Jhn Griffith Chaney, better knwn as Jack Lndn, was ne f the mst ppular American authrs f his time. Brn n January 12th, 1876, in San Francisc, Califrnia, Lndn grew up in the wrking class. He had delivered newspapers, shveled cal, wrked n a ship, and fund emplyment in a cannery. In his free time, he preferred t stay at libraries, reading nvels and travel bks.
At the age f 17, Lndn experienced a painful vyage, ne in which a typhn had nearly taken ut Lndn and his crew. The adventurer made it hme and tld his mther what had happened t him. When his mther saw an annuncement in ne f the lcal papers fr a writing cntest, she pushed her sn t write dwn and submit his stry. Thugh armed with just an eighth-grade educatin, Lndn wn first prize and gt $25.
Fr Lndn, the cntest was an eye-pening experience and he decided t devte his life t writing shrt stries. But he had truble finding willing publishers. After trying t make a living n the East Cast, he returned t Califrnia and briefly enrlled at the University f Califrnia at Berkeley, befre heading nrth t Canada t seek at least a small frtune in the gld rush happening in the Yukn. By 22, hwever, Lndn still hadn’t put tgether much f a living. But this time, he believed that he culd make a living as a writer because he felt that he had s many stries t tell. Then in 1899,he began publishing stries in the Overland Mnthly.
At the age f 27, Lndn finally fund fame. With his nvel The Call f the Wild making a great success, he carried n his hard-driving writing style. Later n, he published ver 50 bks ver the last 16 years f his life. Unfrtunately, fr much f the last decade f his life, Lndn faced many health issues. These included kidney disease, which tk his life n Nvember 22nd, 1916.

The gats grazed (吃草) between a neighbrhd and the Eldrad K-8 Schl near the crssrads f Munt Spris Parkway and Indiana Street. Just up the rad marks the area f the Marshall Fire, Clrad’s mst cstly wildfire that caused huge damage in Superir and Luisville in December 2021. Investigatrs said the disastrus fire began with burning pieces and bits frm a brken pwer line. The fires were driven by high winds and dried grass and brush.
After the Marshall Fire, cities and twns in Clrad tk a greater interest in managing their vegetatin, said Leslie Clark, Superir’s parks, recreatin and pen space directr. “Our pen space, traditinally, was managed pretty hands-ff as far as vegetatin, whereas nw we’re taking a mre active apprach t reduce fire risks,” Clark said. “Gat grazing really... helps us reduce bth current grwth and the ld, dried-up dead vegetatin. They lve t eat the weeds (野草), and weed reductin is a big part f ur wildfire mitigatin (减轻).”
Using gats fr wildfire mitigatin isn’t new, but it has grwn in ppularity in the past decade and really picked up after the Marshall Fire, said Dnny Benz, wh runs the gat grazing business Gat Green LLC with his mther, Lani Malmberg. Gat Green LLC has abut 1,500 gats that are sent arund the state t eat. Malmberg started the business, primarily fcused n weed - eating, in 1996. Nw, Malmberg and Benz ffer their gats t private landwners, hmewners’ assciatins, Air Frce bases, the Bureau f Land Management and a number f cities acrss the West.
An imprtant part f fire mitigatin is clearing away lw-grwing vegetatin like grasses and lw-lying tree branches t prevent fires frm climbing t taller vegetatin like trees. Gats are unique in addressing this issue, Malmberg said.
