treatment.
“S many peple talk abut AL as a threat t jbs, but fr me, I see it as a tl that will make me a better dctr, ” said.c-authr. Prfessr Jse Nv Mats. “We dn’t have enugh time r veterinary (兽医的) specialists t screen every dg with a murmur. But tls like these culd help vets and wners, s we can quickly identify thse dgs that are mst in need f treatment.”
      12. What is the functin f the machine learning algrithm?
      A. T recrd sunds f dgs.
      B. T treat heart disease in dgs.
      C. T identify and rate heart murmurs in dgs.
      D. T train vets t recgnize heart murmurs in dgs.
      13. Why is heart disease in dgs cnsidered a bigger prblem than that in humans?
      A. Dgs can’t express their symptms like humans.
      B. Vets are less skilled in detecting heart disease.
      C. Dgs have a higher incidence f heart disease.
      D. Heart disease in dgs is harder t treat.
      14. What can be inferred abut the researchers’ apprach t develping the algrithm?
      A. Adapting the algrithm fr dgs was unplanned.
      B. Dg data was priritized ver human data t r accuracy.
      C. The algrithm is less accurate fr dgs than fr humans.
      D. The develpment f the algrithm was based n human data.
      15. What is Jse Nv Mats attitude t the use f AI in veterinary medicine?
      A. Skeptical.B. Negative.C. Psitive.D. Neutral.
C 13. A 14. D 15. C
