Bm! The crash was fllwed by a deafening explsin as a pump and the vehicle erupted int flames. Liu was frightened. But he rushed ut quickly. If the fire spread t the ther pumps,
the apartment building next t the gas statin culd be in danger. The first thing Liu did was shut ff the pumps by cutting ff their electrical supply. Then Liu went int rescue mde.
Since the fire was clser t the driver’s side, he entered the car thrugh the passenger-side dr. He instantly recgnized the driver, wh regularly stpped in fr supplies, pet fd, and a
chat. He quickly grasped the frightened wman’s arm and dragged her ut f the vehicle. They
escaped with a few minr burns, but destructin t the gas statin was ttal. It wasn’t the fire that cncerned him s much. “I was scared f the explsin that might happen,” said Liu.
By the time firefighters arrived, the cnvenience stre had been n fire. Firefighters
remained n scene fr mre than 10 hurs. Liu lst everything. Still, Liu held n anger fr the

Peple’s nses get clder when they’re feeling stressed, accrding t a new study.
Researchers frm the University f Sussex, in England, lked at the temperature f peple’s faces t see ifit changed when they were nervus r under pressure.
Prfessr Gillian Frrester, wh studies brains and behaviur at the University f Sussex,
led the study. She recrded 29 peple with a thermal imaging camera (热成像摄像机) t see what happened when they were stressed. First, the vlunteers were expsed t white nise fr five
minutes. Then they had t perfrm tw tasks in frnt f a silent grup f strangers. They had t give an unplanned presentatin and they had t d maths in their head and say their answers ut lud.
Frm the results f the study, it was fund that peple’s nse temperature drpped by
between 3℃ and 6℃ when they were under pressure. This is because the bld in their faces ges t their ears and eyes, which are imprtant senses fr detecting danger. The researchers were able t see the change in bld flw n the thermal imaging camera because places that were warmer had mre bld. Once the stress was ver, the bld in peple’s faces returned t where it usually was within a few minutes. Frrester tld the BBC that the length f time it takes smene’s nse t recver its temperature culd be a measure f hw well they manage their stress.
Humans aren’t the nly nes wh culd benefit frm this knwledge. Stress als changes the bld flw in the faces f animals that are clsely related t humans, such as chimpanzees, a kind f small ape (猿). Researchers hpe that thermal imaging cameras culd help them t lk after rescued animals in ape reserves.
“They can’t say hw they’re feeling and they can be quite gd at masking hw they’re
feeling,” Marlane Paisley, wh studies ape well-being at the University f Sussex, tld the BBC.
The temperature f an ape’s face culd help peple understand hw they are feeling and hw t make them feel better t.
8 .What did the vlunteers d during the experiment?
A .They gave a theme-specific presentatin. B .They talked with a grup f strangers.
C .They discussed maths prblems alud. D .They listened t white nise fr a while.
9 .What makes the nse temperature drp under pressure?
A .Less bld flws t the nse. B .Peple breathe mre slwly.
C .The nse prduces mre sweat. D .The brain sends less xygen t the face.
10 .Why d researchers plan t use thermal imaging cameras n apes?
A .T check their bdy temperature. B .T examine their bld flw changes.
C.T help figure ut their emtinal states. D.T study hw stress influences their behavirs.
11 .What is the main idea f the text?
A .Nervus apes need care. B .Nses becme cld easily.
C .Nses reveal pressure levels. D .Stress cls humans’ bdies.

In trpical regins such as the Amazn and Panama, the ppulatins f sme birds have fallen by as much as 90 percent even in mstly untuched rainfrests, and it seems that mre
intense heat extremes are the main factr behind the decline.
Between 1950 and 2020, the intensificatin f heat extremes led t a fall f between 25% and 38% in the ppulatin f land-dwelling (陆栖的) birds in the trpics, accrding t a study by Maximilian Ktz at the Barcelna Supercmputing Center and his c-wrkers.
The team hasn’t yet used these results t extraplate what will happen as the planet cntinues t heat up, but “maybe it’s nt a gdlking picture,” says Ktz.
Ktz and his c-wrkers started with data n land-dwelling bird ppulatins arund the
wrld frm the Living Planet Database. They then gt data n habitat destructin frm the Hyde Database f the Glbal Envirnment and histrical weather and climate data frm the Eurpean
Centre fr Mediumrange Weather Frecasts. They cmpared all the data t find cnnectins that might explain the fall in bird ppulatin. In the mid-latitudes (中纬度) between 21° and 43° nrth r suth, habitat destructin was the main factr, their findings suggest. “But in the trpics, heat extremes were the biggest factr. In these regins, birds are ften living near the limits f their
tlerance and will die if the temperature is beynd the limits,” says Ktz.
They als investigated the extent t which the intensificatin in heat extremes is due t
human-caused glbal warming. This allwed them t estimate the decline in bird ppulatin that results frm climate change.
“Studies like this have lng been used t assess the link between extreme weather and
climate change, but,” says Ktz, “as far as I knw, this study is the first t use them t lk at
eclgical impacts in this way.” He admits that the data n bird ppulatin is far frm cmplete, especially in trpical regins. If anything, the shrtage f such data wuld make us judge the
impacts t be less severe than they actually are.
12 .What des the underlined wrd “extraplate” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A .Chse. B .Frecast. C .Stimulate. D .Witness
13 .What mainly leads t the decline in bird ppulatin in mid-latitudes?
A .Intense heat. B.Habitat lss. C.Lack f fd surces. D.Human-caused pllutin.
14 .What can we infer frm Ktz’s statement in the last paragraph?
A .The effects are underrated due t data gaps. B .Trpical bird decline was less than recrded.
C .The study is the first t fcus n extreme weather. D .Climate change has limited impacts n
trpical birds.
15 .What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.Birds Disappear with Rainfrest Lss B.Scientists Use Databases in Wildlife Tracking
C .Habitat Destructin Threatens Birds Severely D .Extreme Heat Is Driving Decline in Trpical Birds
