(2026届湖北襄阳高三上学期质量检测(六))
It’s a familiar tale these days: A Canadian quits their exhausting day jb t pursue a dream, like pening a cffee shp, and finds freedm and jy. My stry is similar, with a twist.
It begins in 2016, during the last semester f my philsphy undergraduate, when I decided t becme a writer after being inspired by mdern and classic wrks I was reading. I earned a jurnalism master’s degree frm New Yrk University and wrked at Trnt Life magazine. I had sme success, interviewing imprtant figures and even writing fr The New Yrk Times. But behind the scenes, I was cnstantly stressed and struggling t make rent.
Then things changed. Last summer, a friend invited me t cach a small grup f 11-year-ld vlleyball players. I always lved vlleyball but had pushed it aside because I thught it culdn’t be a career. I jumped at the chance. Every mrning, I trained the kids n passing, setting and serving. I had gne frm interviewing peple t playing vlleyball with kids in the park. Surprisingly, I felt alive again.
Vlleyball reawakened a spirit f playfulness in me. I didn’t have t sit behind a cmputer all day. The parents paid me fairly and n time, and my wrk culd nt be replaced by artificial intelligence. S I went all in. I fund gym space, started running my wn clinics and created an rganizatin called Super Vlley.
Things are ging decently well s far. Like many small businesses, I’m at the mercy f a rising cst f living, a harsh ecnmy and cnsumers wh might devte their Saturdays t smething else. But I’ll keep ging because this vlleyball thing rewards me in ways that g well beynd mney r jurnalistic fame.

Passage 2
(2026届湖南衡阳高三上学期第一次联考)
I was sitting n my living rm sfa. “Get up and g t wrk ut,” I said t myself. N mvement yet. Picturing the athlete wh nce ran fr hurs, trained nnstp, and played with intensity culdn’t stir up the will t walk 10 yards t the gym fr even 20 minutes f lifting.
I had graduated frm cllege as a 21-year-ld yung man, and with that came the sudden end f my sccer career. Lsing that clarity hit harder than any physical challenge I’d ever faced. The scafflding f my life had fallen apart. It was replaced by a cmplex and cnfusing web f cmpeting pririties with n clear hierarchy(层次)—n cach telling me what mattered mst, n bvius way t keep scre. I felt directinless, empty and lst.
Mnths later, I met Arthur Brks, the authr f Frm Strength t Strength, by chance. He has spent decades studying what makes peple truly happy, and he has nticed a trubling pattern: We’ve lst ur cnnectin t meaning, and that is what puts us in a bad md. Meaning will slip away unnticeably. The jb that nce energized yu will becme rutine. This is nt failure but a human cnditin. We’re suppsed t lse ur sense f meaning peridically because we never permanently slve it.
The mst imprtant thing that Brks has taught me is that meaning isn’t a destinatin t reach but a way we travel thrugh life. The struggle never gets easier, but we can find jy in the difficulty. We can stp seeing these tugh times as ur enemies and start seeing them as partners, letting each crisis f meaning teach us smething new abut urselves and what we truly value.
Fr my sccer-playing self—wh was trapped in the belief that meaning shuld be permanent, smething given t us that prvides a slid, sensible structure fr ne’s life—this wuld have sunded like terrible news, but it’s actually liberating.

C.He was ambitius.D.He was disrganized.
6.What des the underlined wrd “scafflding” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Supprting item.B.Temprary plan.C.Hidden hardship.D.Emtinal bnd.
7.Why may we feel unhappy accrding t Brks?
A.We struggle t fllw ur rutines.B.We tend t pursue unrealistic gals.
C.We are discnnected frm meaning.D.We are faced with demanding tasks.
8.What lessn has the authr learned frm Brks?
A.Celebrating small mments in life.B.Accepting struggles as unavidable.
C.Welcming unpredictable changes.D.Valuing life’s jurney ver purpse.

Change fr Gd
Life itself is changing. T engage in life fully and jyusly, yu need t find ways t create and cpe with change in all aspects.
Equating health with stability, then yu have t think again. 1 Even that stability is nt permanent, but a temprary functinal state. Yur bdy seems slid, yet it is built n change.
2 What’s the mst slid and stable part? Yur bnes, which are replaced every three mnths. Every ther rgan is als in a state f renewal and destructin. Yur skin renews mnthly, and stmach lining renews every five days.
Change is unavidable, yet we fear it. 3 Hw many times have peple said t yu in a critical way, “Yu’ve changed” Similarly, “changing yur mind” is seen as a sign f weakness, althugh it culd mre prperly be seen as evidence f strength. In fact, t live a life f vitality and health, the ability t change yur mind is essential.
4 While yur bdy stps grwing lng befrehand, yur brain keeps develping int middle age, with white matter increasing in vlume until yur late 40s. Nt nly that, but the cnnectins between neurns resulting frm learning can cntinue t be created anew. Old dgs abslutely can learn new tricks.
Hwever, intellectually accepting change is nt necessarily enugh t bring change int life. 5 Fr instance, heart patients are better mtivated with “jy f living” than fear f death.
Create yurself a mindset fr change: frget the fear f letting g f yur ld habits and fcus n the jy that making change will bring.
A.The gd news is that yu are never t ld t change.
B.The idea here is that thrugh change stability is achieved.
C.T really fster change, yu have t access psitive emtins.
D.Regular exercise can help imprve yur ability t change quickly.
E.We are ften educated t stay cnstant, viewing change as negative.
F.Many peple believe that staying unchanged is the key t happiness.
G.Yur bdy tissue is in a cnstant state f turnver and regeneratin.

语法填空
(2026湖北省黄冈市高三上学期1月期末英语试题)
In the hustle and bustle f mdern life — where peple ften chase extreme success, argue ver ppsing views, 1 struggle with wrk-life imbalance — an ancient Chinese wisdm called the “Dctrine f the Mean” (Zhngyng) ffers a precius guide. 2 (riginate) frm Cnfucianism, this philsphy emphasizes “mderatin,” “balance,” and “harmny,” teaching peple t avid extremes and seek a middle way in all aspects f life.
Cntrary t the misunderstanding that it means “being rdinary” r “ding nthing,” the Cnfucian “Zhngyng” 3 (refer) t a state f “apprpriate actin” — ding the right thing, at the right time, in the right way. It was first 4 (systematic) clarified in the Cnfucian classic The Dctrine f the Mean, 5 states: “The mean is the highest virtue.” Fr Cnfucians, the “mean” is nt a cmprmise between tw extremes, but a harmnius integratin f different elements.
Tday, as we face unprecedented challenges — frm persnal anxiety 6 glbal cnflicts — the “Dctrine f the Mean” ffers a timeless 7 (slve) ; seek balance, avid extremes, and pursue harmny.
