T cmmunicate withut wrds, humans use a hst f gestures — whether a wave t wish smene gdbye r a thumbs-up t indicate apprval. Nw researchers have fund, in a particularly plite example, the first dcumented evidence f a symblic gesture used by birds.
Sme birds seem t flutter (拍翅膀) their wings t tell their mates they shuld enter the nest first, suggesting that the animals may cmmunicate with a variety f gestures.
Tshitaka Suzuki at the University f Tky and his clleagues set up hundreds f nest bxes in a frest ppulated with Japanese tits (山雀) near the twn f Karuizawa. Each bx had a 7.5-centimeter-wide hle, just big enugh fr ne bird t squeeze thrugh at a time. During breeding seasn, the team bserved 321 nest visits acrss eight breeding pairs, with the tits ften bringing fd fr their baby birds. If a bird cuple arrived at the nest tgether, each tit wuld land n a nearby branch befre entering. Abut 40 percent f the time, the female fluttered her wings fr a few secnds, with her chest facing the male. This was quickly fllwed by the male entering the nest first, then the female. When neither bird fluttered its wings, which made up 44 percent f nest visitatins, the females usually entered first. Only ne male was seen repeatedly fluttering its wings, which was fllwed by the female entering first. Wing fluttering wasn’t bserved at all when each bird arrived separately.
The team believes that this discvery cnflicts with earlier beliefs that nly a few species use gestures t cmmunicate. “They’ve dne a really gd jb here f shwing there is an assciatin between this mvement, this gesture, and then... the ther bird ding smething,” says Mike Webster, an rnithlgist at Crnell University, wh was nt invlved in the research.
“It’s really strng supprt t the ntin that it’s a symblic gesture. The bird that’s the receiver knws what it means, and it des what it’s suppsed t d.”
“We can cnclude that this wing fluttering cnveys ‘after yu’,” says Suzuki. “This study is the first t shw us clearly by evidence that birds can use wing mvements t cnvey a particular meaning.”
8. What is the aim f Tshitaka Suzuki’s experiment?
A. T find hw the birds’ wings wrk in the wind.
B. T bserve whether birds treat their mates plitely.
C. T prve whether birds can cmmunicate with each ther.
D. T research whether birds can use symblic gestures.
9. Accrding t paragraph 2, why d tits flutter their wings?
A. T shw directin t the ther bird.
B. T signal their mates t enter the nest.
C. T dry ff their wings after flying in the rain.
D. T scare away ptential predatrs near the nest.
10. Hw d the researchers cnduct the study n Japanese tits?
A. By listing sme examples. B. By bserving and cmparing.
C. By reviewing previus data.D. By analyzing cause and effect.
