Every year a cmmunity in sme part f the wrld is destryed by flding. Indeed, flding can happen anywhere it rains. There is hpe, hwever. Architects and civil engineers have develped prmising technlgies fr fld cntrl. And yes, engineering can be beautiful.
The Thames Barrier in England
The Thames Barrier is the secnd largest fld defence barrier in the wrld. Made f steel, water gates n the Thames Barrier are nrmally left pen s ships can pass thrugh. Then, as needed, the water gates shut t stp water flwing thrugh and t keep the Thames River safe. The Thames Barrier has 10 steel gates. The main gates stand as high as a 5-strey building. Each main gate weighs 3,300 tnnes. The Thames Barrier gates were cnstructed between 1974 and 1984 and have been clsed t prevent flds mre than 100 times.
Red Sluice Gate in Japan
T prtect areas n the cast and alng Japan’s rapidly-flwing rivers, the natin’s engineers have develped a cmplex system f canals and fld-gate lcks(水闸). Red Sluice Gate was designed in 1924 by a Japanese architect wh als wrked n the Panama Canal. It is pwered by autmated "water-drive" mtrs. Such mtrs dn’t need electricity t run, s they aren’t affected by pwer failures that can ccur during strms. It cntributed greatly t preventing flds until 1982 when a new sluice gate was cmpleted. The Red Sluice Gate was n lnger used but remains an impressive sight.
The Hagestein Weir in the Netherlands
Cmpleted in abut 1960, the Hagestein Weir is ne f three mvable dams, alng the Rhine River in the Netherlands. The Hagestein Weir has tw enrmus arched gates t cntrl water and generate pwer. Spanning 54 meters, the gates are stred in the up psitin. Dams and water barriers like Hagestein Weir have becme mdels fr water cntrl engineers arund the wrld.

Having wrked in the AI field fr ver a decade, Zhang Qiang never imagined his expertise wuld intersect with jiandu — China’s 3,000-year-ld bamb and wden slips — until he and his team develped DeepJiandu, the wrld’s first large-scale dataset dedicated t character recgnitin fr these cultural relics. Regarded as China’s earliest frm f bks, jiandu served as a bridge in the evlutin f Chinese writing — frm racle bne (甲骨文) and brnze inscriptins t later paper dcuments.
Unlike existing tls designed t detect readable characters n ancient paper dcuments, DeepJiandu was created specifically t tackle the challenges f deciphering (辨认) jiandu characters under cmplex cnditins, such as characters f varying sizes frm different dynasties, cnnected strkes in ancient handwriting, and characters damaged r faded by natural elements — issues deemed the “mst cmmn yet unavidable” in jiandu preservatin.
T aid researchers in studying jiandu, the DeepJiandu dataset ffers 7,416 infrared (红外线的) images generated frm scans f ver 40,000 physical jiandu samples. The team analyzed individual samples t prduce nearly 100,000 anntatins (评注). Thugh seemingly minr, these anntatins “significantly clarify character meanings,” enabling even nvices t interpret jiandu cntents.
The team’s visin f an pen-surce “lexicn” fr jiandu predates the dataset itself. In June 2024, they launched an even mre cmprehensive data-sharing platfrm dedicated t jiandu relics, supprted by Nrthwest Nrmal University.
Museums are leveraging technlgy t enhance visitr engagement. Fr instance, the Changsha Jiandu Museum in Hunan — hme t ver 100,000 Wu Kingdm jiandu pieces — uses AR-enabled picture bks with QR cdes t illustrate histrical narratives. Similarly, the Gansu Jiandu Museum emplys AI-guided rbts named “Jian” and “Du” t interact with visitrs. As museum directr Zhu Jianjun ntes, these digital innvatins exemplify China’s integratin f technlgy and cultural preservatin, bridging ancient texts with mdern tls t make jiandu accessible t all.

A heritage language is a language that isn’t the “mst pwerful” language f an area, but is still learned by children in their hmes (thus, it’s their heritage). Any language can be a heritage language, depending n the surrunding scial cntext. English, fr example, is ften a primary language, but culd technically be a heritage language if smene’s English-speaking parents mved frm, say, the United Kingdm t Japan
Heritage languages can be smene’s native language, but the tw terms aren’t interchangeable. A native language is the language r languages a persn learns when they’re very yung while heritage languages can be determined by a brad range f scial and cultural factrs. Usually, peple speak their native language very well. Smene’s abilities in their heritage language can vary quite a bit, hwever. Sme peple may master it well because they learned it a lt when they were children, while thers may speak it but nt read it, and still thers may struggle with speaking it at all.
The United States has ver 56 millin Spanish speakers, and a large part f thse are heritage learners f the language. A research fund that the percentage f peple wh reprt speaking Spanish “well” drps frm 91 t 82 fr first-and secnd-generatin immigrants (移民). While that might seem small, it gets much mre bvius after that, with third-and furth-generatin immigrants drpping t 47 percent.
There are a cuple f reasns why heritage languages — and Spanish in particular — tends t drp ff frm generatin t generatin. The first ne is that the heritage language is less imprtant t get arund in sciety. When a persn needs the majrity language t g t schl, get a jb and interact with mst peple arund them, it’s nt surprising that the heritage language might seem less imprtant. Anther reasn is sme parents encurage their children nt t use their heritage language. It’s unfrtunate but true that speaking anther language is still a cause fr discriminatin (歧视) tday.
Heritage languages may have a hard time lasting frm generatin t generatin, but it’s nt nly a stry f decline (衰弱). There are cuntless peple in the wrld wh g ut f their way t learn their heritage languages — sme learn the heritage language later in life — and help thers t d the same. If yu’ve ever thught abut recnnecting with a heritage language, it’s never t late t get started. There’s n time like the present.

30.What is ne reasn fr the drp f Heritage languages in the US?
A.Appearance discriminatinB.Generatin gap.
