In cmic bks, Spider-Man swings frm skyscrapers, hanging frm threads (线) f silk. He shts these sticky threads frm his wrists. Nw researchers have fund a way t mimic (模仿) this superher material in real life.
It’s the first adhesive (黏着剂) that can stick t and lift things frm a distance. The new material shts ut f a syringe (注射器). It emerges as a liquid, and then quickly hardens int a pwerful thread. And it sticks t almst anything it tuches. Once hardened, the thread can lift bjects up t 80 times its wn weight.
Marc L Presti has been wrking n develping sticky materials at Tufts University. He teamed up with ther chemists t create the new material. When they talked with each ther abut this wrk, they always called it the “Spider-Man experiments”.
Back in 2021, L Presti had been develping an adhesive that culd stick securely underwater. He started with ccns (蚕茧). This is the first step fr mst f the Silk Lab’s wrk. They bil the ccns t break them dwn. This prduces a substance that is basically liquid silk. L Presti then mixed in anther chemical. This ne mimicked a sticky substance that mussels (a kind f animal) prduce t secure themselves t underwater rcks. His underwater adhesive wrked well. But then ne day when L Presti was cleaning his lab equipment with acetne, which is the same chemical substance used in many nail-plish remvers, immediately he nticed smething strange: His silk mixture rapidly turned slid. It lked like a web. Almst immediately he imagined creating sme srt f “web shter” t spread the material.
The team came up with several different silk recipes fr their web shter. These include different additives that mdify the thread’s prperties. One substance makes the silk thread strnger. It slidifies faster, t. Anther makes the silk thread stickier, thugh nt quite as strng.
Rsalyn Abbtt is a bimedical engineer. Her lab uses silk-based materials in bimedical engineering. Fr example, part f her wrk invlves develping bi-inks t use in 3D printing. A bi-ink is a liquid that can harden int a structure that supprts the grwth f living cells. The fact that the new material hardens s quickly might be very useful fr this. Meanwhile, L Presti has a different ultimate gal. He hpes t replace plastic-based adhesives with bidegradable alternatives such as silk. “I’m trying right nw t wrk n particle bard,” he says. “Currently, particle-bard makers mix wd chips with pisnus glues. These dn’t break dwn easily. Instead, using the new material culd make this and ther prducts ‘mre sustainable.’”
8. What can be knwn abut the new material frm paragraph 2?
A. Its inspiratin cmes frm a ppular mvie.
B. It can be very strng as sn as it becmes hard.
C. It can stick t whatever it cmes in cntact with.
D. It takes much time fr it t turn frm a liquid int a slid.
9. Hw did L Presti discver the new material’s prperty f turning slid?
A. By accident.B. By referring t previus research.
C Thrugh trial and errr.D. With the help f nail-plish remvers.
10. What des the underlined wrd “mdify” in paragraph 5 prbably mean?
A. Stabilize.B. Preserve.C. Examine.D. Change.
11. What’s the functin f the examples listed in the last paragraph?

B. T shw the barriers f mass-prducing the new material.
C. T display the pssible wide applicatins f the new material.
D. T highlight the cst advantages f the new material in the market.

In a recent study, researchers fund that dgs can be trained with sundbard buttns t cmprehend certain wrds and respnd with apprpriate behavirs.

The study used augmented interspecies (种间的) cmmunicatin devices, such as sundbard buttns that play a pre-recrded wrd when pressed, which are designed t strengthen the cnnectin with animals thrugh wrds recrded in their wner’s vice.
The published article described tw experiments. The first experiment invlved researchers examining the dgs’ cmprehensin f different phrases in persn by pressing sundbard buttns t bserve hw the dgs respnded. In the secnd, dg wners used the buttns r said these wrds t cnduct the trials themselves with remte guidance frm the researchers.
The researchers wre headphnes and sunglasses while cnducting the in-hme experiments t bserve whether r nt the dgs respnded t a certain wrd depending n their familiarity with the persn saying it. T ensure the dgs culd nt pick up any cues (暗示) n hw t respnd t a certain wrd, the researchers remained still after pressing the buttn and waited fr the dgs t react.
In bth experiments, the dgs demnstrated cmprehensin f the wrds played by the sundbard buttns; they made apprpriate behaviral respnses, such as standing by a dr when the wrd “utside” is played, regardless f the identity f the buttn presser.
“This study is a citizen science study, which means yu can’t 100% cntrl what happens in peple’s hmes and trust the findings. But ur findings are imprtant because they shw that wrds matter t dgs and that they respnd t the wrds themselves, nt just t assciated cues,” Rssan said.
12. What is the aim f the study by Rssan?
A. T learn abut dgs’ learning ability.B. T teach dgs sme wrds and phrases.
C. T figure ut dgs’ sensitivity t sunds.D. T explre dgs’ interspecies cmmunicatin.
13. What made the first experiment differ frm the secnd ne?
A. The subjects.B. The peratrs.C. The cntent.D. The aim.
14. What is the finding f the tw experiments?
A. Dgs are interested in varius sunds.
B. Dgs are able t read wrds and pick them ut.
C. Dgs and humans can interact withut difficulty.
D. Dgs can understand certain wrds and respnd t them.
15. What des Rssan think f the study prbably?
A. It is pineering.B. It is cmpletely reliable.
C. It has ptential limitatins.D. It fails t meet peple’s expectatins.
