W: Hey Tm, I just learned that peple drive n the left in England. It’s ttally
different frm America. Why d these tw cuntries have such ppsite driving
habits?
M: Oh, it’s mainly because f histry. In medieval England, knights usually held
swrds with their right hands. Riding n the left let them prtect themselves frm
enemies easily. Later, this habit became a law and never changed.
W: That makes sense! Then why des America drive n the right? Wasn’t it a British
clny?
M: Exactly. But after gaining independence, America wanted t break away frm
British traditins. Besides, mst immigrants were frm cuntries like France and
Germany, where right-hand driving was cmmn. What’s mre, right-hand driving
was mre cnvenient fr wagn drivers.
W: I see! S histry and immigratin really shaped these habits. By the way, if I
travel t England, I mustn’t drive n the right, right?
M: Yu’re abslutely right! It’s against the traffic rules and super dangerus. Als,
pay attentin t rad signs—they’re designed fr left-hand traffic.
W: Thanks fr the tips. I’ll keep that in mind if I ever visit there.
