Stretching alng the Brazilian castline, the Atlantic Frest supprts an extrardinary range f life. Hwever, human develpment has reduced the frest t abut a third f its riginal size. This pressure has led t the decline, migratin, r disappearance f many species, altering the fd surces that msquites depend n.
T understand what msquites were feeding n, a research team set light traps at tw natural reserves in the state f Ri de Janeir. Female msquites that had recently fed were separated and studied in the lab. Scientists extracted DNA frm the bld inside the msquites and analyzed a specific regin f DNA that acts as a bilgical barcde. Each vertebrate (脊椎动物) species has its wn versin f this genetic marker. By matching the barcdes t reference databases, the team culd identify the animals that had been bitten.
The traps cllected 1,714 msquites frm 52 different species. Amng them, 145 females were fund t be carrying bld, and researchers were able t identify the surce f the bld meals in 24 individuals, which came frm 18 humans, ne frg, six birds, ne canid (犬科动物), and ne muse. The finding suggests that with fewer natural ptins available, msquites are feeding mre n humans ut f cnvenience, as humans are the mst abundant hst in these areas. “Msquit behavir is cmplex,” ne researcher said. “Althugh sme msquit species may have natural preferences, hst availability and nearness are extremely influential factrs.”
Hwever, msquit bites are nt just annying. In the regins studied, they spread viruses like yellw fever, which pse serius health risks. Researchers emphasized that understanding msquit feeding behavir is essential fr grasping hw diseases circulate. Althugh the study highlighted gaps in data — with fewer than 10% f captured msquites carrying visible bld meals, and surces identified in nly abut 16% f thse cases — the findings already ffer practical value. They can help guide msquit cntrl effrts and imprve early warning systems fr disease utbreaks.
      8. Why d msquites change their fd surces?
      A. Their species are declining.
      B. Their habitats are shrinking.

      B. Humans emerge as a dminant bld surce.
      C. Only a small number f msquites spread viruses.
      D. Msquit feeding behavir is t cmplex t be explained.

The appearance f strange “islands” cvered with reeds (芦苇) n the drying lake bed f Utah’s Great Salt Lake may finally have an explanatin. There is a vast, natural netwrk f undergrund water channels frm the depths, piping in freshwater that feeds areas where plant life can grw, accrding t detailed surveys cnducted by scientists ver several years.
This pens a new windw int the lake’s vast, cmplex ecsystem that may help scientists learn hw it wrks and hw it might be preserved. “The last thing we wanted t d is fr this t be characterized as a water resurce we shuld be tapping,” says Bill Jhnsn f the University f Utah. “It’s much mre fragile than that, and we need t understand it better.”
The Great Salt Lake is ne f the mst envirnmentally imprtant bdies f water in the US. Wrried abut its stability, scientists have been recrding the lake’s slw drp in water levels since the 1980s. As the water level falls, the salt cntent f the lake increases, upsetting the careful balance n which life in the lake depends. There’s a dwnside fr humans, t. The drying lake expses and dries the sediment (沉积物) n the lake bed, which turns t dust that affects nearby twns and cities when the wind blws. Fr these reasns, it’s imprtant t understand where the lake’s water cmes frm. Mst f it cmes frm rainfall and water flwing ver the surface, but the cntributin frm grundwater beneath the lake is unclear.
In February 2025, Jhnsn and his clleagues hired a cmpany called Expert Gephysics t make full surveys ver Farmingtn Bay, which measure the magnetic fields (磁场) ver a given area. Scientists can then use these data t generate a 3D recnstructin f what’s under the grund. Cupled with data cllected frm the surface, a cmplex picture f an undergrund freshwater reservir (水库) is taking shape. On the “islands” themselves, the water is freshest at the center, becming saltier and saltier the farther frm the center yu g. The new measurements suggest that the reservir culd g in sediments mre than 3,000 meters belw the surface. “In my mind, it culd help reduce any dust generatin n the expsed lake bed,” Jhnsn says.
      12. What des the underlined wrd “fragile” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Weak.B. Large.C. Cmplex.D. Sufficient.
      13. Hw des the drying Great Salt Lake negatively impact humans?
      A. By reducing rainfall in cities.B. By leading t pr air quality.
      C. By plluting lcal freshwater.D. By causing mre wind disasters.
      14. What was the team’s primary gal in wrking with Expert Gephysics?
      A. Cllecting data fr further research.
      B. Mnitring the water level f the lake.
      C. Measuring the magnetic fields f the lake bed.
      D. Generating a 3D mdel f the undergrund freshwater system
      15. What d Bill Jhnsn’s findings suggest abut the freshwater?
      A. It just flats n the lake surface.
      B. It mainly surrunds the reed beds.
      C. It influences the lcatins f reeds.
      D. It hardly mixes with the salty lake water.
