China’s 5000-year-ld civilizatin has prduced distinctive beliefs, skills, and varius cultural traditins. Chinese architecture (建筑) stands apart frm ther cultures, with “Feng Shui” playing an imprtant rle in deciding traditinal building layuts, whether it is a palace r temple. Chinese culture’s varius sci-cultural, spiritual, climatic, and philsphical aspects all play a rle.
Siheyuan, meaning “quadrangle”, dates back ver 800 years t the perid when Beijing became the capital. A siheyuan typically has three curtyards, thugh small nes may have nly ne curtyard and larger nes may have up t five curtyards. The layut maximizes daylight, prvides prtectin frm nrth winds, reduces street nise and dust, and ffers cmplete privacy, reflecting Chinese cultural values.
General Layut(布局) f Siheyuan
Traditinally, the huse is built alng a nrthwest axis. Zhengfang wuld face the suth and the back is twards the nrth. Inside, a spirit wall may guard the entrance, with servant (佣人) quarters psitined near the frnt gate. An inner gate called Ermen r Chuihuamen separates the first and secnd curtyards. The side huses named Xiangfang traditinally placed married sns in the eastern xiangfang, cnsidered superir, while unmarried daughters lived in the western xiangfang. “Ear rms” called Erfang n either side f the main huse served as children’s r servants’ quarters, r fr strage and cking. Larger siheyuan might include Huzhafang at the back, typically reserved fr unmarried daughters r female servants, prviding mre private areas.
Siheyuan’s cnstructin explains the characteristics f the Chinese peple as well as the strict hierarchical (等级制度的) framewrk f the past. During the imperial (皇帝的) perid, residential buildings were allwed t have just ne strey (层), indicating the emperr’s superir status. These unique structures remain an integral part f Beijing architecture. In ur rapidly changing wrld, understanding traditinal architectural practices like siheyuan is imprtant fr develping lasting design techniques rather than trends that quickly g ut f style.

One Step twards Changing the Wrld
Yu may have heard this stry, but I find that it desn’t hurt t be reminded f it every nce in a while. First, let me tell yu the stry, and then we can talk abut it.
Once upn a time, there was an ld man wh used t g t the cean t d his writing. He had a habit f walking n the beach every mrning befre he began his wrk. Early ne mrning, he was walking alng the shre after a big strm had passed and fund the beach cvered with starfish as far as the eye culd see, stretching in bth directins.
starfish
Off in the distance, the ld man nticed a small by appraching. As the by walked, he paused every s ften and as he grew clser, the man culd see that he was ccasinally bending dwn t pick up an bject and thrw it int the sea. The by came clser still and the man called ut, “Gd mrning! May I ask what it is that yu are ding?”
The yung by paused, lked up, and replied “Thrwing starfish int the cean. The tide has washed them up nt the beach and they can’t return t the sea by themselves,” the yuth replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I thrw them back int the water.”
The ld man replied, “But there must be tens f thusands f starfish n this beach. I’m afraid yu wn’t really be able t make much f a difference.”
The by bent dwn, picked up yet anther starfish and threw it as far as he culd int the cean. Then he turned, smiled and said, “It made a difference t that ne!”
We all have the pprtunity t help create psitive change, but if yu’re like me, yu smetimes find yurself thinking, “I’m already really busy, and hw much f a difference can I really make?” I think this is especially true when we’re talking abut addressing massive scial prblems like tackling wrld hunger r finding a cure fr cancer, but it pps up all f the time in ur everyday lives, as well. S when I catch myself thinking that way, it helps t remember this stry. Yu might nt be able t change the entire wrld, but at least yu can change a small part f it, fr smene.
They say that ne f the mst cmmn reasns we prcrastinate (拖延) is because we see the challenge befre us as t big r difficult t deal with, and that a gd way t cunter that is t break the big challenge dwn int smaller pieces and then take thse ne at a time—like ne starfish at a time. And t that ne starfish, it can make a wrld f difference.
34. What did the ld man find n the beach early ne mrning?
