(新题材)German Subway Statin Catches Everyne’s Attentin
If yu have the chance t travel t Frankfurt, it’s wrth making a stp at the Bckenheimer Warte subway statin just t see its unique entryway. 21 has a vivid imaginatin might be cnvinced f the existence f pwerful supervillains (超级反派). The Art f Persuasin
Persuasin is the art f influencing thers’ thughts, feelings and actins. It’s abut 31 peple t see things frm yur perspective, adpt yur ideas r take specific actins. When yu’re negtiating a business deal, 32 a cause r simply trying t get yur pint acrss, persuasin plays a crucial rle.
Emplyers place a great value n emplyees with persuasin skills because they can impact several aspects f jb perfrmance. Besides, teamwrk and leadership rely heavily n the pwer f persuasin t get things dne. Withut persuasin skills, emplyees may nt be as 33 t r cnvinced f the imprtance f an rganizatin’s visin and lng-term missin. Effective use f persuasin skills will nt nly help get yur cwrkers excited abut yur ideas, it’ll als help yu 34 them t achieve a cmmn gal.
In rder t learn the art f persuasin at the wrkplace, yu need t understand hw t 35 cnflicts and reach agreements. Gd cmmunicatin is the first step in effective persuasin, but 36 and reasning are just as imprtant. Befre yu can get smebdy n-bard with yur gal, yu shuld help them understand why they shuld pursue it. Using 37 aids t back up yur ideas can help illustrate yur ideas better.
Successful persuasin skills are based n yur ability t have psitive interactins and maintain meaningful relatinships with peple. In rder t 38 thse relatinships, yu must be able t wrk in their best interests as well. Yur cwrkers are mre likely t agree with yu when they succeed 39 . The mre they achieve and the greater prgress they make, the mre they trust yur judgement and strength.
We persuade and get persuaded every day. A vast majrity f peple favur cperatin and teamwrk ver traditinal 40 structures; n ne likes t be tld what t d r t be pushed arund. Therefre, rganizatins and leaders shuld adpt pwerful persuasin skills t bring abut necessary changes.

Cmpliments are n straightfrward matter and require skills and knwledge. Dne well, wrds f praise can be 41 fr human relatins at hme and at wrk. But dne prly, cmpliments can be ineffective, even destructive. What fllws is a research-based guide t tell yu what kind f cmpliments are 42 .
Whether the cmpliment is effective in 43 the ther persn depends n whether it is believable, apprpriate, and unqualified. T begin with, a gd cmpliment must nt 44 with its recipient’s self-image. If yu tell me my hair lks gd, I will dismiss it and suspect yur 45 , because I have n hair n the head. Mre generally, peple with lw self-esteem dn’t usually receive cmpliments well, prbably because the cmpliment des nt ring true with their negative view f themselves, and s they 46 it.
Even if a cmpliment agrees with ne’s self-image, schlars writing in 2022 in Current Psychlgy cncluded, it must meet three criteria t be accepted by its 47 . The praise must cme frm a persn with credibility t give it, it must be sincere and unplanned, and it must ccur in the apprpriate 48 .
Cnsider, fr example, hw yu’d respnd t an excessive cmpliment frm a salespersn yu’d never met abut hw smart yu are when yu’re 49 a particular purchase. Yu’d prbably find that kind f cmpliment annying, because the persn desn’t knw yu well enugh t judge yur true 50 and is simply praising yu t make a sale.
The cmpliment fails n all three cunts: the praiser lacks credibility, their sincerity is suspect, and yur willingness t spend mney in a stre is nt a meaningful cntext fr 51 yur intelligence.
Sme cmpliments are nt just ineffective; they actually cause harm. My Harvard clleagues have cnducted research int backhanded praise, which puts smene dwn by cmparing their gd quality with a negative 52 . An example f a destructive cmpliment wuld be “Yu lk pretty gd fr a guy with n hair n the head” — nt that I’m insecure r anything — because this sets such a lw 53 n the praise.
Other ways t give negative praise include cmparisns with past 54 (“This draft is certainly better than the last ne”), with pr expectatins (“Yur wrk is better than I expected”), and with a cnventinal cnceptin (“This wrk isn’t bad fr a Yale graduate”).
In their experiments, the authrs fund that the cmplimenters thught these backhanded cmparisns were 55 , but bth recipients and third-party bservers disagreed.

Less is Mre is a bk with an ambitius subtitle: Hw Degrwth Will Save the Wrld. That’s a big claim, but this is by Jasn Hickel, ne f the leading advcates f pstgrwth thinking. He has a better chance than mst at backing that up.
Degrwth is ften used as a cntrversial wrd, but here it is used in a mre encuraging way. Hickel lks back t trace the rigins f ‘grwthism’, digging back thrugh climate change t fssil fuels (化石燃料), t ecnmic grwth and t capitalism. Capitalism “has a kind f ttalitarian lgic t it: every industry, every natinal ecnmy must grw, all the time, with n identifiable end-pint.” A central principle f capitalism is t take mre than yu give. Histrically, that prcess has driven kingdms and clnialism (殖民主义), and tday it drives climate change and eclgical breakdwn. Wealthier cuntries take frm the glbal atmsphere in yet anther frm f clnialism.
One f the mst damaging things abut capitalism is that it is “fundamentally ill frm any cncept f human need.” It piles its rewards nt the wealthiest first. The mre severe the pverty, the mre invisible it is t capital, and it takes n accunt f what it destrys in the prcess f turning things int mney.
Instead, we shuld find ways t priritise what matters mst. Mre, in already wealthy cuntries, is nt smething that matters. Hickel calculates that with better distributin and investment in public gds, the US ecnmy culd be 65% smaller with n lss in wellbeing. Gd lives are grunded in cmmunity, meaningful wrk, in scieties that cperate rather than cmpete. Peple and planet are being pushed t breaking pint t n gd end, says Hickel.
As the bk mves int its slutins, a series f antidtes (解药) t grwth are revealed. Justice is ne f them. Abundance (富足) is anther—grwth actually relies n peple being unsatisfied. These srts f ideas hint at much mre interesting pssibilities fr a pst-capitalist future.
“Fr 500 years,” Hickel writes, “capitalist grwth has been a prcess f enclsure and dispssessin. Degrwth represents a reversal f this prcess. It represents release. It represents an pprtunity fr recvery and repair.”
This is an elegant evlutin f degrwth ideas, expanding what the term can mean. Degrwth begins as a prcess f taking less. But in the end it pens up a whle landscape f pssibility, mving us frm pverty t abundance, frm dminance t reciprcity, and frm lneliness and separatin t cnnectin with a wrld that’s full f life.
Hard t argue with that. Perhaps degrwth will save the wrld.
63.Accrding t Hickel, it is _____ that causes eclgical breakdwn.
A.capitalism’s unceasing drive fr grwth
B.a lack f technlgical advancement
C.insufficient gvernmental regulatin
D.verinvestment in public gds
64.It can be inferred frm the passage that Hickel hlds that _____.
A.capitalism t sme extent meets the human need
B.clnialism is hard t avid even in mdern times
C.capitalist grwth has increasingly priritised recvery and repair
D.less wealthy cuntries need better distributin than wealthy nes
65.What des the wrd “reciprcity” (paragraph 7) mst prbably mean?
A.An unequal sharing f varius resurces.
B.A relatinship based n cntinuus giving.
C.The pssibility t cmpete fairly and freely.
D.The exchange f rights and mutual supprt.
66.Accrding t the passage, what des “degrwth” refer t?
A.Intensifying capitalist grwth in an ec-friendly way.
B.The priritising f individual grwth ver cmmunity welfare.
C.Bsting ecnmic develpment in rder t reach a state f abundance.
D.The reductin f ecnmic grwth t fcus n sustainability and well-being.
Sectin C
Directins: Cmplete the fllwing passage by using the sentences in the bx Each sentence can nly be used nce. Nte that there are tw sentences mre than yu need.
On-the-g Americans are increasingly cnsuming their mrning calries ver several hurs instead f sitting dwn t enjy a plate f pancakes, bacn and eggs in ne sitting. The case f the mrning chewing is being initiated by the belief that it’s healthier t eat several smaller meals instead f three squares a day.
What qualifies as a snack r a meal is still a matter f perspective. 67 General Mills, Quaker Oats and ther brands are adding t their lineup f small-packaged bars and ygurts. And Jimmy Dean this summer intrduced mini-breakfast sandwiches.
It’s breakfast in stages. Peple will eat smething at hme, then stp at a cnvenience stre fr cffee and maybe a little smething. 68 The number f times Americans snack is rising faster in the mrning than during the afternn r evening. After all, it’s easier and less time- cnsuming t pp a few snacks in yur backpack fr later enjyment than t sit dwn fr a prepared meal.
Turning the snacking habit int an all-day affair wuld be a majr grwth driver fr the already massive snack fd industry. Sales f all snack fds reached S16. 64 billin in the past year, up 3. 3 percent frm a year befre, accrding t Nielsen. Of curse, fd cmpanies have tried befre t get peple t eat utside f typical meal times. 69 Peple generally feel they shuld eat healthy in the mrnings t start the day ff right. Unfrtunately, snacking is generally assciated with junk fd.
Therefre, fd cmpanies are trying every means t make the idea f tearing int a snack befre nn easier t swallw. 70 Prducts that are less than 300 calries and have mre fiber r whle grains are quickly launched n the market. The idea is that such snacks will help peple stay energized r feel full lnger, making mrning snacking a psychlgically acceptable act.
A.Sustaining energy while n the mve all day withut sacrificing flavr is the verall rule.
B.Nutritinal benefits f packaged gdies are repeatedly mentined.
C.There is a cmmnly held idea that mre frequent meals can help influence weight lss.
D.But fd cmpanies are already rlling ut smaller bites that feed the grwing appetite fr mrning treats.
E.Marketing mrning snacks is trickier, thugh.
F.The decnstructin f breakfast is definitely happening.

Hw t imprve clinical trials?
Last year, a Swiss medicine cmpany published a review f the clinical trials n drugs it had held between 2016 and 2021. It fund that black peple were under-represented in all but ne. Surprisingly, that news represents prgress, because it shws that peple are becming mre aware f a dangerus bias (偏见) that sets back the safety f medical treatments.
Many trials leave ut certain grups — children, fr example, r peple with physical r learning disabilities, pregnant wmen and the elderly. There are gd explanatins fr the exclusin, such as the difficulty f getting infrmed permissin r the ptential harm t unbrn children. Yet the cnsequences can be serius. A recent review fund that half f trials arund the wrld testing hip-fracture (髋骨骨折) interventins excluded peple wh lived in nursing hmes, were ld r had sme srt f understanding prblems. Thugh these grups make up almst a third f all patients suffering hip fractures, it is unclear if the interventins will wrk as safely r as effectively n them. Their dctrs face a tugh chice: tell their patients t take the medicine anyway, with uncertain results; r deny them new treatments.
Obtaining infrmed permissin fr trials is nt always easy, especially frm peple with learning disabilities. Accunting fr different grups’ risks f side-effects can cmplicate the analysis f the data. Even s, bradening the range f trials’ participants can be practically useful, because it might lead t imprtant new findings in medicine.
Frtunately, the bias f clinical testing may be changing. The US gvernment has recently prpsed t reduce barriers and appeal t a wider range f participants by reducing the csts and cmmitments required fr patients t participate. Cuntries like America and Britain are discussing publishing regulatins that require trial rganisers t explain whm they ught t include and hw they plan t include them. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
