It was a breezy afternn in late September at Oakwd High Schl. The bys n the track team were cling dwn after a lng run, chatting and stretching. Sixteen-year-ld Jasn, wh had just transferred t the schl a few weeks prir, sat quietly n the bench, watching his teammate Le rest. They weren’t clse yet, as Jasn was naturally shy.
Suddenly, Le started cughing vilently. He drpped his water bttle and held his thrat. His face began t turn pale, and then a scary shade f blue. He wasn’t making any sund.
“He’s chking!” smene yelled. The team frze in panic. It was clear Le didn’t have much time.
Chking blcks the airway, preventing xygen frm reaching the lungs and brain. Withut immediate interventin, it can lead t uncnsciusness and even death within minutes.
Jasn’s heart punded. He had attended a junir lifeguard camp ver the summer where he learned the Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法) — a first-aid prcedure used t treat airway bstructins. He had never practiced it n a real persn, but seeing Le’s desperate eyes, Jasn
      knew he had n chice.
Rushing behind Le, Jasn wrapped his arms arund his teammate’s waist, made a fist, and gave Le a few quick, hard upward pushes n his stmach. It was physically demanding, but
Jasn pushed thrugh his fear. On the furth push, a large chunk f a prtein bar flew ut f Le’s muth. Le cllapsed nt the grass, taking deep, greedy breaths fair.
“I thught I was a gner,” Le recalled later. “Jasn is my her. He didn’t even hesitate.”
Tday, the tw are best friends. The incident changed Jasn, t. “I used t dubt myself a lt,” Jasn says. “Nw I knw I can step up when it matters. I’m actually lking int medical
      schls fr the future.”
24 .What happened t Le after the lng run?

Imagine a leisurely Saturday mrning. Yur best friend texts, “Any chance yu culd help me mve tday?” Yu sigh — there g yur weekend plans — but reply, “Of curse.” A week
later an unfamiliar c-wrker makes the same request. This time yu hesitate. Psychlgists call this tendency “scial discunting”: genersity declines as scial distance increased.
Sme neurscientists prpse that BLA, the baslateral amygdala (基底外侧杏仁核), a key brain regin, helps weigh the prs and cns by assigning value nt just t ur wn well-being but als t the well-being f thers.
T test the prpsal, the researchers turned t a grup f peple in Suth Africa wh have Urabach-Wiethe disease, a very rare genetic cnditin that causes selective damage nly t the
BLA. They invited five wmen with this cnditin and 16 wmen withut it t take part in a
scial discunting task. Each participant listed eight peple frm her wn scial netwrk, ranging frm her emtinally clsest persn t smene she barely knew r a cmplete stranger. They
were given a fixed amunt f mney and decided hw much t share with each f their eight cntacts in several runds.
As expected, all participants were mre generus t clse cntacts, with genersity
drpping as scial distance increased. Interestingly, thse with brain damage were less generus
verall than thers. They were still willing t help thse they were emtinally clsest t, but their willingness t give drpped ff markedly fr mre distant individuals.
The findings shw the BLA is part f a neural netwrk that guides scial decisin-making, rather than simply prmting r hlding back prsciality — behavirs like sharing, helping and cperating. The intact BLA allws peple t cnsider scial cntext, scial nrms, and learned expectatins in scial interactins when deciding whether t be generus.
With BLA damage, individuals may struggle t balance generus and selfish mtives and cnsequently rely n simpler, primitive strategies.
Therefre, genersity, shaped by interpersnal clseness, is a mdel-based scial behavir. Deep in the brain, the BLA is helping us d that calculatin.
28 .Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic?
A .By presenting a familiar scene. B .By psing a dubtful questin.
C .By illustrating a mral dilemma. D .By criticizing a scial behaviur.
29 .What can be inferred frm the research?
A .BLA damage reduces genersity tward strangers.
B .The subjects distributed the mney casually.
C .The tw grup differed in scial netwrk sizes.
D .The discunts varied based n the physical distance.
30 .What’s the rle f BLA accrding t the text?
A.A mral judge. B.An emtin marker. C.A scial middleman. D.An interest evaluatr. 31 .What des the underlined wrd in paragraph 5 prbably mean?
      A .Inactive. B .Cmplicated. C .Healthy. D .Damaged.
      D
With rws f sharp teeth and pwerful jaws, bull sharks are sme f the mst aggressive
and dangerus sharks n the planet. Despite their fearsme reputatin, these massive creatures
als seem t have a mre sensitive side: Bull sharks frm friendships f srts with ther members f their species, just like humans, accrding t a study published in the jurnal Animal Behaviur.
Marsi, a shark behavir researcher at the University f Exeter in England, and her
clleagues spent six years bserving 184 bull sharks — 33 males and 151 females — at the Shark Reef Marine Reserve. The creatures were either tagged r identified via unique features, like
scars, and were divided int three age categries: subadults (nt sexually mature), adults, and
advanced adults (past reprductive age). Researchers swam amng the sharks five times a week
between 2018 and 2023, making detailed ntes abut the way they scialized with ne anther and recrding vides, during which they wrte dwn mments when sharks were within ne bdy
length f ne anther and when they swam alngside r behind each ther.
The data revealed that sharks seemed t prefer t assciate clsely with sme individuals while actively aviding thers. The mst cmmn interactins were amng sharks f a similar size. Then, females were the mst ppular cmpanins amng bth sexes, the team als fund. Meanwhile, adults were the mst scial and seemed t frm the cre f the scial netwrk.
Yunger sharks likely avid scializing t reduce the risk f attacks while lder nes shw
reduced sciability because scial bnds becme less critical t their survival, the researchers
      assume.
Overall, sharks are ften thught f as lnely creature. But the findings add t the grwing bdy f research suggesting these creatures are quite varied. In additin t bull sharks, past
research has suggested that ther shark species may als have cmplex scial lives. Understanding these scial interactins culd help cnservatinists better prtect sharks threatened by climate
change, verfishing, bycatch, pllutin and ther challenges.
32 .What is a feature f the research methd?
A .Fcusing n a specific age grup. B .Cnducting three lab experiments.
C .Using immersive field bservatin. D .Measuring the bdy length accurately.
33 .What can be cncluded abut the scial behavir f the sharks?
A .They prefer t assciate with the ppsite sex.
B .All age grups shw equal scial engagement.
C .Females secure a center place in scial netwrk.
D .Their scial pattern is shaped by survival needs.
34 .What is the significance f the research findings?
A .They cautin against the threats t sharks.
B .They guide efficient cnservatin measures.
C .They reveal varied categries f bull sharks.
D .They cnfirm the ppular belief abut sharks.
35 .Which f the fllwing can be a best title?
A .Bull Sharks: The Lnely Killers fthe cean
B .Frm Jaws t Friends: The Scial Lives f Sharks
C .Beware f Sharks: Hidden Dangers in the Ocean
D .Hw t Make Friends with a Shark: A Guide

Reusable water bttles were always ppular with utdr enthusiasts wh tk them n hikes and with envirnmentalists wh ppsed single-use water bttles. 36
Water bttles have cme ut f the back f the stre and nt the frnt shelves as their
ppularity sared. That’s because cnsumers, especially Gen Zers began t view reusables as
mre than just functinal water cntainers but as charming fashin accessries (配饰).
37 It came frm scial media. The water bttles are cnnected t yung peple’s utfit and lifestyle. Gen Zers are als decrating their bttles with stickers, key chains, and are
purchasing accessries like backpacks fr their bttles.
38 But if yu want t be ec-friendly, having multiple reusable bttles defeats the purpse. Specifically, a reusable bttle needs t be used arund 500 times t cancel ut its
envirnmental cst. S many yung cnsumers may nt fully understand the impact f buying multiple bttles.
Nevertheless, it is undeniable that there are definitely plenty f gd reasns t wn a
reusable water bttle. Nt nly is staying hydrated (补水) a fundamental key t yur health but
als having a water bttle with yu reminds yu t drink. 39 Aside frm that, switching t a reusable bttle rather than dispsable bttled water will help reduce yur carbn ftprint and will keep plastic ut f landfills and ceans.
Prmting healthy self-care habits is a big part f Gen Z values. 40 S, befre yu head t yur nearest Target r Walmart, think abut whether yu really need a new ne. Is having the newest clr r design really necessary?
A .But hw did this turn t s-called Water Bttle Culture?
B .After all, hydratin ges a lng way fr fcus and energy.
C .Water bttle culture may be cute, but cre values matter mst.
D .What rle des scial media play in prmting reusable prducts?
E .Despite a cmmn sight, they are nt typical simple reusable bttles.
F .The manufacturers are fllwing their lead by making varius bttles.
G .Envirnmentalists are warning against this trend f ver-cnsumptin.

One summer day my father sent me t buy wire fr ur farm. At 16, I liked nthing better than driving ur ld truck, feeling the wind thrugh the pen windw and the rar f the engine. But this time I was nt happy. My father had tld me I’d have t ask fr credit at the stre.
Sixteen is a prideful age, when a yung man wants respect, nt charity. It was 1976, and the ugly shadw f racial discriminatin was still a fact flife in ur small twn. I’d seen my friends ask fr credit and then stand, head dwn, while the stre wner questined whether they were
“gd fr it.” I knew black yuths just like me wh were watched like thieves by the stre clerk each time they went int a grcery. The memry f their embarrassed faces burned in my mind.
My family was hnest. We paid ur debts. My parents wrked frm dawn t dusk, and we never tk anything that wasn’t urs. But befre harvest, cash was always shrt. The crps were still green in the fields, and every dllar had t stretch. Wuld the stre wner trust us? My heart punded as I parked the truck in frnt f Davis’s stre, dust rising arund the wheels.
At Davis’s stre, Buck Davis std behind the cash desk, talking t a farmer I didn’t knw. The air smelled f leather and feed. I ndded as I passed him n my way t the hardware shelves, my hands slightly sweaty. I picked up the bunch f wire and added a few ther supplies we
      needed.
When I brught my purchases t the cash desk, I cleared my thrat and said carefully, “I need t put this n credit.” The wrds felt heavy n my tngue.

66 .Caring Club Brings Safety Knwledge t the Elderly
Last week, the Caring Club f ur schl rganized a meaningful visit t a lcal cmmunity t supprt the elderly. The primary gal f this activity was t imprve the senirs’ safety
awareness and teach them essential first-aid skills.
During the visit, vlunteers distributed illustrated handbks and gave vivid demnstratins n hw t handle cmmn emergencies, such as accidental falls and chking. The senirs
participated enthusiastically, practicing the techniques under the students’ patient guidance.
The event was well-received by the cmmunity. It nt nly prvided the elderly with practical survival skills but als strengthened the bnd between the yung and the ld.
67.The farmer gave me an amused, distrustful lk but Buck’s face didn’t change. “Sure,” he said easily, reaching fr the wire. “Yur daddy is always gd fr it.” He turned t the farmer and
added, “Here is ne f James Williams’s sns.” The farmer’s expressin sftened. He ndded in a neighbrly way, as if seeing me fr the first time. A wave f relief washed ver me, fllwed by smething warmer — pride. Thse three wrds, James Williams’s sn, had pened a dr t an
adult’s respect and trust. I walked ut f the stre with my head high, the wire in my hands feeling light.
That day I discvered the gd name my parents had earned. It brught ur whle family
the respect f ur neighbrs. Everyne knew what t expect frm a Williams: a decent persn wh kept his wrd and respected himself t much t d wrng. Driving hme, I understd that a
gd name wasn’t smething yu asked fr — it was smething yu lived. My father had given
me mre than a truck that day. He had given me a legacy f hnesty, and the quiet pwer f being knwn as smene wh culd be trusted.
