Fd serves as a frm f cmmunicatin in tw fundamental ways. Sharing bread r ther fds is a cmmn human traditin that can prmte unity and trust. Fd can als have a specific meaning, and play a significant rle in a family r culture’s celebratins r traditins. The fds
we eat — and when and hw we eat them — are ften unique t a particular culture r may even differ between rural and urban areas within ne cuntry.
Sharing bread, whether during a special ccasin r at the family dinner table, is a cmmn symbl f tgetherness. Many cultures als celebrate birthdays and marriages with cakes that are cut and shared amng the guests. Early frms f cake were simply a kind f bread, s this traditin has its rts in the custm f sharing bread. It is the act f sharing rather than the fd itself that
      strengthens the bnd between peple.
Fd als plays an imprtant rle in many New Year celebratins. In the suthern United
States, pieces f crn bread represent blcks f gld fr prsperity in the New Year. In Greece,
peple share a special cake called vasilpita. A cin is put int the cake, which signifies success in the New Year fr the persn wh receives it.
Many cultures have ceremnies t celebrate the birth f a child, and fd can play a
significant rle. In China, when a baby is ne mnth ld, families name and welcme their child in a celebratin that includes giving red-clred eggs t guests. The red clr symblizes gd luck, while the rund shape f eggs represents whleness and family unity. In many cultures, rund
fds such as grapes, bread, and mn cakes are eaten at welcme celebratins t represent family unity.
Nutritin is necessary fr life, s it is nt surprising that fd is such an imprtant part f different cultures arund the wrld. Mre than just a necessity, fd is a bridge that cnnects
peple, carries cultural values and passes dwn traditinal custms frm ne generatin t anther.
8 .Why des sharing cake relate t sharing bread?
A .Bth are ppular at family dinners.

D .It nly appears in New Year celebratins.

As smene wh studies cmmunicatin, I’ve nticed hw sme speakers seemed instantly clearer when they gestured. This made me wnder: D gestures actually make cmmunicatrs
mre effective? The shrt answer is yes, but nly when the gestures visually represent the idea yu’re talking abut. Researchers call these mvements “illustratrs”. When talking abut
distance, yu might spread yur hands apart while saying smething is “farther away”. When
explaining hw tw cncepts relate, yu might bring yur hands tgether while saying “these
ideas fit tgether.” When describing hw the market demand “is ging up and dwn”, yu culd visually shw a wave shape with yur hands.
T study gestures at scale, my team and I analyzed 200, 000 vide segments frm mre
than 2,000 TED talks using AI tls that can detect and classify hand gestures frame by frame. We paired this with cntrlled experiments in which ur study participants evaluated entrepreneurs
      presenting a prduct.
The same pattern f results appeared in bth settings. In the AI-analyzed TED Talk data, illustrative gestures predicted higher audience evaluatins, reflected in mre than 33 millin
nline “likes” f the vides. And in ur experiments, 1,600 participants rated speakers wh used illustrative gestures as mre clear, cmpetent and persuasive.
What I fund is that these gestures give listeners a visual shrtcut t yur meaning. They
make abstract ideas feel mre cncrete, helping listeners build a mental picture f what yu’re saying. This makes the message feel easier t prcess — a phenmenn psychlgists call
“prcessing fluency”. And we fund that when ideas feel easier t grasp, peple tend t see the speaker as mre cmpetent and persuasive.
But nt all gestures help. Mvements that dn’t match the message — like randm waving, fidgeting r pinting t things in the space — ffer n such benefit. In sme cases, they can even distract. A practical methd: Fcus n clarity ver planned gestures. Think abut where yur
hands naturally illustrate what yu’re saying — emphasizing size, directin r emtin — and let them mve with purpse.
12 .Which is TRUE abut illustrative gestures?
A .They can explain abstract ideas.
B .They are randm hand mvements.
C .They are designed t attract audiences.
D .They wrk better when speakers express ideas.
13 .What can be inferred frm the study?
A .AI is key t reliable research results.
B .Speakers’ abilities depend n gestures.
C .Mre gestures lead t mre nline likes.
D .Gestures influence peple’s judgment f speakers’ perfrmance.
14 .What is the authr’s attitude t unmatched gestures?
      A .Supprtive. B .Uncaring. C .Negative. D .Dubtful.
15 .What is the text mainly abut?
A .Secrets f giving excellent TED talks.
B .Ways t imprve cmmunicatin skills.
C .Research n abstract and cncrete ideas.
      D .Effects f illustrative gestures n cmmunicatin.
