Why d sme peple keep making harmful chices, even when the utcmes are bvius? A new study by UNSW Sydney’s Dr Bressel fund that fr a small grup, the issue isn’t lack f mtivatin r ability, but rather a subtle (微妙的) but persistent failure t cnnect their actins
      with its cnsequences.
The paper, published recently in Nature Cmmunicatins Psychlgy, details an nline
learning game where participants were asked t click between tw planets fr rewards r t avid punishment. Researchers bserved three behaviural types: Sensitives (avid bad chices),
Unawares (adjust strategies after being tld their errrs) and Cmpulsives (still make wrng
chices even after learning their mistakes). “Sme peple dn’t learn frm experience. Even when mtivated t avid harm, they fail t see their behaviur causes prblems,” said Dr Bressel.
This study fllwed past research, which nly fcused n Australian psychlgy students, but had key differences: 267 participants frm 24 cuntries (including ver 50-year-lds),
six-mnth fllw-ups, and pst-game surveys n their chices. The same behaviural prfiles
emerged acrss cultures and ages. In Australian studies, 35% were Sensitives, 41% Unawares,
23% Cmpulsives; in the new study, 26% Sensitives, 47% Unawares, 27% Cmpulsives. Dr
Bressel linked mre Cmpulsives t lder participants, as cgnitive (认知的) flexibility declines with age. Interestingly, when participants were invited back t play the same game six mnths
later, mst shwed the same behaviural prfile. “That was striking,” said Bressel. “These aren’t just randm mistakes. They’re almst like persnality types. This is nt t say they’re fixed, just that they may require interventin t break.” Researchers cnfirmed Cmpulsives’ chices
weren’t habits: participants culd explain their wrng chices. This pints t a deeper issue — a failure t integrate new knwledge t minimise bad utcmes.
Dr Bressel nted real life is mre cmplex than the game, but the pattern f ignring
experience and infrmatin matches cmpulsry behaviurs. The research has imprtant
implicatins fr public health messaging. Many campaigns rely n prviding infrmatin — abut smking, drinking r financial risks — with the assumptin that peple will act n it. But this
study suggests that fr sme, infrmatin alne isn’t enugh. “Standard infrmatin campaigns wrk fr mst — but nt fr everyne,” Dr Bressel said. “Fr cmpulsive individuals, we may need different interventin.”
12 .What were participants expected t d in the nline learning game?
A .Make chices. B .Win awards. C .Observe behaviur. D .Identify errrs.
13 .What is a striking finding f the new study?
A .Cgnitin declines with age. B .Unawares accunt fr the largest.
C .Behaviural patterns are cnsistent. D .Mistakes influence persnality types.
14 .What des the authr suggest fr public health campaigns?
A .Increasing lecture frequency. B .Reviewing behaviural errrs.
C .Develping tailred strategies. D .Enhancing infrmatin accuracy.
15 .Which is the best title fr the text?
A .Learning Risks, Behaving Safer. B .Knwing Better, Ding Wrse.
C .Recgnizing Habits, Acting Well. D .Understanding Rules, Breaking All.

As an enthusiastic reader, I’ve always believed that the key t understanding the wrld lies in the pages f a bk. 16 They intrduce us t characters wh feel as real as the peple
arund us. This cnnectin between readers and the text is what makes literature s pwerful, and it’s why I value my persnal library. It’s a cllectin that reflects my jurney thrugh the wrld f wrds.
My library is nt vast, but each bk is carefully chsen. I have a mix f types in my

Amng my favurites are the wrks f Jane Austen and Gerge Orwell. Austen's sharp
bservatins n sciety and relatinships are timeless. Her characters are imperfect yet charming. Orwell, n the ther hand, ffers a stark (冷峻的) view f the wrld 18 Bth authrs,
thugh different in style, have taught me invaluable lessns abut humanity.

make a difference. These stries encurage me t reflect n my wn life and what I wish t leave behind.
My library is a reflectin f wh I am. It’s a sign f my lve f learning and my desire t understand the wrld. Each bk is a stepping stne n my jurney f discvery. They are
cmpanins in lneliness and guides in times f uncertainty. 20
