A big change came during the Nrthern Sng Dynasty. A man named Bi Sheng invented mvable type arund 1040 AD. A schlar named Shen Ku wrte dwn hw Bi Sheng did it.
First, Bi Sheng made individual characters. He used sticky clay t frm each character and then baked it hard with fire. He made many characters and stred them in an rganized way, srted by rhyme s they were easy t find later.
T print, he used an irn frame n an irn plate. He spread a mix f pine resin, wax, and paper ashes n the plate. Then, he picked the clay characters he needed and placed them in the frame. When the frame was full, he heated the plate. The heat sftened the mix. He pressed a flat bard n tp t make all the characters level. After it cled, the mix became hard and held the characters tightly. Then, he culd put ink n them and print.
The best part f this system was that the characters culd be reused. After printing, he heated the plate again. The mix sftened, and he culd take the characters apart, clean them, and use them again fr a different bk. This was much better than blck printing, where each new page needed a new wden bard. Bi Sheng's inventin made printing faster and cheaper.
Hwever, the Chinese language has thusands f different characters. Making and string s many clay types was a lt f wrk. Because f this, wdblck printing was still used mre ften in China fr a lng time.
