      Passage1
There was a time when I was certain I culd never deeply lve an animal. I knw this is 1 t admit. In Britain, an indifference (冷漠) t pets is cnsidered a fault n ne's character.
My wife was als 2 sure that she culd never deeply lve me if I culd nt lve animals. And at the beginning f this year, the risk increased. We were t 3 a cat frm a friend wh had fallen fr a wman wh is allergic (过敏的) t them.
I 4 — but cldly enugh, I felt, t make clear that I wuld nt be respnsible fr the creature's upkeep. I wuld 5 the cst f cat fd, f curse, but like a strict Victrian father I wuld avid 6 entanglement (瓜葛).
Hwever, Hpper-well, I hardly need tell yu that Hpper differs frm ther cats. Eight years ld but slim as a kitten. Green-eyed and white-scked. Entirely independent but in need f human 7 , t, when the md takes her. Like I said — unique.
These last fur mnths have 8 me t spend an unexpected amunt f time with Hpper. In my makeshift ffice, she sleeps beside me, mews at my feet, r leaps nt my back. Thrugh the windw, I watch Hpper stalk (踱方步) thrugh the lng grass, 9 me f a wilder wrld utside.Every mrning feed her; every evening we play with a feather stuck t a stick. It is ur 10 -the nly part f my timetable that has nt been spiled by the crnavirus (冠状病毒). Withut the lckdwn, wuld I have realized the everyday happiness a cat can bring?

      Passage 2
Outside ur htel in H Chi Minh City, Vietnam, a seemingly ancient wman waited beside the dr with her hand utstretched (伸出的). Every day I put my hand in hers as ur eyes met. She never 1 t return my smile, my grasp, and my greeting.
On the last day f ur visit, I fund myself 2 n a busy crner acrss the street frm ur htel. Bicycles and mtrbikes rushed in frnt f me. We had been advised t walk straight thrugh the heavy traffic withut lking right r left. Let them 3 us. But tnight I was by myself and felt 4 t face the stream f vehicles. As I hesitated n the sidewalk, I felt a hand n my elbw and lked dwn t see the smile f my small beggar friend lking up at me. She ndded her head tward the street, indicating that she wuld take me acrss. Tgether, we mved slwly int the chas.
Then we mved n twards the sidewalk, where she pulled my face dwn t hers, kissed me n bth cheeks, and then walked away, still smiling and waving back t me. I had nt given her a single cin. We had 5 smething vastly mre imprtant — a warming f hearts in friendship.
Traveling in prer natins, I have witnessed a variety f ways t deal with beggars. The mst cmmn respnse f turists faced with thse extremely pr peple is t ignre them and fcus their eyes elsewhere. I have seen peple push away an utstretched hand in 6 . A few may hurriedly drp a few cins, and then make a quick getaway in hpes that anther 20 ragged beggars wn’t immediately appear n the 7 .
Fr many reasns, giving mney is nt the best respnse t an utstretched hand. The greatest gift is time and respect. T lk beggars in the eye and smile, thus acknwledging their existence, is a small thing. Putting yur hand int anther’s utstretched hand and grasping it 8 fr a mment is als a small thing. But these are imprtant. Everyne needs 9 , t be seen as wrthy f being 10 , t feel appreciated and lved. And I believe that everyne is wrthy and wrth knwing.

What It Takes t Put Yur Phne Away

The Gergetwn cmputer-science prfessr Cal Newprt argues that we must establish a “philsphy f technlgy use.” He recmmends a mnth-lng digital detx (脱瘾), in which a persn takes a(n) 4 frm all ptinal technlgies. When it’s ver, the digital minimalist (极简主义者) slwly reintrduces these technlgies.
Newprt defines a digital minimalist as smene wh drps “lw-quality activities like mindless phne swiping and halfhearted binge-watching (刷剧).” They are 5 high-value leisure activities such as bard games, bk clubs, and learning t “fix r build smething every week.”
At the beginning f March, I decided t try t fllw Newprt’s advice. I adjusted the hme-cmputer settings t cut my scial media 6 t 15 minutes. And I changed my Freedm settings t 7 Twitter and Instagram altgether. I left my phne in the apartment whenever I walked my dg.
During the first few days f my internet decluttering (清理), I fund myself cmpulsively (强迫性地) checking my unchanged in-bx and already-read text messages—attempting, as if bewitched (着迷的), t see 8 infrmatin there. Sn I gt used t the dull, pleasant blankness. One afternn, I lay n my cuch and felt an influx f mental 9 that was bth disturbing and pleasurable. I didn’t want t learn hw t fix r build anything, r start a bk club. I wanted t experience myself as sft and lse and purpseless.
On the first day f April, I tk stck f my digital experiment. I had nt becme a different, better persn. But I had becme mre 10 f why I use technlgy, and hw it meets my needs. I lsened my hme-cmputer settings n scial media, back t 45 daily minutes. I cnsidered my Freedm parameters, which I had already learned t break, and let them be.
