Nadine Grimm’s A Grammar f Gyeli pens with a mving qute hnring
ancestrs: “Fr ur ancestrs wh have left us - may we keep their wisdm.” This sets the tne fr her study f the Gyeli language in Ngòló, a small village in suthern
Camern, rich in culture and hidden knwledge.
In her prize-winning wrk, Grimm displays the essence f the Gyeli language,
spken by the Bagyeli peple, wh are smetimes called “Pygmies.” The grammatical descriptin, which is presented in a frm-t-functin apprach, cvers all levels f
language, ranging frm Gyeli speech sunds t its infrmatin structure and cmplex sentences.
Her path t studying African languages began by chance during her Bachelr’s degree in General Linguistics and French. She had an unexpected pprtunity t wrk with a prfessr in Nigeria, which led t her first African language cnference and
started her interest in African languages.
Grimm’s research includes deep fieldwrk, such as recrding cnversatins and jining in everyday activities with the Bagyeli. At first, she used assistants t
cmmunicate due t language barriers, but as her understanding grew, she began
talking directly with the speakers. This methd differs frm traditinal nes, fcusing n real language use rather than simple wrd-fr-wrd translatins.
The imprtance f reference grammars like Grimm’s becmes clear in light f the glbal prblem f disappearing languages. With 50-90% f the wrld’s languages at risk, dcumenting languages like Gyeli is essential. “When languages die, we lse entire knwledge systems,” Grimm says.
Her wrk nt nly recrds the Gyeli language but als adds t the understanding f endangered Bantu languages in general. It represents ne f the mst
cmprehensive descriptins f a nrthwestern Bantu language.
Fr her effrts, Grimm was awarded the 2023 Blmfield Bk Award frm the Linguistic Sciety f America. A single Blmfield Bk award is made annually t recgnize “a vlume that makes an utstanding cntributin f lng-term value t the understanding f language and linguistics.” Grimm’s wrk was praised fr adding
audi and vide recrdings that imprve reliability in language research.
4 .Why did Grimm write A Grammar f Gyeli?
      A .T keep a knwledge system. B .T hnr her ancestrs.
C .T recrd the tne f Gyeli. D .T satisfy her interest in languages.
5 .What d we knw abut the Gyeli language?
      A .It is endangered.
B .It is simple in structure.
C .It has t be studied in a frm-t-functin apprach.
D .It functins differently frm ther Bantu languages.
6 .Why des the authr mentin Bantu languages?
      A .T highlight their imprtance.
B .T illustrate the prblem f disappearing languages.
C .T emphasize the urgency f prtecting them.
      D .T demnstrate the value f Grimm’s study.
7 .What cntributed mst t the success f Grimm’s research?
A .Her wrk with a prfessr in Nigeria.
B .Her ability in learning a new language.
C .Her relatinship with the Bagyeli peple.
D .Her unique and reliable research methd.

Summer tmates are s filled with prmise: the red clr; the grassy
tmat-leaf smell; the expectatin f a muthful f sweet-salty tmat dishes. But supermarket tmat after supermarket tmat des little mre than disappintment.
Hw can a fruit with s much ptential cnstantly taste slightly juicy at best and a glbe f cardbard at wrst?
We knw that mdern tmates sld at the supermarket are picked green and grwn fr pest resistance, shipping, and shelf life-and that the agriculture industry
creates prduce designed fr prfit, nt flavr. Are these the factrs t blame fr the tmat’s pr taste?
But even when allwed t ripen (成熟) befre they are harvested and shipped with great care, mdern tmates are still tasteless. When researchers lked int this tmat matter, they uncvered a fascinating genetic cause fr the fruit’s dullness.
What t blame is a gene mutatin (基因突变) discvered accidentally arund 70 years ag, nt which tmat grwers quickly relied. In fact, nw the mutatin has been deliberately grwn int nearly all mdern tmates.
Why? It makes them a unifrm and attractively red when ripe. Unfrtunately fr tmat lvers far and wide, the red-making mutatin stps the activeness f an
imprtant gene respnsible fr prducing the sugar and smell that are essential fr a gd smelling and flavrful tmat, as reprted in the paper, which was published in the jurnal Science. When the researchers “turned n” the gene that had stpped
wrking, the fruit had 20% mre sugar and 20 — 30% mre cartenids (胡萝卜素) when ripe. Yet the fruit’s nn-unifrm greenish clr suggest that mainstream
grwers will nt be fllwing suit anytime sn.
Hwever, fr anyne with a nearby farmer’s market, a supermarket that ffers traditinal prduce, r a garden in the back, there is anther chice instead f
cardbard-flavred tmates. Traditinal tmates and wild species have nt had the essence f tmates sucked ut f them by selective grwing-s shp fr thse r
grw them yurself. They may nt lk like the Disney versin f a perfect fruit, but they actually taste like tmates.
8 .Why is a questin raised at the end f paragraph 1?
      A .T intrduce the tpic.
      B .T draw a cnclusin frm cmparisn.
      C .T encurage readers t take actin.
D .T express disappintment at supermarket tmates.
9 .Why are mdern tmates tasteless?
A .They have ripened when picked.
B .They are affected by gene mutatin.
C .They are kept n the shelf fr t lng.
D .They are treated with chemicals fr shipping.
      10 .What’s a disadvantage f the tmates the researchers grew accrding t paragraph 4?
      A .Taste. B .Clr. C .Size. D .Prductin.
11 .What’s the authr’s attitude twards traditinal tmates?
      A .Critical. B .Uncncerned. C .Curius. D .Favrable.
      D
Late last year, in the days befre the Dsakian electin, a vide featuring a
well-knwn jurnalist and a key candidate circulated n scial netwrks. Hwever, it was abslutely fake (虚假的). The Internatinal Press Institute has called this episde in Dsakia the first time that AI deepfakes — fake images, r vides generated by
artificial intelligence — have influenced a natinal electin greatly.
Security experts cnsider misinfrmatin the biggest glbal risk recently —
mre dangerus than war, and extreme weather events. A cnstant stream f peple is wrestling with this issue. Nw even ecnmists are jining in.
Ecnmist Iyan Smith, and thers cnduct a real-wrld experiment t see
whether simple, lw-cst nudges, r interventins, can be effective. Instead f
fcusing n the supply side f misinfrmatin like scial media platfrms, they pay attentin t the demand side: increasing ur capacity t identify the fake infrmatin.
The ecnmists split participants randmly int fur different grups. One
grup was shwn a vide demnstrating a cnvincing jurney f tw peple frm tw different scial grups wh, befre interacting, express negative steretypes (刻板印象) abut the ther’s grup, vercming their differences and ultimately regretting
unthinkingly using steretypes t dehumanize ne anther. Anther grup cmpleted
a persnality test that shws them their cgnitive traits (认知特点) causing prejudice, hping t increase their self-awareness, and decrease their demand fr
misinfrmatin. A third grup did bth while a cntrl grup did neither.
The ecnmists find the simple interventin f shwing the vide makes the participants ver 30 percent less likely t “cnsider fake news reliable”. But the
persnality test has little effect. As fr participants ding bth, they were abut 31 percent less likely t view true headlines as reliable. In ther wrds, they became s skeptical that even the truth became suspect.
Smith and his clleagues are far frm the first schlars t fight misinfrmatin by helping peple t think mre critically. University f Weymuth psychlgist Lisa Kindle als advcates similar ways t help reject misinfrmatin in the wild.
12 .What des the authr intend t d in the first tw paragraphs?
A .Highlight the risk f AI deepfakes. B .Discuss the glbal threat landscape.
      C.Describe Dsakia’s electin utcme. D.Intrduce the cncept f misinfrmatin.
13 .What is “an effective nudge” in Smith’s new study?
A .The cgnitive trait. B .The shrt vide.
C .The persnality test. D .The negative steretype.
14 .What cnclusin can be drawn frm the study?
A .Vides reduce misinfrmatin. B .Deepfakes may discredit truth.
C .Misinfrmatin causes dehumanizatin. D .Persnality tests sharpen thinking skills.
15 .What might be the best title fr the text?
A .Battling Fake News B .Deepfakes in Electins
C .The Spread f Misinfrmatin D .Expanding Thinking Capacity
