Once I gt t seventh grade and went t middle schl,ur entire student bdy was assigned t either the Red r the White team.Thrughut the year,we cmpeted against each ther in varius games and exercises fr pints.I eventually became president f The Cmmittee f Games, speeding up my cmpetitive fever.I als played n the field hckey team and the basketball team. And at hme, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply nrmal things we did.As I attended cllege,my rmmate and I even tk up the habit f cmpleting Ryal Canadian Air Frce (RCAF) exercises every day,a practice that cntinued int my marriage, when we had n spare mney t use t jin a gym.
S,thugh,it shcks sme f ur friends, that early fundatin (基础) develped in adulthd int a sprts and fitness fcus, cnsidered necessary even n vacatin.I still lve reading and the arts,t.As far as I'm cncerned, life is the richest with my feet in bth wrlds.

Surrunded by twering redwds n ne side and the Pacific Ocean n the ther, the castal city f Santa Cruz, sme 70 miles suth f San Francisc,is a great place fr a yung persn t experience nature. That's where Xinning Zhang, assistant prfessr f gesciences and the Princetn Envirnmental Institute, spent her childhd."Grwing up there,yu just can't help thinking and caring abut the envirnment,"she said. One f the envirnmental questins Zhang is explring is why methane,a significant greenhuse gas,is increasing in the atmsphere.
Mst f us are aware that cws release methane, but wetlands are als a majr surce f the gas.Wetlands hst a cmmunity f micrbes(微生物),including Archaea, which generate methane as a byprduct when they cnsume and digest cmpnents f rganic matter. These micrbes grw in xygen-free envirnments like wet sils, which typically ccur in the wetlands' deeper levels.Hwever, researchers have been surprised t find that quite a lt f methane cmes frm the xygen-rich peat(泥炭) and sil near the surface.
T explre this phenmenn,Zhang and her team analyzed peat samples cllected frm a wetland in the Nrtheast set f samples received xygen treatment fllwed by incubatin(培养)under xygen-free cnditins. The ther samples remained in an xygen-free envirnment fr the entire study perid.Cntrary t expectatins, the xygen-treated peats prduced a higher amunt f methane than the peats maintained under cntinuusly xygen-free cnditins.
T find ut why,the researchers analyzed all the micrbes fund in the peat samples. They fund that xygen stimulated sme micrbes t break dwn harmful chemicals, which wuld therwise threaten the entire micrbial cmmunity, including methane-prducing Archaea. The result is the creatin f far mre methane than expected.
Zhang's wrk suggests that xygen variability is an imprtant cntrl n wetland methane prductin. Her team is als explring further hw xygen variability fr different lengths f time, and hw different sil chemistries influence micrbial methane prductin.
8.What mtivated Zhang t study envirnmental issues? ______
A. Her childhd experiences.B. The adventure in nature.
C. Her educatinal backgrund.D. The pressure frm fellws.
9.Why did Zhang analyze micrbes in the wetland sil? ______
A. T examine the cnditin f surface sil.
B. T explre the impact f methane n micrbes.
C. T study the rle f xygen in methane prductin.
D. T calculate the amunt f methane released by cws.
10.Hw might the findings help reduce methane frm wetlands? ______
A. By changing sil structures.B. By intrducing new micrbes.
C. By blcking harmful chemicals.D. By adjusting sil xygen levels.
11.Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text? ______
A. Hw Des Methane Affect Climate Change?
B. What Drives Methane Prductin in Wetlands?
C. What Is the Link Between Oxygen and Methane?
D. Hw D Wetlands Cntribute t Micrbial Diversity?
D
The cnnectin between peple and plants has lng been the subject f scientific research. Recent studies have fund psitive effects. A study cnducted in Yungstwn, Ohi, fr example, discvered that greener areas f the city experienced less crime. In anther, emplyees were shwn t be 15% mre prductive when their wrkplaces were decrated with huseplants.
The engineers at the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT) have taken it a step further—changing the actual cmpsitin f plants in rder t get them t perfrm diverse, even unusual functins. These include plants that have sensrs printed nt their leaves t shw when they're shrt f water and a plant that can detect harmful chemicals in grundwater. "We're thinking abut hw we can engineer plants t replace functins f the things that we use every day," explained Michael Stran, a prfessr f chemical engineering at MIT.
One f his latest prjects has been t make plants glw (发光) in experiments using sme cmmn vegetables. Stran's team fund that they culd create a faint light fr three-and-a-half hurs. The light, abut ne-thusandth f the amunt needed t read by, is just a start. The technlgy, Stran said, culd ne day be used t light the rms r even t turn trees int self-pwered street lamps.
In the future, the team hpes t develp a versin f the technlgy that can be sprayed nt plant leaves in a n-ff treatment that wuld last the plant's lifetime. The engineers are als trying t develp an n and ff "switch" where the glw wuld fade when expsed t daylight.
Lighting accunts fr abut 7% f the ttal electricity cnsumed in the US. Since lighting is ften far remved frm the pwer surce—such as the distance frm a pwer plant t street lamps n a remte highway—a lt f energy is lst during transmissin (传输). Glwing plants culd reduce this distance and therefre help save energy.
12.What is the first paragraph mainly abut?
A. A new study f different plants.
B. A big fall in crime rates.
C. Emplyees frm varius wrkplaces.
D. Benefits frm green plants.
13.What is the functin f the sensrs printed n plant leaves by MIT engineers?
A. T detect plants' lack f water.B. T change cmpsitins f plants.
C. T make the life f plants lnger.D. T test chemicals in plants.
14.What can we expect f the glwing plants in the future?
A. They will speed up energy prductin.
B. They may transmit electricity t the hme.
C. They might help reduce energy cnsumptin.
D. They culd take the place f pwer plants.
15.Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
A. Can we grw mre glwing plants?
B. Hw d we live with glwing plants?
C. Culd glwing plants replace lamps?
D. Hw are glwing plants made pllutin-free?
