“What have I gtten myself int?” I wndered as I sat thrugh a research meeting cnducted entirely in Plish, unable t even read the title n the screen. Having nly basic Plish language skills, I fund my experiment in crss-cultural cperatin mre challenging than I had expected.
The idea f spending time abrad hadn’t ccurred t me until my advisr suggested it during my first year. With his supprt, I enjyed a remarkable summer in a labratry in Japan, which left me wanting mre. S, I applied fr a Fulbright fellwship in Pland. T receive the fellwship, I first had t find a lab t hst me, and neither I nr my advisr had any cnnectins t Pland.
Relying n Ggle t translate lab websites, I began t send cld emails. When my eventual hst respnded, eager t cllabrate, I was thrilled. I suddenly felt the pssibilities fr my research career were endless and glbal.
I was the first visiting schlar my research grup had hsted frm the United States, and my Plish clleagues were curius abut what brught me t their cuntry. This led t many fruitful discussins abut the similarities and differences in hw science is cnducted acrss cultures. Fr example, much f the funding in Pland is awarded t teams rather than individuals. The system prmtes crss-disciplinary (跨学科的) cperatins acrss the cuntry, which in turn shapes hw scientists design and carry ut studies.
I learned as much abut the histry and culture in Central and Eastern Eurpe as I did scientifically. Clleagues related firsthand accunts abut challenges the regin faced during the Cld War. Many labratries had limited resurces, and they rarely published their research in English. Thse cnditins helped shape research n antimicrbial treatment int bacteriphage and antibitics, and Pland remain leaders in the frmer t this day.
My cultural immersin made me a better researcher. I nw see crss-cultural cperatins as a way t vercme cmmunicatin barriers that can blck prgress in science. By stepping utside my cmfrt zne, I gained the cnfidence t navigate my research in new directins that I might have therwise bxed myself ut f.

A. He became an expert in Cld War histry.
B. He had access t crss-disciplinary cperatins.
C. He btained scientific knwledge and a glbal perspective.
D. He secured individual funding fr future research prjects.
6. Which wrds best describe the authr?
A. Helpful and determined.

An IT cmpany frm Finland has develped a new fnt (字体) which uses machine learning t rewrite bad language int kinder wrds.
Mre than a third f bullying takes place nline, and the numbers are n the rise, accrding t a reprt by the United Natins’ educatinal rganizatin UNESCO. As users try t write hurtful English wrds, the fnt will autmatically replace them.

Sentences such as “yu are ugly” is replaced with “yu are nt traditinally beautiful” while rude wrds are blurred cmpletely. The cmpany says it is the first example where a blur has been used as a symbl in a fnt package. Racial slurs (种族歧视语) are replaced with the racial grup the slur is related t, rather than blurring the wrd entirely.
The vcabulary f the fnt was c-created with teenagers frm Finland. The fnt’s library f wrds was chsen t include language frm different rigins, religins, and wrld views, and will make adjustments as mre peple and businesses use it. In the future, TietEVRY suggests that machine learning culd be used t teach the fnt t understand hw language is used. Plite Type can be nw dwnladed and used fr free.
“We want bullies t rethink the wrds they use and the actual meaning behind them,” said Kia Haring, glbal head f cmmunicatin and sustainability at TietEVRY. “I hpe that ur cause acts as a wake-up call fr all audiences t cnsider hw bullying culd be handled.”

One prmising technlgy — Electr-agriculture — enables plants t grw withut sunlight by using electricity t transfrm carbn dixide and water int nutrients.
The prcess, develped by Prfessr Feng Jia’s team, invlves tw key steps: first transfrming CO₂ int CO, then turning it int acetate (醋酸盐) — a substance plants can use fr grwth. This breakthrugh allws crps t develp independently f phtsynthesis (光合作用) . Electr-agriculture systems are designed as multi-stry buildings. Slar panels n the rf generate electricity fr the nutrient prductin prcess, while plants grw n lwer flrs. Early experiments have successfully grwn mushrms and algae, with current trials fcusing n vegetables like lettuce and tmates.
One prmising applicatin is its ptential t ease fd insecurity, particularly in regins where traditinal agriculture fails. “We hpe the technlgy can be emplyed in lcatins where traditinal agriculture is very difficult,” Jia says. “Particularly cncerning is climate change —places that used t be gd land fr grwing things may nt be pssible in the future, s this may becme a way t stabilize the fd supply t the wrld.”
But sme experts are skeptical f Electr-agriculture’s ability t be a large-scale slutin t fd insecurity. Accrding t Harld van Es, an expert n sil and water management at Crnell University, the effectiveness f this technlgy is “up in the air.” “Des it actually slve a prblem, r is it just a nvel way f grwing plants?” he asks. “It’s nt ging t slve the glbal fd shrtage issues because it’s t cmplex and prbably t inefficient frm a financial perspective. “In fact, the technlgy requires enrmus amunts f energy: feeding the entire U.S. ppulatin using Electr-agriculture wuld require five times the current electricity cnsumptin f the entire U.S.. What’s mre, many crps als require genetic adjustments t effectively use acetate. Additinally, public acceptance f fd grwn this way remains uncertain.
Despite the challenges, researchers remain ptimistic abut the future f Electr-agriculture. As Jia and his team cntinue t imprve the technlgy, they are hpeful that within the next tw years, they will achieve “significant develpment in the field”.
12. What is ne majr advantage f Electr-agriculture mentined in the text?
A. It replaces traditinal farming with lwer csts.
B. It remves the need fr carbn dixide in plant grwth.
C. It sustains crp grwth withut relying n phtsynthesis.
D. It prduces higher yields than existing agricultural methd.
13. Which challenge is NOT mentined fr Electr-agriculture?
A. The crps need genetic adjustment.
B. The crps culd becme less nutritius.
C. The public may resist this grwing methd.
D. The system requires substantial pwer demand.
14. What des the underlined phrase “up in the air” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Already prven.B. Ptentially prmising.
C. Widely accepted.D. Still undecided.
15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
