There, suspended beneath the glimmering (闪着微光) surface, I remembered it all — my lve f diving, swimming, rivers and lakes. I knew what it was like again: t be free and fully present in my wn skin.
Thugh I’ve always lved the water, I had spent seven years prir t that day staying away frm mments like this ne. I was afraid. Struggling fr a lng time with lng-term skin cnditins, unhelpful treatments and the pressures f teenage girls’ appearance, I had becme entirely reliant n my makeup. I needed ttal cntrl ver hw I lked, and ging swimming meant washing this cntrl away. My bare face and natural appearance were nt smething I identified with. I hated it, deeply, thugh I wished mre than anything that I didn’t.
But thse 10 minutes f cntentment I flated within were fuel fr the next chapter f my life. Suddenly, it didn’t matter hw I did it. Whether thrugh medicatin r mental attitude, I wuld find a way t have the kind f life that allwed me t dive int the water.
That day was the beginning f a slw but determined jurney back t my wn bdy — a slw unlearning f my deep self-cnsciusness. Life didn’t change in a heartbeat: I returned t the shre with all the same fears, but I clthed myself in a new determinatin t change things. I felt the tide turn.
Reflecting n this mment again tday, it seems strange t think that ging bare-faced n an empty beach was such a challenge. But this is exactly the perspective I had nce dreamed f reaching. I d my best never t take fr granted this freedm I have fund. I will sink under the surface f the water, embracing that swell f fear and jy and liberatin.

Twenty years ag my husband, Mark, brke his left ankle and was in a cast fr nearly tw mnths. Last year he brke the ther ankle. But this time, after surgery, his dctr surprised us by instructing Mark t walk n it tw weeks later.
It turns ut the standard advice t stay ff a brken leg bne fr at least six weeks is based less n scientific evidence and mre n cultural cautin — physicians like t play it safe. But nw studies shw that cmplicatins (并发症) are n mre likely with early weight-bearing than with a lng delay. Except in a few cmplex cases, walking arund earlier helps brken bnes heal.
If yu are fully immbilized, “yu cme ut f the cast with a weak leg that takes frever t vercme,” says Alex Trmpeter f St. Gerge’s University f Lndn. “The rate at which yu lse muscle mass is far faster than the rate at which yu gain it.” Yu’re slw t build bne, t. Cnsider astrnauts. After six mnths in zer gravity at the Internatinal Space Statin, they lse 10 percent f their bne density, and t cunteract that lss they d exercises that apprximate bearing weight.
When a bne breaks, surgery is usually perfrmed — first a “reductin” t restre the pieces f bne t the right psitin and then “fixatin” t hld them in place. The bne then heals naturally by frming callus (骨痂), which then turns int bne. The right amunt f lad is critical t this prcess. T little results in n callus; t much prevents the brken pieces frm grwing tgether again. Surgical implants hld the bne in place until that prcess is cmplete.
A randmized cntrlled trial published in The Lancet in 2024 fund that early weight-bearing after tw weeks psed n greater risk than waiting six weeks and imprved functin. “Surgens just needed a push,” says Brethertn, wh led the study. He hpes this evidence “gives them that cnfidence”.
As fr my husband, within tw mnths, the pint at which he was just cming ut f a cast last time, his scar was fully healed, and he was walking nrmally again.

A. Misaligned bnes and weakened bnes.
B. A slwer recvery and structural weakness.
C. Increased injuries and weaker stability.
D. Delayed bne grwth and displaced bnes.
10. What des Brethertn suggest surgens d?
A. Avid unnecessary risks.B. Bst patients’ cnfidence.
C. Revise their clinical practices.D. Hld mre expert cnsultatins.
11. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Hw Callus Speeds up Bne HealingB. Healing Brken Legs Faster
C. Imprving Surgery fr Bne BreaksD. Why Exercises Prevent Bne Lss
D
Since the 1950s, sme 9.2 billin tnnes f plastic have been prduced glbally, f which nly abut 10% has ever been recycled. Yet envirnmentally cnscius cmpanies and cnsumers cntinue t lk t recycling as a way t ease the plastic prblem. Manufacturing giants claim t be cmmitted t making mre f their prducts and packaging frm recycled materials. Hwever, this cnfidence masks (掩饰) a cmplex web f issues arund plastic recycling. Recycling rates remain extremely lw and critics argue that we shuld lk at alternative ways t tackle plastic pllutin.
While many plastics have the ptential t be recycled, mst are nt because the prcess is cstly, cmplicated and the resulting prduct f a lwer quality than the riginal. Despite rising demand fr recycled plastic, few waste cmpanies turn a prfit. Part f this is because virgin plastic-linked t il prices - is ften cheaper than recycled plastic, meaning there is little ecnmic incentive t use it. Wrse yet, much f ur plastic waste is difficult t recycle. Lightweight fd packaging, like a mzzarella packet, cntains different plastics, dyes and txic additives (添加剂). This dirty mix means plastic recycled thrugh mechanical methds- the mst cmmn frm- can nly be melted dwn and mulded (浇铸,塑造) again a cuple f times befre it becmes t fragile t be reused. And the nature f the prcess means plastic recycling has a carbn ftprint f its wn.
Given all f these difficulties, envirnmental critics say recycling is nt the slutin-and argue that creating mre prducts frm recycled material t attract envirnmental cnsciusness merely wrsens the prblem. “The slutin is t use less plastic and t stp misleading the public abut the recyclability,” says Enck, president f Beynd Plastics, a US campaign grup with a missin t end single-use plastic. “They shuld stp making false claims abut the recyclability f plastics since they knw mst will either be littered (乱扔) r burned r landfilled (填埋). Using less plastics means shifting t reusable prducts and relying mre n paper, cardbard, glass and metal- -all f which shuld be made frm recycled cntent.”
12. What is an envirnmentally cnscius custmer’s attitude twards recycling plastics?
A Suspicius.B. Favrable.C. Indifferent.D. Disapprving.
13. What des the underlined wrd “incentive” in Paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. mtive.B. issue.C. crisis.D. plicy.
14. What is Paragraph 2 mainly abut?
A. The recycling prcess f plastics.B. Pllutants cntained in recycled plastics.
C. Reasns why users dislike recycled plastics.D. Cntributing factrs t lw plastic recycling rates.
15 What will the envirnmental critics be happy t see accrding t the text?
A. Using metal r glass fd cntainers.B. Littering recycled plastics in a landfill.
C. Prcessing plastics in a mechanical way.D. Launching campaigns t prmte recyclability.

Ten dllars still. Still t much. Frgt it. My sn wuld understand. Time t g back t Westwd. That night, I called my wife, “Did yu get ne f thse maps t the stars? He’s been talking abut nthing else.” This news was hard t ignre. But it was late.
