The Cnstitutinal Curt(宪法法院)f Ecuadr has ruled that sea ecsystems n the cuntry's cast have legal rights. An ecsystem is a grup f plants and animals that affect ne anther. The ruling is expected t lead t strnger prtectins against activities that harm underwater habitats.
Ecuadr is near the Pacific Ocean in western Suth America. The water ff its cast is a habitat fr sharks, whales, and dlphins. The Galápags Islands, a grup f islands with many species that are fund nwhere else n Earth, are als part f Ecuadr.
In 2008, Ecuadr became the first cuntry t say clearly in its cnstitutin that nature has legal rights. Since then, ther cuntries such as Blivia and New Zealand have als passed laws ffering legal rights t nature. Ecuadr's Cnstitutinal Curt has made rulings befre t prtect natural envirnments — fr example, it stps mining in a frest where many endangered species live.
The latest ruling was triggered by a 2020 lawsuit(起诉)frm fishers wh hped t end a limit n industrial fishing in castal waters within 9 miles. The curt ruled against the fishers, saying that this prtected area has helped increase fish ppulatins and is necessary fr the health f the habitat.
Explaining that ceans and seas are imprtant fr "the healthy functining f the planet", the curt stated that sea ecsystems have a legal right t preserve their natural "life cycles, structure and functins". This includes having stable(稳定的)animal ppulatins, water temperatures, and salt levels.
