New Label Helps Cnsumers Better Determine Fd Quality
Determining whether fd has spiled can be a tricky task. The 11 ver “use by” and “best befre” labels ften results in safe and cnsumable fd being thrwn ut. This issue
cntributes significantly t the glbal fd crisis, as rughly ne-third f the fd prduced fr the wrld is being wasted and millins f peple in dzens f cuntries are facing 12 hunger
each year. Hwever, a grundbreaking inventin called Mimica Tuch aims t help tackle this crisis by prviding a mre accurate methd f evaluating the safety f fd 13 .
Cnsisting f a label that transfrms in texture 质地 when fd spils, Mimica Tuch
features a plastic sheet with raised lines inside a 14 that signal spilt fd. The plastic
bumps 凸块 are cvered with a thin layer f natural substance that 15 at the same rate as the fd. When the substance turns frm a slid state t a liquid state, the label transfrms frm firm and smth t sft and bumpy, 16 that the fd has gne bad.
Slveiga Pakštaité came up with the 17 fr Mimica Tuch while she was a student at Brunel University in Lndn. The gal f the riginal prject was t help peple with 18 prblems check the use-by date n packaged fd. Pakštaité said she was inspired by banana
skins, which change texture as they 19 . Althugh Mimica Tuch began as a university
prject, the inventin has the ptential t 20 reduce the huge quantity f fd that ges t

When AI Teammates Cme n Bard, Perfrmance Drps
Researchers studied the impact f artificial intelligence n team functining. They asked 110 tw-persn grups t play 12 runds f a vide game in which participants had t cllect
ingredients fr a recipe. After the first six runds, ne member f sme teams was ________ by an intelligent agent. Over the next six runds, thse grups gathered, n average, three fewer
ingredients than grups that remained in their riginal . The cnclusin: When AI teammates cme n bard, perfrmance drps.
studies have already explred the impact f artificial intelligence n individual
and firm prductivity, but the researchers aimed t understand hw AI affects rganizatinal
teams internally. , mst wrk is dne in teams. They were curius abut the
cnsequences f adding intelligent agents t teams, nt just fr the peple interacting directly with thse agents. The researchers als sught t examine what impact it had n the behavir and
attitudes f clleagues wh thse interactins.
In the runds f individual play, the AI players prved far superir t human players. In fact, nly 3% f human players the AI players.
The team results were a different stry. In the initial rund after the AI players jined, teams with an AI member gathered 8% fewer ingredients, n average, than teams that kept their
members. The perfrmance narrwed by half ver the next fur runds and disappeared in the final rund. But even if shrt-lived, a 4% drp in perfrmance is significant, fr a large rganizatin with multiple AI prjects underway.
Despite the AI’s superir individual perfrmance and the fact that were given t the entire team if it perfrmed well, 84% f respndents preferred t play with their human
teammates. Surveys f participants shwed that AI reduces team sciability and thus members’ mtivatin, effrt, and trust.
Interestingly, all-human teams playing alngside an AI-and-human team als saw drps in
perfrmance in the first rund after the teammate change. These cntributed equally t the verall prductivity lss. This is called the spillver effect, similar t what happens in an
rganizatin when an emplyee departs and cperative practices are upset. and prcesses are disturbed, which harms perfrmance. The same was true in the experiment.
Thse teams, despite nt underging a direct change, encuntered indirect challenges in t the new AI-influenced dynamics within the intercnnected envirnment.

      A Treasure Hunter’s $7.5 Millin Discvery
      ____________________
Alex Clausen is a map dealer and a mdern-day treasure hunter. An incredible find
While deep in a virtual tur f an estate sale in the autumn f 2022, Clausen uncvered an ld seafaring map: a centuries-ld mariner’s chart. The chart, which the estate sale dated between 1500 and 1525, caught his eye. The estimated price, between 10 ,00and150,000, seemed fitting fr a chart frm the 16th century. But smething didn’t quite fit. The map seemed
      lder.‘Hidden in plain sight’
As Clausen examined the chart mre clsely n a web-based platfrm, the date just didn’t
seem right. But finding ut the exact age and hw much the chart was truly wrth tk Clausen n a mnths-lng histrical jurney.
The first knwn reference t the chart came frm an Italian schlar wh, in 1888, mentined it in an article he wrte fr the Italian Gegraphic Sciety. The schlar rughly dated it frm 1347 t 1354. It changed hands several times befre Ann and Grdn Getty purchased it in 1993. The
cuple had the map restred, and fr years it hung in the library f their San Francisc twnhuse. The clues
The chart extends frm the islands f the Nrth Atlantic Ocean t what is nw Eastern Eurpe. The clues initially led Clausen t suspect the map had been drawn arund 1420. He cnsulted with schlars and catalgers. After reviewing images f the map, a medievalist suggested it might date t the mid-1350s.
“I was just suspicius,” Clausen said f the revelatin. “We were talking abut smething that really nly exists in a handful f natinal libraries.”
After the chart was purchased, Clausen sent it t a lab in New Yrk that determined the chart was created, n the early end, frm the 1320s t the 1350s and at latest frm the 1390s t the
      1420s.The mystery is slved
After hundreds f hurs f research, Clausen and his team finally had a date: 1360. The
Ruderman antique map shp is listing the chart f 1360 fr $7.5 millin. Clausen envisins a
university r museum taking wnership and placing it smewhere peple can enjy and learn frm it.
“After ver 30 years in the business, the greatest excitements are the discveries which are
truly unexpected. Yu dn’t knw where r when; yu simply prepare fr the jurney,” Clausen said f the experience.

Our lcal dg trainer, Clin Thmas, is abut t retire and we are heartbrken. A respected cuntryman, Clin knws the imprtance f respnsible dg wnership and the enjyment f a well-behaved pet, particularly in the cuntryside, where there can therwise be issues with
      livestck and wildlife.
We are a natin f dg lvers. There is n dubt that dgs bring many f us great jy, but
with wnership cmes respnsibility and the need fr training. Nt everyne lves dgs and even if they did, a dg in ur charge shuldn’t apprach, jump up r chase anybdy r anything. Few f us are perfect thugh, and if ur ‘recall’ isn’t always reliable, then ur dgs must be n a lead.
The attacking f livestck is a serius cncern, ften hrrible t witness, as is the effect dgs can have in disturbing wildlife. Bth these things are entirely avidable and yet a recent reprt
recrded that a shckingly irrespnsible 85% f visitrs ignred warning ntices and allwed their dgs ff-lead.
It’s nt just the mre bvius respnsibilities either: the ld advice f picking up p 粪便r simply brushing it aside has changed t bag it r take it hme t get rid f. Dg p spreads
bacteria and can cause fatal diseases in cattle and sheep. It als disrupts and harms ecsystems, especially when washed int the sil r bdies f water by rain.
It desn’t end there. Lking after dgs with unnecessary preventative treatments, as we are usually advised is causing great harm. Nt nly can rutine wrmers 驱虫剂 kill the tiny
creatures that keep ur sil healthy, but the pisnus chemicals als remain in the envirnment, creating a lng-term risk. Even tiny amunts f the flea 跳蚤 treatment can stay n a dg’s cat fr weeks. Eventually, these chemicals are either washed int rivers, where they pisn aquatic
life, r they remain in lst fur that birds then use t build their nests. But dg wnership desn’t
have t be a hrrr stry. We can limit these treatments. We can avid rivers and pnds if we have t treat ur pets, and can pick up after them.
The UK gvernment has issued a plicy fr respnsible dg wnership, emphasizing that
dgs must nt be allwed t wander unsupervised and that wnership practices need t change. It sets ut practical regulatins and, crucially, calls fr educatin and training fr bth wners and their dgs.
43 .When visiting a friend’s huse with his/her dg, the dg wner shuld .
A .keep the dg under cntrl at all times
B .let the dg play with new friends freely
C .take the dg ff the lead as advised
      D .teach the friend t say’recall’ crrectly
44 .If dg p is left n the rads, it harms the envirnment mainly by .
A .attracting ther wild animals t the area B .releasing pisnus chemicals int the air
C .being washed int sil and water D .creating unpleasant smells near ftpaths
45 .What can be inferred abut the authr’s preferred apprach t flea cntrl?
A .Treat dgs mnthly withut exceptin. B .Use treatments when actually needed.
C .Use strnger chemicals fr better prtectin. D .Never treat dgs under any circumstances.
46 .What is the writing purpse f the article?
      A .T highlight the negative impact f pet-keeping.
      B .T present a new plicy n dg wnership.
C .T raise awareness f respnsible dg wnership.
D .T prmte the imprtance f dg training classes.

Water Industry t Be Cleaned Up
The Gvernment has prmised t clean up the water industry in England and Wales
fllwing the publicatin f a new reprt. 47 Lts f sewage spills plluting waterways, plus the rising cst f peple’s water bills, are prblems in the UK. Sewage is waste water frm paths, sinks and tilets. In 2024, the Gvernment set up the Independent Water Cmmissin t investigate the water industry in England and Wales.
The cmmissin’s findings were published in a reprt that cntained 88 recmmendatins t imprve the way the water industry is run. 48 One is clsing Ofwat, the rganizatin
respnsible fr making sure water cmpanies deliver a gd service fr their custmers and the envirnment. The minister said that, as well as angry custmers, Ofwat has “failed t prtect ur waterways frm recrd levels f pllutin”.
The reprt recmmends replacing Ofwat with ne regulatr in England and anther in
Wales. Currently, respnsibilities are split between Ofwat and three ther agencies. The
Gvernment has prmised t halve the amunt f sewage pumped int rivers, lakes and seas
within five years. Last year, sewage was released int England’s rivers and seas arund 450,000 times. 49 Hwever, peple’s water bills may rise t pay fr this.
Sme respnses t the Gvernment’s prmises were psitive. The Liberal Demcrat party said it supprts phasing ut Ofwat. Mark Llyd, frm the Rivers Trust campaign grup said the recmmendatins wuld lead t a dramatic imprvement in the water envirnment. 50
A .The Gvernment will als spend £104 billin t repair damaged pipes, build water treatment wrks and water strage facilities.
B.Its plans include cutting pllutin in rivers and seas and changing the way water cmpanies are held respnsible.
C .But three billin liters f water are wasted every day in the UK because f leaky pipes.
D .Hwever, sme activists said the reprt recmmendatins failed t priritize public benefit ver private prfit and the public are tired f swimming in sewage and drwning in rising bills.
E .Envirnment Secretary says the Gvernment will adpt five f these straight away.
F.It has annunced that a new law cncerning envirnmental prtectin will cme int effect next
      year.
      III. Summary Writing
51 .Directins: Read the fllwing passage. Summarize the main idea and the main pints f the passage in n mre than 60 wrds. Use yur wn wrds as far as pssible.
      Fight Fake Infrmatin
In this day and age, yu prbably get yur infrmatin frm varius websites and scial
media. Because fake news is spreading and becming influential in this digital age, it’s imprtant that yu dn’t take everything yu read at face value. The vlume f infrmatin encuntered
daily makes it necessary t take an analytical apprach t what yu read t make sure it is reliable.
Several skills including critical thinking, which refers t the practice f examining evidence, lgic, and cntext are essential. This skill helps yu identify gaps in infrmatin, distinguish
between fact and pinin and evaluate whether an argument is supprted by slid reasning.
Beynd analysis, critical thinking invlves asking meaningful questins — such as wh created the infrmatin, why it was shared, and what might be missing. In an age where misinfrmatin spreads rapidly, this mindset helps yu build a mental barrier t resist emtinal cntrl and
      clickbait.
In tday’s infrmatin rich wrld, we are cnstantly expsed t a huge amunt f cntent frm varius digital surces. Make the mst f yur digital literacy by using different frmats, platfrms and media t get and use infrmatin. Fr example, cnsider hw yu might cmbine different types f digital surces t gain a deeper understanding f a tpic.
Yu als need a strategy t determine whether nline cntent can be trusted. Mike Caulfield, a research scientist at the University f Washingtn’s Center fr an Infrmed Public, created the
SIFT methd t d that. This apprach helps yu analyze and decide if nline infrmatin is
reliable. First, stp — dn’t share right away, and check yur emtins abut the headline. Then, investigate the surce — lk up the authr r site using ther reliable surces. Next, find better cverage — see if trustwrthy sites cnfirm the infrmatin. Finally, trace claims back t their
riginal surce t check if they’re fairly presented.
