This was nt just because f examples like that f surströmming. They knew frm past experiments by ther researchers that culture was imprtant in determining which srts f faces peple fund beautiful.
T study hw smell and culture relate, the researchers presented ten smells. These smells varied frm herb t isvaleric acid, the chemical respnsible fr smelly scks. Mre in-between smells, which the team thught might have different pinins, included ctanic acid; and ctenl, an earthy smell fund in many mushrms. The cultures ding the smelling varied widely t, including hunters, farmers and city flk.
All 235 participants were asked t rank smells accrding t pleasantness. Cntrary t previus belief, it was fund that pleasantness rankings were remarkably cnsistent (一致的) regardless f where peple came frm. Even s, while culture didn’t shape perceptins (感知) f smells in the way that it shapes perceptins f faces, the researchers did find an “eye f the behlder” effect. Persnal preference learned frm the utside, as the researchers suggest, accunted fr 54 % f the difference in which smells peple liked.
