the grcery stre fr bananas, ging t his cardiac-rehab (心脏康复) exercise class, r having lunch with friends. Recently he tld us, “I’ve climbed halfway up Munt
Washingtn!” Given his age and distance frm New Hampshire, such a hike had been unlikely.
Each email clses with “All my lve, Dad.” When my mther was alive, that
feeling was nrmally reserved fr her. Nw that she is gne, he shares thse feelings and his experiences with us. Fr me, what started as a simple security measure has
spawned deeper clseness.
I’m grateful my father is still able t manage his cmputer and the Internet. I

In recent years, cnsumers have increasingly sught “clean-label” fds —
prducts made with natural ingredients. This trend has driven scientists t search fr safe, natural preservatives They have turned their attentin t a
part f the cashew nut (腰果) that is ften thrwn away — the shell. Frm it, they
extract Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) and find that it cntains special natural
substances that can fight bacteria and prevent decay (变质). While this dark liquid has been studied fr use in industries like paint and medicine, its ptential fr preserving
fd had nt been fully explred until nw.
The scientists designed a careful experiment t test whether CNSL culd help preserve beef, ne f the mst widely cnsumed meats glbally. They applied the
liquid t beef samples at different cncentratins Sme meat was left untreated as cntrls. The samples were then stred under different cnditins —
sme at rm temperature and thers in refrigeratin — fr tw weeks.
During strage, a detailed micrbilgical evaluatin was cnducted t quantify ttal viable (活菌) cunts and specific spilage rganisms (腐败菌), including
Pseudmnas spp., Clstridium spp., and Prteus spp. Physicchemical analyses
mnitred changes in pH and water activity, while bacteria grwth was assessed
during strage at rm temperature. The scientists discvered that the CNSL-treated meat shwed significantly less bacterial grwth than untreated meat. The effect was
strngest at higher cncentratins, with a 2.0% slutin prviding excellent prtectin while maintaining meat quality. Even at rm temperature, it effectively delayed the
meat’s suring prcess and reduced bacteria grwth, helping the beef stay fresh-lking lnger.
The researchers nte that further studies are needed t understand whether the liquid affects the taste and texture f the beef, and hw it might be cmbined with mdern packaging fr even better results. Still, this study pens a windw int
nature’s wn way f keeping fd fresh — hidden inside a humble cashew shell.

A .T reduce waste in the fd industry.
B .T imprve the taste f prcessed fds.
C .T find natural alternatives t artificial preservatives.
D .T develp new industrial materials fr paint and medicine.
9 .What was the primary fcus f the micrbilgical evaluatin?
A .The variety f cashew species.
B .The safety f refrigerated beef.
C .The changes in pH and water activity.
D .The effectiveness f CNSL against bacteria.
10 .What des the experiment suggest abut CNSL?
A .It can imprve meat quality ver time.
B .It perfrms best at rm temperature.
C .It speeds up the meat’s suring prcess.
D .Its cncentratin and the strage life are clsely related.
11 .What is the authr’s attitude twards the future f CNSL?
A .Fully cnvinced.
B .Cautiusly ptimistic.
C .Hesitant and dubtful.
D .Neutral and bjective.

Surprisingly, the extra atmspheric carbn
dixide (CO2) didn’t bst plant grwth as climate mdels predicted, likely due t
limited availability f nutrients plants need like phsphrus (磷) and ther basic nes — a factr that must be cnsidered in estimating the fate f frests.
The Amazn rainfrest, which spans an area nearly as large as the cntinental

annually, is als at risk. It suffered its wrst drught in 2024, with defrestatin
reaching 17 percent. Scientists have warned it culd face widespread dieback by 2035
under the pressure f climate change, defrestatin and extreme weather like strms. Other trpical frests face similar threats. Africa’s Cng Basin frests, nce
relatively stable, have shwn increased tree death rate since 2010. Sutheast Asia’s frests are endangered by the develpment f urbanizatin and agriculture.
A reprt made by the U.N. Envirnment Prgramme (UNEP) ntes that abut

erased ff frm the green blck frever. Prtecting these frests will require glbal financial investments t triple t $ 300 billin by 2030, yet glbal effrts fr the
prtectin are falling shrt f the intended cmmitments. “Trpical frests are huge carbn reservirs and we must cherish the frest carbn stcks already built up ver centuries.” says the prgramme manager Wannes Hubau in the reprt. “Lsing them wuld be like setting ff a carbn bmb, wrsening climate change.”
12 .What happened t the Australia’s trpical frests?
A .They were expanding rapidly.
B .They became a carbn-friendly place.
C .Their wdy bimass was n increase.
D .They were turning int carbn emitters.
13 .What might limit Australia’s frest grwth with mre CO2?
A .Lng-term data analysis.
B .Limited basic nutrients.
C .Strage f carbn in trunks.
D .Climate mdel expectatins.
14 .What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A .Trpical frests will die back by 2035.
B .Farming destrys frests in trpical regins.
C .Trpical frests face grwing glbal threats.
D .Drughts cause mst rainfrest lss wrldwide.
15 .What can we learn frm the UNEP reprt?
A .Few trpical frests is at high risk.
B .Trpical Frest cnservatin lacks funds.
C .The death rate f trpical frests is declining.
D .Africa’s frests have the highest tree death rate.

The scientists discvered that the CNSL-treated meat shwed significantly less bacterial grwth than untreated meat.(在储存过程中,进行了详细的微生物评估,以量化总活菌数和特定的腐败菌,包括假单胞菌属、梭菌属和变形杆菌属。
根据第三段中“The effect was strngest at higher cncentratins, with a 2.0% slutin prviding excellent prtectin while maintaining meat quality.(这种效果在较高浓度时最强,2.0%的溶液在保持了肉质的同时提供了极佳的保护。)”
The researchers nte that further studies are needed t
understand whether the liquid affects the taste and texture f the beef, and hw it might be
cmbined with mdern packaging fr even better results. Still, this study pens a windw int

plants need like phsphrus (磷) and ther basic nes — a factr that must be cnsidered in
The Amazn rainfrest, which spans an area nearly as large as the cntinental United States and is currently shuldering a quarter f land-based carbn dixide
annually, is als at risk.(亚马逊雨林的面积几乎与美国大陆一样大,目前每年担负着四分之一的陆地二氧化碳,也面临着风险。)”
Prtecting these frests will require glbal financial investments t triple t $ 300 billin by 2030, yet glbal effrts fr the prtectin are falling shrt f the
