On the eve f the 77th anniversary fthe D-Day landings, I fund myself n Omaha Beach, leading a small band f cllege students int the past.
Fr mre than 20 years, my cwrkers and I have taken students frm the University f
Texas at Austin t Eurpe as the highlight f half-year-lng study f Wrld War II. There’s
nthing like being there t discver what happened there 77 years ag r hw much it can teach us tday.
We bard a bus and enter the American cemetery (墓地). A staff member greets us and tells us abut the 9,380 graveyards here. We turn t face the cemetery as the natinal anthem (国歌)
plays ver the ludspeaker. Tears well up in my eyes at the memry f my father, wh flew fr 30 missins ver France and Germany in the spring and summer f 1944.
Each student receives a yellw rse t place at the grave f a Texan sldier. The headstnes give us nly the name, rank, unit, hme state and date f death. We can guess hw ld they were, fr the students are abut the same age.
We return t the beach and lk at the peaceful scene that we knw was anything but
peaceful 77 years ag. “Bldy Omaha” was the deadliest beach f the landings. Mre than 2,400 Americans were killed r wunded, r went missing in actin. N ne wh survived ever frgt it.
Our students understand the sacrifices made that day and the cst f war, bth humans and materials. They face a wrld different frm the ne their grandfathers and great-grandfathers lived in but just as cmplex and even mre dangerus. Pandemics, pllutin and the threat f climate
change present challenges that n previus generatin has faced.
I have faith in this yung generatin. We can learn much frm the D-Day landings and

Large gatherings such as weddings and cnferences can be scially verwhelming. Pressure t learn peple’s names nly adds t the stress. A new facial-recgnitin app culd cme t the
