Isatu Ceesay was brn in 1972 in a small village in Gambia Africa. As a
teenager, Ceesay was frced t drp ut f schl because f pverty. She carried
sme gds with many girls like her t sell in the market t raise herself. At that time, the plastic bags, being strng and light, became ppular in Gambia. The prblem was that peple did nt reuse the bags and simply threw them behind their hmes. Over
time, the huses were surrunded by trash.
Ceesay lived in such an envirnment fr many years. She kept learning frm the surrunding envirnment and planned t take actin t change. In 1997, she started a recycling mvement called One Plastic Bag in Gambia. She educated wmen in
Gambia t recycle plastic waste int incme fr themselves. In the beginning, the
mvement had a missin t educate their village clleagues abut the need t reuse
garbage and recycle plastic waste, rather than letting the garbage increase behind their hmes.
Over time, the mvement became big and able t supprt and prvide incme
fr wmen arund. It was als able t greatly reduce plastic waste in Gambia. But the wrk f cllecting trash turned t be taxing. During the rainy seasn, plastic waste
became wet and difficult t take, and after that it still tk patience t dry it befre it culd be prcessed.
Ceesay said, “As a habit, peple are used t puring their garbage behind their huses, and because it is nt visible, they frget it. But the bad effects again knck n yur dr very quickly-dirty air, varius diseases and s n. Of curse, if ne man’s huse is clean but his neighbr’s is nt, then the man is als nt healthy.”
Fr 17 years, Ceesay has cntributed t ne f the mst imprtant prblems abut the plastic waste. In 2012, she gt the TIAW Difference Maker Award in
Washingtn, D.C., United States. Her stry was written int a bk, which inspires many thers t jin r becme makers f change in their wn cmmunities.

Cral reefs, ften called the “rainfrests f the sea”, are hme t mre than
25% f marine species, yet they are facing an unprecedented crisis due t climate
change, cean acidificatin, and human activities. Accrding t a 2025 reprt frm
the Glbal Cral Reef Mnitring Netwrk, half f the wrld’s cral reefs have
disappeared since 1950, and anther 30% are at risk f extinctin by 2030. Hwever, a new study published in Nature Cmmunicatins in July 2025 has brught new hpe fr cral reef restratin.
The study, led by a team f scientists frm the University f Queensland and the Australian Institute f Marine Science, has develped a new “cral seeding”
technique that significantly increases the survival rate f yung crals in the wild.
Traditinal cral restratin methds usually invlve transplanting fully grwn cral fragments nt damaged reefs, which is labr-intensive, cstly, and has a survival rate f nly arund 30% in mst cases.
The new technique, by cntrast, cllects cral eggs and sperm during the
annual cral spawning event, raises them int baby crals in a cntrlled labratry
envirnment, and then plants them nt damaged reefs using specially designed
bidegradable carriers. These carriers, made frm plant-based materials, can prtect
yung crals frm predatrs and cean currents, while gradually breaking dwn in the water withut causing pllutin.
After a 12-mnth field trial n the Great Barrier Reef, the research team fund that the survival rate f crals planted with the new technique reached 78%, mre
than twice the rate f traditinal methds. What’s mre, the crals grwn with this methd shwed higher tlerance t rising cean temperatures, a key factr in cral bleaching events.
“Our technique slves tw f the biggest prblems in cral restratin: lw survival rates and high cst,” said Dr. Emma Harrisn, the lead authr f the study. “We can prduce hundreds f thusands f baby crals at a much lwer cst than befre, and scale up the restratin wrk acrss entire reef systems.” The research team is nw wrking with lcal cmmunities and envirnmental rganizatins t
apply this technique t ther damaged cral reefs arund the wrld, with prjects planned in Sutheast Asia and the Caribbean in 2026.
28 .What is the main prblem facing cral reefs accrding t paragraph 1?
A .They are lsing their ability t supprt marine species.
B .A large number f them are disappearing r at risk.
C .Ocean acidificatin has made them cmpletely uninhabitable.
D .Human activities have replaced them with artificial reefs.
29 .What is the disadvantage f traditinal cral restratin methds?
A .They can nly be used n the Great Barrier Reef.
B .They have a very lw survival rate and high cst.
C .They cause serius pllutin t the cean envirnment.
D .They require a large number f fully grwn crals.
30 .What des the underlined wrd “spawning” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A .Reprducing
B .Feeding
C .Migrating
D .Sleeping
31 .What can we learn abut the new cral seeding technique frm the text?
A .It uses plastic carriers t prtect yung crals.
B .It has been applied wrldwide with great success.
C .It imprves cral survival rate and heat tlerance.
D .It is mre labr-intensive than traditinal methds.

In an era dminated by shrt vides, 15-secnd scial media psts, and endless
digital ntificatins, deep reading — the slw, immersive practice f engaging with a lng-frm text — is ften dismissed as an utdated habit. Hwever, a grwing bdy f research in cgnitive science and educatin is warning that the decline f deep
reading is taking a hidden tll n yung peple’s intellectual and emtinal develpment.
Accrding t a 2025 study by the American Psychlgical Assciatin, the
average attentin span f teenagers has drpped frm 12 secnds in 2010 t just 8
secnds in 2025, shrter than that f a gldfish. Researchers link this decline directly t the rise f“skimming culture”, where peple scan digital cntent fr keywrds
instead f reading carefully. While skimming is a useful skill fr prcessing large amunts f infrmatin quickly, it cannt replace the cgnitive benefits f deep reading.
Deep reading, unlike skimming, requires sustained fcus and critical thinking. When we read a lng, cmplex text, ur brains are frced t make cnnectins
between ideas, fllw lgical arguments, and imagine scenaris described in the text. This prcess strengthens the brain’s prefrntal crtex, the area respnsible fr
decisin-making, prblem-slving, and emtinal regulatin. A 2024 study frm
Stanfrd University fund that students wh engaged in regular deep reading scred 23% higher n critical thinking tests than thse wh nly read shrt digital cntent.
Beynd cgnitive benefits, deep reading als plays a vital rle in develping empathy. When we read literary fictin, we step int the shes f characters frm
different backgrunds, experience their emtins, and see the wrld thrugh their
eyes. This practice helps yung peple understand and relate t thers, a skill that is increasingly imprtant in an increasingly divided wrld.
Critics f deep reading ften argue that it is inefficient in the digital age, where infrmatin is abundant and time is limited. But this argument misses the pint: deep reading is nt just abut absrbing infrmatin, but abut building the cgnitive and emtinal capacity t understand, analyze, and care abut the wrld arund us. As
Maryanne Wlf, a leading cgnitive neurscientist, nce said: “We read nt nly t knw what thers have experienced, but t becme the kind f peple wh can think
deeply, feel deeply, and act wisely.”
32 .What is the main argument f the text?
A .Skimming culture is mre efficient than deep reading in the digital age.
B .The decline f deep reading harms yung peple’s develpment.
C .Shrt vides and scial media have imprved peple’s attentin span.
D .Deep reading is an utdated habit fr yung peple tday.
33 .What can we learn frm the studies mentined in the text?
A .Teenagers’attentin span has increased with the develpment f digital media.
B .Skimming can significantly imprve peple’s critical thinking ability.
C .Regular deep reading helps imprve students’critical thinking perfrmance.
D .Deep reading has n effect n peple’s emtinal regulatin ability.
34 .Why des deep reading help develp empathy accrding t the text?
A .It teaches readers hw t express their emtins better.
B .It allws readers t experience the lives and feelings f characters.
C .It prvides readers with mre infrmatin abut different cultures.
D .It helps readers imprve their cmmunicatin skills with thers.
35 .What is the authr’s attitude twards deep reading?
A .Dubtful
B .Optimistic
C .Supprtive
D .Indifferent
