Shetara Sims had weathered sme tugh years. In 2012, her eldest daughter suffered severe injuries during an
argument in Kansas City, Missuri. Last year, the single mther lst her jb in the hard times. She had nly $7 in
her pcket as she headed int the grcery stre ne day last July with her 12-year-ld daughter, Rakiya Edmndsn.
And then luck finally turned Sims’ way. She and her daughter fund a dllar bill in the parking lt. Maybe this
was their day, they tld each ther. S they bught a lttery ticket (彩票) — and wn $100.
But befre they culd spend their windfall, Rakiya had an idea. The news in Kansas City that week had been
filled with stries abut a plice fficer, Tyler Mss, wh had been sht in the head in the line f duty. He was in
critical cnditin. Rakiya and her mther had never frgtten hw kind the plice had been after their wn family
member was attacked. “The detectives were really there fr us,” Sims says. “They came t see my kids. They were
fathers, therapists (治疗师). They were everything.” Rakiya wanted t give their lttery winnings t Officer Mss’s
family. Her mm readily agreed.
On July 10, Sims called the plice and made an annymus (匿名的) dnatin. Mved by her generus act,
the fficers did what they d best — they tracked Sims dwn. When she explained the family’s mtivatin, the
fficers culd hardly believe it. “With her current financial hardship, we encuraged her t keep the mney,” the
department later explained. “She refused, saying the fficer’s family needed it and plice needed t knw they were
supprted.”
By then, that feeling f supprt was mutual. The plice set up a GFundMe page fr Sims and her daughter,
whm they named “The Wman with the Heart f Gld.” Their gal was $10,000. By January 11, 2021, they had
raised $165,405. Even better: Officer Mss, wh had a 1 percent chance f survival, is ut f the hspital and

Researchers have created a map f Antarctica revealing thusands f never-befre-seen hills, valleys and
plains beneath the ice. This new infrmatin culd help scientists understand hw the changing climate will affect
the cntinent.
Antarctica is almst ne and a half times the size f Eurpe. Mst f it is cvered in a layer f ice that’s three
miles thick in places, which makes it difficult t see the shape f the land underneath. The new map has changed
that.
In the past, scientists used radar frm air and grund surveys t wrk ut what the land surface might lk like.
Radar sends ut radi waves, which bunce ff the grund and are reflected back. Researchers can then wrk ut
hw far away the land is beneath the ice, revealing hills, valleys and plains. The truble is, there are big distances
between the areas they’ve surveyed, leaving scientists t fill in the gaps.
T create the new map, the team used satellite images, surveys f the surface ice and an understanding f hw
ice mves. Althugh ice behaves differently t water, the scientists were able t figure ut hw the ice had flwed
and pinpint (精准定位) the muntains and valleys underneath it. “It’s like kayaking in a river with rcks
underwater. Eddies (漩涡) in the surface tell yu abut the rcks under the water,” said the study’s lead authr,
Helen Ockenden frm the University f Grenble-Alpes in France.
Mapping the land underneath Antarctica is imprtant. The cntinent is lsing ice as the planet warms. As the
ice melts, it falls int the cean, raising glbal sea levels. Scientists are nt sure hw much ice the cntinent will
lse in the future and hw this will raise sea. The shape f a landscape affects hw quickly ice mves acrss its
surface, and the speed at which it pushes up sea levels.
Experts say the map will give a better idea f what’s ging t happen in the future. “It’s like a grainy pixel (像
素颗粒感的) film camera befre, and nw a prperly zmed-in digital image f what’s really ging n,” said
Ockenden.
8. Why did the researchers create a new map?
A. T study ice in Eurpe. B. T frecast sea level changes.
C. T replace ld survey tls. D. T shw Antarctica’s hidden land.
9. Hw did scientists discver the landfrms beneath Antarctica’s ice?
第 6页/共 13页
A. By studying ice mvement. B. By drilling ice surface deep.
C. By creating eddies at sea. D. By analyzing satellite images.
10. Why des mapping the Antarctic land underneath matter?
A. It helps slw glbal warming in Antarctia.
B. It helps explain past glbal sea level rise.
C. It helps predict ice melt and sea level rise.
D. It helps measure the current amunt f ice.
11. What des Ockenden intend t shw by mentining the cameras?
A. Hw much the new maps are imprved.
B. Hw many detailed maps they have made.
C. Why the ice melts s quickly in Antarctica.
D. When the new technlgy will be used.

Symblic f beauty, pride, and wealth in sme cultures — likely thanks t the males’ rainbw-clred tail
feathers and dramatic curtship display — peaccks are ften assciated with being cnfident and
attentin-grabbing. S, perhaps it’s n surprise that these striking creatures can be used in a metaphr t illustrate
cmplex family dynamics.
Being hnest abut the ups and dwns f family life isn’t smething yu’ll usually hear frm a ‘peacck
parent’. Instead, they’ll prject the perfect family, parading their child’s talents in public, while criticising them
behind clsed drs when disappinted. Fr the child n the receiving end f this treatment, it can feel like their
value is nly as part f a shw put n fr everyne else’s entertainment.
Yu may have heard the saying “as prud as a peacck”, which describes smene wh thinks highly f
themselves and likes t be the center f attentin. When this appears in parenting, it is called narcissistic (自恋的)
parenting. Such parents lack understanding and care fr their children’s feelings, ften cntrl r influence them in
rder t meet their wn emtinal needs, and always want t feel pwerful r special in the family.
The phrase became mre widely knwn after British psychtherapist and writer Kathleen Saxtn published
her bk My Parent the Peacck. In the bk, she lks int hw narcissistic parenting influences children. She
als talks abut tw cmmn rles these children take n: the ‘scapegated child’, wh becmes a target fr the
parent’s wn wrries and shrtcmings, and the ‘glden child’, wh is treated like smething valuable t make the
parent feel mre imprtant and superir.
第 7页/共 13页
Cunsellr Olena Chechel says this arrgant behaviur cmes frm deep insecurity and lack f cnfidence
inside these parents. That is why they see their children mre like parts f themselves r tls t help them feel
successful and imprtant.
“The child must be perceived as acceptable, shiny, r significant, as this all ties back t them. The message is
simple: ‘Yu have t be what I tell yu t be, because I knw best,’” Olena says. “This is deeply harmful fr the
child, as they are nt able t develp their wn identity.”
12. Why des the authr mentin “peaccks” in the first paragraph?
A. T shw peacck charm. B. T intrduce a parenting methd.
C. T fix family cnflicts. D. T illustrate the family cmplexity.
13. What d the peacck parents lk like?
A. They priritize children’s feelings ver evaluatins.
B. They express their disappintment t children publicly.
C. They attach imprtance t thers’ perceptin f their family.
D. They share their real family situatin with peple arund them.
14. What’s the rt cause f the parents’ behavir?
A. Their lw self-wrth. B. Their high expectatins.
C. Their heavy wrk pressure. D. Their rich life experience.
15. What is Olena Chechel’s attitude tward peacck parenting?
A. Supprtive. B. Indifferent. C. Tlerant. D. Critical.
