She als vlunteered t wrk with a guardian at a nature center at Rck Creek Park in Washingtn D. C. where she culd care fr their animals. She gained a new understanding f science and its impact n the natural wrld during a high schl curse n the Chesapeake Bay. These pprtunities were life-changing fr Davis.
“The leader f that wrkshp and the guardian I wrked with pened the dr t this idea that ne culd find wrk in the envirnmental field,” she said. “We went n field trips and we did rle playing, addressing different issues f the Bay. We made a gumb (秋葵汤): we studied all the rganisms and f curse nne f the girls wuld eat it, but I saw hw ne culd engage (参与) deeply and study the envirnment. It kind f fired up this interest fr me,” she said.
When she went t cllege, she started studying science, but was sn drawn tward anther degree — ne in televisin and radi prductin. It was during a traineeship in Scripps Institutin f Oceangraphy’s lab that she wuld see where her interests lay.
“I had a strng interest in strytelling, but the seed f science remained,” she said. “There were s many stries. I was cnstantly drawn t the human part f the research prcess and I think that had an influence n where I ended up.”
She went n t get a Ph.D. in eclgy and mved int science educatin t cmbine the elements f strytelling int the wrk she did. “My research is mainly fcused n engaging the public in science, invlving nn-scientists in the science prcess, and inspiring in them that same excitement I felt when I was yunger,” she. said.
4. What can be learned abut Davis’s experiences?
A. She vlunteered t wrk as a guardian.B. She taught vet science at the Natinal Z

A sft electrnic skin culd allw peple with prstheses (假肢) t sense pressure and temperature, helping them t mre easily interact with their surrundings.
Thin and stretchable like regular skin, the electrnic skin sticks t surfaces. It cntains sensrs t measure the utside temperature and pressure, which it sends t an implanted electrde (电极) in the brain as electrical signals. These signals vary in frequency t help the brain tell the difference between feelings like a sfter tuch and a firm handshake, a strawberry and an apple, r ht and cld.
It was created by researchers frm Stanfrd University, wh implanted sft e-skin electrdes int the brains f mice and recrded electrical signals frm the animals’ mtr crtex (大脑皮层). The animals mved their legs in respnse t different pressure levels the e-skin culd discver. That shws it wrks like ur natural sense f tuch.
The team says the wrk culd lead t better prsthetics and culd help create rbts that can feel human-like emtins. “Our dream is t make a whle hand where we have multiple sensrs that can sense pressure, strain and temperature,” says Zhenan Ba, a chemical engineering prfessr at Stanfrd University. “Then we will be able t prvide a true kind f feeling.”
The lack f sensry feedback is ne f the main reasns peple stp wearing a prsthesis, as it can leave users feeling upset. Althugh previus e-skins have used sft sensrs t sense tuch, they were frced t rely n inflexible external parts t change them int measurable electrical signals. Such systems tend t hld back peple frm mving freely. This new e-skin is entirely sft, which culd help avid that prblem.
“The fact that the e-skin is thin and sft and uses little pwer makes it an exciting ptin fr peple wrking in the prsthetics field,” says Silvestr Micera, a medical prfessr in Switzerland. “We have t see it built int a real prsthesis. That’s clearly the next step.”
8. What is the functin f the sensrs in the e-skin?
A. T help the e-skin stick t skinB. T cntrl mvement f prstheses
C. T measure and send sensry signals.D. T prvide pwer fr brain electrdes.
9. What des the authr imply in paragraph 4?
A. Rbtic hands tend t respnd slwly.B. E-skin will need n pwer in the future.
C. Rbtic prducts will hit the market sn.D. Rbts with human-like emtins are achievable.
10. What is a disadvantage f traditinal e-skin?
A. It is f high risk.B. It receives weak signals.
C. It is f lw quality.D. It limits free physical activity.
11. What d experts think f e-skin’s future?
A. Prmising.B. Challenging.C. Uncertain.D. Risky.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. D 11. A

It seems cmmn that different peple, based n their persnalities, preferences and persnal histries f listening t particular music, will have different experiences when enjying a particular piece f music. Their attentin t varius details will vary and they might like different things abut it.
But Levitin and his teammates shwed in a Eurpean Jurnal f Neurscience study that, frm the perspective f the brain, there may be mre similarities amng music listeners. “Despite ur unique habits in listening, the brain experiences music in a very cnsistent (一致的) fashin acrss participants (参与者).” said Daniel Abrams, lead authr at Stanfrd University Schl f Medicine.
Seventeen participants wh had little r n music training tk part in this study. Participants listened t fur symphnies by cmpser William Byce. The researchers chse fur symphnies because they reflect Western music but were likely t be unfamiliar t participants.
Amng participants, the researchers fund cnsistent activities. in several key brain areas, and similar brain activity patterns in different peple wh listen t the same music. This suggests that the participants feel the music the same way. In additin, despite persnal differences, there’s a level n which they share a cmmn experience.
One resulting thery is that these brain areas are invlved in hlding particular parts f a sng. such as the tune, in the mind while the rest f the piece f music plays n. The results als reflect the pwer f music t bring peple tgether.
“It’s nt ur nature t push urselves int a crwd f 20,000 peple, but fr a Muse cncert r a Radihead cncert we’ll d it,” Levitin said. “There’s this bnding frce that cmes frm the music, and we dn’t get that frm ther things.”
Further research will cmpare hw individuals with healthy brains differ frm peple with brain disrders in their musical listening. “The methds that we’ve used can be applied t understand hw the brain tracks sund ver time,” Abrams said.
12. What is a cmmn belief abut listening t music?
A. Peple pay mre attentin t details.B. Music types shape listening experiences.
C. Persnal histries determine music habitsD. Appreciatin f music varies amng individuals.
13. What is paragraph 3 f the text mainly abut?
A. The causes f the research.B. The purpse f the research.
C. The prcess f the research.D. The findings f the research.
14. What des the example f cncerts in paragraph 6 indicate?
A. Music encurages peple t mve n.B. Music brings shared feelings amng peple
C. Music changes peple’s nature fr the better.D. Music has the pwer t cntrl peple’s lives.
15. What can we knw abut further research?
A. It will cnsider health factrs first.
B. It will fcus n new trends f music.
C. It will apply ld methds t cure brain disrders.
D. It will cmpare hw different brains respnd t music.
